Chapter 3
Chapter 3: Humble Love 3:
(In a lavishly decorated villa)
“What did Xiao Nuo say on the phone? Is he going to spend more money on that woman again?”
Chen’s mother looked at Chen’s father, who had just put down the phone, with a mix of concern and worry.
As a university professor who had met countless people in her lifetime, Chen’s mother could clearly see that her son’s girlfriend, Zhang Ya, wasn’t a good person.
Both she and her husband had worked as university professors all their lives, handling research projects and earning substantial bonuses, making them quite wealthy.
She wasn’t afraid of Zhang Ya spending money, nor was she worried about Zhang Ya having schemes.
What concerned her was that Zhang Ya didn’t truly love her son and was just using him as a fool.
Over the years, she had become convinced that Zhang Ya was indeed using her son as a fool.
Yet her son seemed oblivious, believing wholeheartedly that Zhang Ya truly loved him.
This left Chen’s mother deeply troubled and regretful.
“Husband, do you think we sheltered our son too much when he was growing up?”
Chen’s mother sighed heavily.
She had often regretted protecting their son too much, leading him to be ensnared by a woman like Zhang Ya.
“Enough, don’t overthink it. He said he’s coming over for dinner alone.”
Chen Zhongguo held his wife’s hand, but his expression was a mix of curiosity and surprise.
“Coming for dinner alone? Without that woman, Zhang Ya?”
Chen’s mother was stunned, then incredulous.
“That’s what he said.”
Chen Zhongguo nodded. The couple exchanged surprised glances, unable to hide their disbelief.
This was rare.
Whenever Chen Nuo came over, he always brought Zhang Ya along.
Despite their repeated expressions of disapproval over Zhang Ya marrying into the family, their son had never taken it seriously.
Yet now, he was coming over alone.
“Husband, do you think our son suddenly saw the light and realized Zhang Ya is no good?”
Chen’s mother’s face lit up with excitement.
As a university professor, she was usually calm and composed, but when it came to Zhang Ya, she couldn’t help but express her true feelings.
It was evident just how strong her negative feelings toward Zhang Ya were.
“I don’t know, but I doubt it. Our son doesn’t see things that clearly. Sigh, we really did shelter him too much.”
Chen Zhongguo shook his head and sighed.
Chen’s mother’s initial excitement dimmed as she realized the truth in his words.
Yes, their son wouldn’t easily see through Zhang Ya’s true colors.
If he could, he wouldn’t have been so thoroughly ensnared for years.
“In a way, it’s our fault too. Xiao Nuo grew up watching us love each other, so he has an idealized view of love. But the world isn’t the same anymore.”
Chen Zhongguo’s brows furrowed.
He wasn’t angry at his son for failing to see Zhang Ya’s true nature because, at the heart of it, his son’s actions were driven by love.
The problem was that he had given his all for someone who treated him like a fool.
“Husband, do you think our son’s visit today is about that issue again?”
After a moment of silence, Chen’s mother suddenly grew anxious.
“What issue?”
Chen Zhongguo didn’t immediately understand.
“The matter of changing the name on the marital home!”
Chen’s mother gritted her teeth as she spoke.
This issue touched her bottom line.
As she had said before, she didn’t mind Zhang Ya having schemes—if their son liked her, spending a little money to support her was fine.
They weren’t short on money.
But adding her name to the property was absolutely out of the question!
They had bought Chen Nuo a new home, a four-bedroom, two-living-room apartment of 180 square meters in a prime location.
Given the current housing prices in the provincial capital, the home was worth millions.
Originally, if Chen Nuo found a wife they approved of, they would’ve considered adding her name to the property.
But Zhang Ya was absolutely not an option!
“I don’t think so. When our son called earlier to say he was coming alone for dinner, he sounded calm.”
Chen Zhongguo thought for a moment and shook his head.
Still, he couldn’t help but worry.
Not long ago, his son had mentioned that Zhang Ya wanted the marital home to be solely in her name.
They had firmly rejected the idea, and at the time, their son didn’t argue.
But Zhang Ya was cunning and had a tight grip on their son.
There was still a chance their son would bring it up again.
“Whether it’s about that or not, we absolutely cannot agree! Husband, you must stand with me on this.”
Chen’s mother insisted firmly.
“Of course.”
Chen Zhongguo nodded. The idea of the marital home being solely in Zhang Ya’s name crossed a line for him as well.
“I don’t know what’s so special about that woman…”
Chen’s mother sighed and dropped the topic. She got up from her seat.
“I’ll go make some of our son’s favorite dishes.”
“Go ahead.”
Chen Zhongguo waved her off and picked up his cup of tea.
But as he drank, the tea seemed tasteless.
In the past, he believed protecting their son was a good thing, as he had endured hardships himself and didn’t want his son to suffer.
But now, he realized it may have been the wrong approach.
…
After paying the taxi fare, Chen Nuo stepped out with the gifts he had bought for his parents.
Ten minutes later, he stood in front of the villa.
He took out the key, opened the door, and stepped inside.
“Dad, where’s Mom?”
Upon entering, he saw his father, Chen Zhongguo, sitting on the living room sofa, sipping tea.
“She’s in the kitchen making food for you, knowing you were coming.”
Hearing his son’s greeting and immediate inquiry about his mother’s whereabouts, Chen Zhongguo felt a mix of emotions.
After replying, he noticed the multiple gift bags in Chen Nuo’s hands and was momentarily stunned.
