Who Said My Wife Is A Demon!

Chapter 20 - Murk

Tan Xiang also realized that something was wrong.

She quickly retrieved the several letters from earlier and examined the various strange marks drawn on them, her brows furrowing tightly.

“Perhaps he really has been possessed,” Tan Xiang calmly analyzed. “Xiang Tianlin accidentally killed his wives and daughter, and thus lost his mind, and then got involved with enemy spies.”

“Regardless, these are all physical evidence,” Yang Shifei said, gathering up the letters. “We should hand these over to the authorities. Even if we can’t convict Xiang Tianlin of murder, at least we can limit his movements until more evidence is found.”

Tan Xiang nodded slightly, her gaze shifting to the black jade box beside her.

She reached out and carefully opened the box, finding a piece of pitch-black jade inside, its material unknown —

Hiss!

The jade suddenly emitted a piercing sound, and wisps of black smoke rose from it!

“What is this —”

The sudden turn of events changed the expressions of both of them, and they immediately closed the box.

But the speed at which the smoke dispersed was astonishing, filling half the room in the blink of an eye.

“Don’t breathe!”

Yang Shifei quickly covered his face with a cloth and was about to pull Tan Xiang away from the place.

But as he moved, he noticed that large swathes of black smoke were automatically rushing towards Tan Xiang. The nocturnal attire and face mask couldn’t stop them, and they instantly entered her body.

“Tan Xiang?!”

“Ugh.”

Tan Xiang’s delicate body trembled slightly as she staggered back two steps.

Yang Shifei’s face changed drastically, and he quickly supported her faltering body. “Are you okay?!”

“D-Don’t… don’t panic.”

But unexpectedly, after a brief moment of distraction, Tan Xiang quickly regained her composure and shook her head calmly. “I’m fine.”

Yang Shifei, nervous, asked, “But isn’t this black smoke poisonous?”

He simultaneously recalled various medicinal stores and clinics in the city, trying to figure out where he could seek help the fastest.

“I’m really fine, or rather…”

Tan Xiang turned her head slightly, allowing him to meet her crimson, ghostly eyes.

“— I’ve never felt better than I do now.”

At the moment their gazes met, Yang Shifei’s breath caught, feeling as if a heavy force had gripped his heart, only easing when the cold energy circulated through his body.

Tan Xiang blinked her crimson eyes, quickly breaking eye contact and murmuring, “I already know what happened to Xiang Tianlin and understand the ins and outs of this matter.”

Yang Shifei tapped his forehead, clearing his head somewhat. “What exactly happened?”

“Just now, that black energy is called ‘Murk,'” Tan Xiang pushed away his hands, staggering to her feet. “This substance has the ability to affect the mind. If ordinary people accidentally come into contact with it, they will gradually become insane.”

She picked up the black jade box that had fallen nearby. “This item should be the container that seals Murk. Xiang Tianlin’s transformation may have been caused by this.”

Yang Shifei’s expression was grave. “And you now…”

“I told you, the effect of this substance is for ‘ordinary people.’ I happen to not be an ordinary person,” Tan Xiang lowered her gaze and said softly. “This Murk, to me, is more like a tonic.”

“Let’s leave here first.” Yang Shifei quickly calmed down. “We’ll take all the evidence we need and rendezvous with the Chief Constable’s men after we’ve escaped.”

Tan Xiang stared at him for a moment, and her tightly clenched hands unconsciously loosened.

But as soon as she relaxed, she couldn’t help but clutch her chest, a strange flush appearing on her pretty face.

Yang Shifei was startled. “You said you were fine. What’s happening now?”

“I’ve absorbed too much Murk and lost control.” Cold sweat appeared on Tan Xiang’s forehead, her voice trembling. “I might turn into a non-humanoid monster. You should leave here first.”

“Who’s sneaking around in the Master’s room?!”

Just then, a cry rang out suddenly.

Yang Shifei inwardly cursed. His actions had attracted the attention of the disciples patrolling outside.

His mind raced, and he decided to carry Tan Xiang horizontally, smashing the window and jumping into the corridor.

With a quick glance around, he saw Nine Layers Sect disciples holding torches rushing towards them not far away, apparently intending to surround them.

“Hurry up and let go of me!”

Tan Xiang’s eyes became even redder and brighter in his arms, and she gritted her teeth. “Leave this to me to handle!”

“Quiet!”

Instead, Yang Shifei became even calmer. He made her lie prone on his back, undid his belt, and tightly bound their waists together.

Although he felt a soft, fluffy sensation from behind, like two small glutinous rice balls bulging, now was not the time for idle thoughts.

He jumped over the railing and into the backyard, sprinting towards the courtyard wall at full speed.

But just as he was about to jump over the courtyard wall, a long sword suddenly thrust towards him from the side!

Clang!

The sound of blades rang out, and a chilling killing intent came from the other side.

Yang Shifei pushed off the wall and retreated violently, avoiding the pincer attack. He saw two young men standing on the wall, holding swords and knives, their eyes cold and menacing.

“Unexpectedly, there are petty thieves sneaking into the Nine Layers Sect. Truly ignorant of death.”

“Who are you? Are you spies from the enemy nation who have infiltrated the East City?”

At the same time, two more Nine Layers Sect disciples rushed over from the side, swords drawn.

Yang Shifei’s face was cold and stern, exuding a chilling aura. In an instant, he spread out his hands and firmly caught the sharp swords between his fingers.

“Damn, this…”

The two Nine Layers Sect disciples were dumbfounded, unable to react in time. They felt a tremendous force at the hilts of their swords.

With a crisp snap, both long swords broke.

This move frightened many disciples who were about to surround them, their faces full of astonishment.

This person looked so young, yet he could break swords and stones barehanded. What level of cultivation was this?

The two young men standing on the wall also frowned, sensing danger.

Yang Shifei casually discarded the broken swords, his gaze icy.

“They are the personal disciples of the Nine Layers Sect Master, named ‘Xiang Zhao’ and ‘Xiang Yu.’ They have already cultivated their internal strength and are not easy to deal with.”

Tan Xiang lay prone on his back, bloodshot eyes roaming, emitting a slightly soft murmur. “Let me…”

“Don’t move for now. Be careful not to reveal your true form.”

Yang Shifei didn’t know what would happen then, but if Tan Xiang’s true form was indeed a terrifying monster, once it appeared in front of everyone, unless he killed everyone present, trouble would follow.

He was extremely calm at the moment, speaking neither hurriedly nor slowly. “Everyone, stop. I have something to ask you.”

“What’s there to talk about, intruding late at night—”

“Have you noticed anything strange about the Sect Master, Xiang Tianlin, recently?”

“Nonsense.” Both Xiang Zhao and Xiang Yu frowned.

“Then let me ask again, have you seen your two mistresses recently?”

“What nonsense are you talking about?” One disciple couldn’t help but angrily retort. “Everyone knows that the two mistresses took the sect master’s daughter out of the city for an outing. How could we have seen them!”

At the same time, there was a commotion coming from the direction of the hall, perhaps the Chief Constable’s men and Xiang Tianlin were fighting.

Yang Shifei glanced over, then calmly spoke again, “You might as well take a look inside Sect Master Xiang’s room. There’s a mechanism under the bed that opens a secret room, and your mistresses are inside.”

“What are you saying?”

The surrounding disciples were all full of suspicion.

Xiang Zhao, the leader, frowned even more, glancing at one of the disciples. “Chuan Ying, go inside and take a look.”

“Okay.”

The young disciple quickly ran into the room and, after a moment of searching, opened the mechanism.

After a moment, a scream was heard from inside the room, and the disciples present shouted anxiously, “Chuan Ying, what’s wrong?!”

“It’s not… It’s not me, it’s… it’s the mistresses. They… they’re dead!”

Chuan Ying ran out in a panic, his face pale. “There really is a secret room. Inside, there’s a coffin, and they’re lying in it!”

Upon hearing this, silence fell over the scene.

Yang Shifei looked around and broke the silence at the right moment. “The secret room in the room couldn’t have been built in just a few days, and it’s certainly not something I did. Moreover, it would have required avoiding the sight of all of you, and sneaking such a heavy coffin into the secret room, even stuffing the corpses of his wives and daughter inside.”

The faces of the Nine Layers Sect disciples became even more grim, and they grew increasingly uneasy as they thought about it.

Moreover, it seemed that just a few days ago, when the mistresses went out for an outing, it was their Sect Master who personally escorted them.

“We came here because Master Xiang attacked the government today, and we were ordered to sneak into the Nine Layers Sect to investigate. But unexpectedly, we found more evidence.”

Yang Shifei narrowed his eyes, pressing on step by step. “It seems you are unaware that your Sect Master Xiang has long been insane.”
