Chapter 19:

Chapter 19:

Heartless?

Jiang Feng turned his head and glanced at Xu Qingya, his expression indifferent. He stood by the door, backlit by the sunlight streaming in, casting a soft glow around him. His sharp features appeared almost ethereal, calm yet imposing, like a figure from a distant realm.

“I’m cruel? Really?” he scoffed.

“If you’re not cruel, then why haven’t you come to see me these days?” Xu Qingya’s heart raced, and a surge of bitterness rose within her. “I’m just mad at you! You’re out here cozying up to other women instead of caring about me. How could you be so heartless? How can this be happening?!”

Standing beside them, Lin Yiyi was stunned.

Cozying up to another woman?

Was Xu Qingya referring to her?

“No, no! Xiao Feng and I are just classmates. Please don’t spread rumors!” Lin Yiyi protested, both embarrassed and annoyed. “There’s nothing between us!”

“Nothing?” Xu Qingya laughed bitterly. “Then why were you practically draping yourself over him and inviting him to the cafeteria? Who do you think you’re fooling?”

“You!” Lin Yiyi was furious. “You and Jiang Feng already broke up. How can he still be your boyfriend?”

At the mention of their breakup, Xu Qingya lifted her head with pride, like a haughty swan. “We just had a little fight, not a breakup! Xiao Feng and I grew up together. A woman like you can’t come between us!”

Jiang Feng remained silent, almost in awe of her confidence.

“As soon as I say we’re back together, Xiao Feng will agree,” Xu Qingya added smugly, turning to Jiang Feng. “Isn’t that right, Xiao Feng?”

All eyes turned to Jiang Feng, and whispers broke out among the students.

“Tsk, tsk. Jiang Feng used to be such a pushover. There’s no way he won’t get back together with her.”

“If I were Jiang Feng, I wouldn’t cave in. Stand your ground, man! But still, he does seem like the type to go back to her.”

“Please, if you had someone like Xu Qingya chasing after you, you’d be begging to get back with her.”

Xu Qingya, confident in her assumption, smiled. “Jiang Feng, if you apologize to me and promise to stay away from other women, and also apologize to Uncle Jiang and He Minglang, I’ll forgive you. I’ll even overlook your indiscretions this time!”

She offered him an easy way out, convinced he wouldn’t dare break up with her for real.

“We’ve already broken up,” Jiang Feng said firmly, frowning. “Xu Qingya, who I choose to eat with is none of your business. We broke up because I didn’t like you anymore. I couldn’t stand your spoiled, princess-like attitude. Do you understand?”

His tone was calm, and his words cut through the air like a cold breeze.

“You don’t like me? Impossible! You used to dote on me, obeying my every word! You didn’t like me? Why were you always jealous of He Minglang, then?” Xu Qingya’s face twisted in disbelief, her previously composed expression crumbling.

The people around them stared wide-eyed, surprised by what they were witnessing.

Jiang Feng, who had always been soft toward Xu Qingya, was standing his ground.

“Wow, Jiang Feng’s got guts now!”

“Did he really just reject the school’s most popular girl?”

Whispers turned into a commotion, but Jiang Feng remained unfazed.

“I did like you once,” he admitted. “From childhood, I tried my best to give you everything you wanted. But what did you do in return? You constantly threw tantrums, always threatening to leave me. I’m not interested in playing those games anymore. Listen carefully—I don’t like you now, and that has nothing to do with anyone else.”

Xu Qingya’s face turned pale with shock.

Without sparing her another glance, Jiang Feng left, his words still echoing in the air.

It didn’t take long for the news of Jiang Feng’s rejection of Xu Qingya to spread like wildfire throughout the school.

Jiang Feng went to the cafeteria and ate his meal in peace. Afterward, he checked his phone and saw that his WeChat inbox had exploded with messages.

[Xu Guang: Your translation is perfect! I added you because I want to invite you to be my private translator. We can discuss the rate.]

[Xu Guang: Are you there?]

[Xu Guang: I’ve attached some PDFs. They’re the documents I need translated. Take a look, and if you agree, I’ll negotiate a price for you by the thousand words.]

[Xu Guang: Did you see my messages?]

There were over a dozen more messages from Xu Guang.

Jiang Feng opened the PDFs. They were filled with dense, technical language from medical and criminal investigation texts—full of specialized terminology. Difficult for most, but for him, it was like second nature.

[Jiang Feng: I can do it.]

On the way home, He Minglang and Xu Qingya walked in silence, their minds occupied with different thoughts. Suddenly, they overheard a group of girls chatting excitedly nearby.

“Have you seen that family-reunion show?”

“What show?”

“The one on C City Satellite TV! It’s so touching, I cried my eyes out!”
