You Were Made to Be Cannon Fodder, but Ended Up a Winner in Life?

Chapter 4:

Chapter 4: Humble Love 4:

Chen Zhongguo couldn’t even remember the last time his son had brought gifts over.

But he did recall that before his son started dating Zhang Ya, he was very filial.

Despite the family’s comfortable financial situation, his son insisted on doing part-time work as soon as he entered college.

Most of the money he earned, after covering his living expenses, was spent on gifts for him and his wife.

Although these gifts weren’t expensive, he and his wife cherished every one of them.

But ever since their son began dating Zhang Ya, all of his money was spent on her.

He wasn’t angry—he simply felt it wasn’t worth it for his son.

But now, his son was actually bringing gifts again?

“Xiao Nuo, what are you holding?”

Suppressing the thoughts running through his mind, Chen Zhongguo asked, testing the waters.

“I bought some gifts for you and Mom. Let’s see if you like them.”

Chen Nuo noticed the surprise in his father’s eyes and, for some reason, felt a pang of guilt in his chest.

He knew it was the lingering emotions of guilt from the previous owner of his body.

“Here’s a pair of shoes and a watch for you, Dad. Let me know if they’re suitable.”

Chen Nuo spoke and pulled out two exquisite gift boxes from the bags.

One box contained a pair of leather shoes, while the other held a watch.

“Alright, I’ll try them.”

For some reason, Chen Zhongguo’s hands trembled slightly as he took the gifts.

He could tell that the shoes and watch were quite valuable.

Logically, his son shouldn’t have had the money to buy such things since it had all been spent on Zhang Ya.

But now…

A wild guess formed in Chen Zhongguo’s mind, one that made him both excited and hopeful.

“Xiao Nuo, you’re back?”

Just as Chen Zhongguo was about to try on the gifts, Chen’s mother walked out of the kitchen, having just finished cooking. When she saw Chen Nuo, her eyes softened with warmth.

“Mom.”

Chen Nuo greeted her without hesitation, thanks to the memories and emotions he had inherited.

“You must be hungry. Go wash your hands and get ready to eat.”

Chen’s mother looked behind Chen Nuo and, upon confirming that Zhang Ya wasn’t with him, her smile grew even warmer.

“Hold on a bit; our son brought us gifts. Come over and take a look.”

Chen Zhongguo beckoned his wife over.

“Gifts?”

Chen’s mother was taken aback.

“Our son bought me shoes and a watch, and he got something for you too.”

Chen Zhongguo explained.

“Yes, I got you a scarf and a dress, Mom.”

Suppressing the complex feelings of guilt left by the previous owner, Chen Nuo spoke.

“I don’t want them!!”

But Chen’s mother’s expression immediately turned serious.

“Xiao Nuo, the marital home will absolutely not be changed to solely Zhang Ya’s name. While I don’t approve of your relationship with her, I won’t force you to break up. You can even marry her, but changing the house’s ownership is out of the question.”

“There is no room for negotiation!!”

Her tone was firm and brooked no argument.

She assumed that the reason Chen Nuo had brought gifts was to sway them on the issue of the marital home’s ownership change.

Beside her, Chen Zhongguo was momentarily stunned before his brows furrowed.

“Xiao Nuo, did you bring these gifts because you want us to change the name on the marital home to Zhang Ya’s?”

“I agree with your mother—absolutely not! Don’t even think about it!!”

Seeing their parents’ sudden stern expressions, Chen Nuo felt another wave of guilt.

“Mom, Dad, you’re overthinking this. The gifts have nothing to do with the house. I just wanted to give you both something.”

Chen Nuo explained and, noticing their lingering guarded expressions, continued.

“I’ve already decided to break up with Zhang Ya.”

“What!?”

“Xiao Nuo, is that true? Are you really not joking with Mom?”

Hearing this, Chen Zhongguo, who had been seated on the sofa, sprang to his feet with barely contained excitement.

Beside him, Chen’s mother also grew visibly excited.

They both stared at Chen Nuo, their anticipation and hope practically tangible.

“It’s absolutely true.”

Chen Nuo nodded firmly.

Seeing this, both Chen Zhongguo and his wife clenched their hands tightly.

They knew their son well—he had never lied, not even once.

Even during the years he had been with Zhang Ya, he had never lied to them.

So, he was really going to break up!!

Excitement.

Utter joy.

The couple exchanged glances, their eyes reflecting their shared emotions.

“Xiao Nuo, let me ask you one more time—are you truly going to break up with that woman?”

After the initial excitement, Chen’s mother asked again, just to be sure.

It wasn’t that she doubted her son but that Zhang Ya had had such a firm grip on him.

Meanwhile, Chen Zhongguo also looked at Chen Nuo, awaiting his response.

“I’m absolutely sure. I’m breaking up and there will be no reconciliation.”

Chen Nuo nodded seriously, his resolute and firm demeanor erasing any doubt from their hearts.

“We’re not eating at home today—we’re going out to celebrate!”

Chen’s mother announced, and Chen Zhongguo quickly nodded in agreement.

“Yes, let’s go out for dinner. I’ll make a reservation right now.”

He pulled out his phone to call a restaurant.

The couple was overwhelmed with joy and excitement.

Although they didn’t know why their son had suddenly decided to break up, it didn’t matter.

Breaking up was all that mattered!!

They had to celebrate with a meal out!

“Mom, didn’t you already cook?”

Seeing his parents’ excitement, Chen Nuo couldn’t help but smile wryly.

“So what if I cooked? We’re going out for a good meal today. Listen to me! Husband, book a table at Yue Lai Restaurant right now. I’ll go change clothes and be right down.”

With that, Chen’s mother waved her hand dismissively and headed upstairs to change, her steps full of joy and enthusiasm.
