Chapter 19 - Harmonious Family
“Where did this blood come from?” Yang Shifei wondered.
Did Xiang Tianlin cough up blood while practicing martial arts? Or…
Many murder cases flashed through his mind, making him feel a little cold.
But upon careful consideration, what murder case would occur in the Nine Layers Sect Master’s bedroom?
After pondering for a while, Yang Shifei couldn’t come up with an answer.
“Tan Xiang, how about your side?”
“There are many books piled up, but I haven’t finished looking through them.” Tan Xiang was quickly searching through the bookshelf. “I haven’t found any traps or suspicious letters yet.”
Traps?
Yang Shifei pondered.
Yes, if someone wanted to do something secretive, setting up traps and secret chambers would indeed be the most secure method.
If someone truly coveted the Sacred Martial Stone or even plotted rebellion, why would they leave evidence lying around on the table? They would surely keep it under tight guard.
And perhaps these bloodstains on the floor were related to that?
Yang Shifei quickly swept aside the bedding on the bed and tapped around the bedside.
Crack!
The eerie sound from under the bed startled both Yang Shifei and Tan Xiang.
There really was a mechanism!
They heard the sound of stone bricks shifting, and the dressing table moved to the side on its own. The wall behind it slightly recessed and slowly opened.
“There’s indeed a secret chamber.”
Tan Xiang furrowed her eyebrows slightly and pulled Yang Shifei, who was about to step forward. “Be careful; there might be traps inside.”
“I understand.”
Yang Shifei took out several stones from his pocket and tossed them into the dim and dark secret chamber.
But when they heard the echoes, both of them were surprised.
The stones easily hit the bottom, indicating that the secret chamber was quite small, only enough for about ten people.
“I thought it might connect to some secret underground passages, but I didn’t expect it to be just a small room?”
Yang Shifei cautiously peered into the secret chamber and took the candle lit by Tan Xiang to illuminate the interior.
He quickly realized that there was nothing as mysterious as he had imagined. The cramped space only contained a long black box, which looked like…
“A coffin?”
Yang Shifei’s expression changed slightly.
What’s wrong with Xiang Tianlin, stuffing a coffin in his own bedroom secret chamber?!
But he gradually felt a chill in the air, not just psychological, but a real drop in temperature.
“The material used for this coffin is extraordinary,” Tan Xiang said as she stepped into the secret chamber, reaching out to touch the coffin and pondering, “It should be Celestial Mountain wood from Spirit City, extremely rare. It has the effect of preserving cold energy, and when combined with the cold attribute of White Pond Jade, it can make a good coffin that can keep the body from decay for a long time.”
She then reached under the coffin, feeling the temperature, and nodded shortly after, “Yes, this unusual coldness is indeed from the White Pond Jade.”
“Is there such a magical treasure in this world?” Yang Shifei asked in surprise.
Tan Xiang just glanced at him. “Even the Sacred Martial Stone exists in this world, so compared to that, Celestial Mountain wood and White Pond Jade are just ordinary items.”
Yang Shifei was even more astonished.
He was curious about how mysterious the Sacred Martial Stone really was. Could it control the winds and rain?
“But it’s strange, why would Xiang Tianlin go to such lengths to prepare this?” Tan Xiang mused, “These two materials are extremely precious and would cost a lot of money to obtain. But Xiang Tianlin is in his prime, and I’ve never heard of him suffering from any incurable injuries. His wives and daughter are still alive, so why bother?”
“Perhaps it’s not prepared for himself,” Yang Shifei said, his face becoming solemn as he pressed his palm against the coffin lid. “Let’s open it and see if we can uncover the mystery.”
The two exchanged glances.
Since they were sure that Xiang Tianlin had ulterior motives, they naturally had nothing to hesitate about on this trip.
With determination, they both exerted force to slowly push open the wooden lid.
“…”
But upon seeing the interior of the coffin, Yang Shifei’s breath suddenly halted.
Inside lay three women who had long been dead.
Their faces were twisted, blue and black with the terror of their final moments, eyes and ears bleeding, presenting a ghastly sight.
The women, despite their horrific appearances, were fully clothed.
“Who are they?”
“They are Xiang Tianlin’s wife, daughter, and concubine,” Tan Xiang said in a shocking revelation, “I saw the woman in the middle half a year ago. Although she looked ordinary, she was still healthy.”
Yang Shifei furrowed his brows and carefully examined them, whispering, “Judging by the marks on her neck, she was probably strangled to death.”
Tan Xiang checked again and confirmed that there were only these three corpses tightly clustered together inside the coffin.
The two closed the coffin lid again and silently exited the secret chamber.
—Strange.
Both of them were puzzled.
Why did Xiang Tianlin hide the corpses of his wives and daughters here, and how did they die?
Could it be that this incident was the reason Xiang Tianlin acted against the government?
“Let’s keep looking.”
Yang Shifei suppressed his unease and continued searching around.
Tan Xiang continued to inspect the surroundings of the bookshelf and soon found a stack of envelopes tucked away in a crevice.
She carefully pulled one out and her expression grew more serious as she read its contents.
The envelopes contained correspondence between Xiang Tianlin and someone else, seemingly plotting in secret.
But as she flipped through them, the once neat handwriting became increasingly messy, until the final letter became an eerie scroll of gibberish, making it impossible to read.
“There’s a locked box in the wardrobe.” Yang Shifei whispered, “Should we force it open?”
Tan Xiang swiftly approached and decisively broke the lock.
Watching this, Yang Shifei’s mouth twitched. Who knew the maid had such strength?
Quickly dismissing his thoughts, he carefully opened the box and found two items inside.
One was a crystal-clear black jade box, and the other was a letter.
“Another letter?” Yang Shifei unfolded the paper and was surprised.
It wasn’t a correspondence with someone else, but a diary?
“Why would the Nine Layers Sect Master have the leisure to secretly write this kind of um…?”
But the more he read, the more unpleasant Yang Shifei’s expression became.
Sensing something was amiss, Tan Xiang frowned. “What does it say?”
“It’s about his recent experiences.”
Yang Shifei said, puzzled, “He mentioned that his emotions have become increasingly unstable recently, and his memory has been failing. It seems like a sign of demonic possession, but he doesn’t dare confide in anyone for fear of causing chaos in the sect. Moreover, his two wives have become increasingly frail and sickly, with extremely irritable temperaments, and even his once well-behaved daughter has become the same. The whole family has become difficult to get along with. Exhausted in body and mind, he feels like he’s going crazy.”
He carefully read the contents of the paper, “Some time ago, a group of people secretly came to the Nine Layers Sect to find him, wanting to cooperate in disrupting the order of the East city, preferably causing panic among the residents. If they could find out the locations guarded by various sects, the sect master would be generously rewarded.”
Yang Shifei and Tan Xiang exchanged glances, understanding dawning on them.
If the handwriting matched, this would be solid evidence.
“Wait a minute.”
Yang Shifei quickly noticed that in the subsequent content, Xiang Tianlin initially refused.
He considered himself a citizen of the Liang Empire and disdained such acts of seeking benefits and betraying the nation, and did not participate.
But then the situation abruptly changed.
Xiang Tianlin’s wives and daughters suddenly fell into a coma, and the mysterious group visited again, informing him that they could gift him an artifact to cure his wife and daughters.
With no other options, Xiang Tianlin ultimately agreed to the deal, and secretly deployed many spies in the East city, waiting for the Sacred Martial Stone to arrive.
And Xiang Tianlin finally got the long-awaited artifact —
A coffin.
“What is he writing?!”
Yang Shifei’s face showed shock as he turned to look at the secret room.
The three women in the coffin had been dead for many days, but the paper claimed that this artifact had an extremely beneficial effect. It restored his beloved wife and daughter’s sanity, and both sides became as harmonious as before, enjoying a happy and blissful family life.
In the handwriting, one could almost feel Xiang Tianlin’s joy.
“Is this considered harmony?”
Yang Shifei’s breath turned cold, and he felt a shiver run down his spine.
