Chapter 18 - Night Visit
It had been about half an hour since the situation at the yamen changed.
Chief Constable Tie believed the speculation of the two, but did not act immediately.
In his opinion, there was still insufficient evidence to openly search for the top sect of East City or even to arrest Xiang Tianlin legitimately.
If things were to get complicated, the Nine Layers Sect might even manage to muddle through.
Because of this, after discussion, they decided to sneak into the Nine Layers Sect after dark to see if they could find decisive evidence to thoroughly arrest and convict Xiang Tianlin.
…
In the Luo Mansion, in the medicinal room.
Yang Shifei, familiar with the place, sat down on the bed and couldn’t help but chuckle quietly as he inhaled the faint scent of medicine that permeated the room.
He and this place seemed to have some fate.
“How are you feeling now, young master?”
Tan Xiang’s inquiring voice came from beside the medicine shelf, her petite figure reaching out to pick up medicine, her skirt swaying gently.
“Much better, it’s nothing,” Yang Shifei twisted his arm and smiled lightly. “Although I’m not quite sure why, I seem to be quite resistant to beatings now. I recover quickly from any injuries.”
“Your physique is indeed different from ordinary people,” Tan Xiang said, her expression cold as she walked over with a bowl of medicine paste.
Stirring the paste with a medicine pestle, she frowned slightly. “Since you’ve entrusted this matter to the Chief Constable, do you still need to go in person?”
“I don’t know Tie Hanyang very well, so I can’t help but worry,” Yang Shifei smiled. “And since Xiang Tianlin recognized both of us from the Luo Mansion, if he manages to escape, it might be detrimental to us in the future. I’m a very cautious person, I don’t want to leave behind a huge problem. Of course, I have to personally deal with this trouble.”
He didn’t think he could confront Xiang Tianlin head-on.
But with the assistance of the cold energy, he could enter an extremely calm state, and simply infiltrating the Nine Layers Sect to gather intelligence wouldn’t be difficult.
Moreover, with Tie Hanyang’s help covering them, even if something unexpected happened, there would be a chance to escape.
Tan Xiang remained silent for a moment before sitting down slowly.
“Is it worth it for the Luo Mansion?”
“What are you saying, Tan Xiang?” Yang Shifei pointed at himself, his face full of seriousness. “Although I haven’t passed your evaluation period, I am nominally the fiancé of the Luo family. Naturally, I have to stand by your side.”
With that said, he couldn’t help but laugh again. “If everyone in the Luo Mansion looked down on me, of course, I wouldn’t bother with these matters. But whether it’s Miss Luo or you, Tan Xiang, both of you are so gentle and considerate. I can’t be an ungrateful person.”
“I’m just a servant, there’s no need to mention me.” Tan Xiang said.
“I don’t care about distinctions between upper and lower class, nobility or commoner.” Yang Shifei chuckled. “In my eyes, you’re also a part of the Luo Mansion.”
Tan Xiang stirred the ointment and pursed her lips, saying nothing.
In her mind flashed the scene of Yang Shifei shielding her from the arrows, and she glanced at the scratches on his arm that hadn’t fully healed yet.
Even though those arrows couldn’t have harmed her anyway….Tan Xiang couldn’t help but sigh softly.
“Alright, take off your clothes, I’ll apply the medicine for you.”
“Huh?” Yang Shifei replied dryly, “Shouldn’t I do it myself?”
Tan Xiang looked at him coldly. “Are you worried that I’ll take advantage of you?”
“…As long as you don’t mind.”
Yang Shifei sighed inwardly and could only take off his robe, revealing his well-built upper body.
Although he used to be weak, he had become somewhat stronger after living in Niu Village for some time.
The abundant cold energy didn’t significantly change his physique in appearance, but it did make his muscles more prominent, no longer like a skeleton.
Tan Xiang only glanced at him and expressionlessly scooped up some ointment, applying it to his chest.
“..”
The icy and delicate touch made Yang Shifei tense all over.
As the slender and tender hands of the girl moved around, he felt strange, and could only keep a straight face and say nothing.
These hands were so tender, like tofu.
But in the silence, he thought of the scene in the yamen earlier, and after a moment of hesitation, he spoke up: “The sword you threw was quite powerful, not the skill of an ordinary person.”
“…Yes.”
Tan Xiang replied without raising her head. “I just didn’t think it was necessary to tell you.”
But as soon as she finished speaking, her hand paused slightly while applying the ointment. “After hearing what I just said, are you still thinking about risking danger for the Luo Mansion?”
“Why not?” Yang Shifei’s lips curved slightly. “Everyone has their secrets, and so do I. If you ever want to share, I’ll listen.”
Tan Xiang took a deep breath and shot him an exasperated look. “If you hadn’t come to the Luo Mansion, who knows how badly you’d have been deceived by others.”
“At least my judgment of people is not bad, right?”
Yang Shifei laughed nonchalantly. “Seeing how accommodating both the master and servants of the Luo Mansion are, I was willing to stay here. If they were cruel, I would have run away immediately without looking back.”
“…”
Tan Xiang hummed softly, lowering her head.
After a moment of silence, she calmed herself and said, “The medicine is applied. How long do you plan to sit there half-naked?”
Yang Shifei quickly put on his robe, feeling both amused and helpless.
Who was really taking advantage of whom?
Although it was extremely comfortable to be touched by those little hands, it made his whole body feel half numb.
“You should go back and rest first,” Tan Xiang said as she finished washing her hands and stood up. “I’ll go find the young lady later to report this matter. She’ll help us deal with the aftermath. When it gets darker, I’ll call you to go together.”
“Are you going too?”
“I’m not weaker than you. Being with you also ensures you won’t get into trouble.” Without hesitation, Tan Xiang left the medicinal room, leaving behind a light-hearted remark: “If you get injured again, I won’t be able to explain to the young lady.”
Yang Shifei stood in place, scratching his head, thinking to himself that this maid was indeed tough on the outside but tender on the inside.
…
As the night grew deeper, the candles in the mansion were extinguished.
Yang Shifei put on the night clothes prepared by Tan Xiang and rubbed his hands together.
He had planned to absorb a bit more of the cold energy from Yue Rui before setting off as a precaution. But today, Yue Rui was gone for some reason, so he had to give up on that idea for now.
Fortunately, the cold energy in his body was still abundant, which wouldn’t affect their plans.
“Are you ready?”
Tan Xiang emerged silently from under the tree, her slender and delicate figure appearing even more graceful under the night clothes.
Yang Shifei nodded slightly, tying his face mask and gloves along with her.
They couldn’t afford to be careless on this trip; after all, they were going to the top sect in the East city. Any mistake could lead to trouble.
“What did Miss Luo say?”
“The young lady will help keep an eye on those out-of-town people to prevent any covert collusion.”
Tan Xiang’s tone was calm, but a hint of coldness flashed in her eyes. “As for Xiang Tianlin, he hurriedly met with heroes from various sects at noon, his whole arm wrapped in bandages. He claimed to have injured his arm while practicing and soon declared himself unwell and returned home.”
“This person acts quite swiftly.”
After confirming their positions, they dashed towards the Nine Layers Sect under the cover of night.
The streets of the East city were already silent, with every household tightly shut, and only the faint sound of night watchmen echoing in the distance.
As they made their way, a vast estate came into view not far away, with lights flickering in the moonlight.
“You’ve arrived.”
Tie Hanyang appeared silently at the agreed location, his hands behind his back as he said in a low voice, “I’ll go in first and keep them busy. Do you have confidence in exploring the truth inside the Nine Layers Sect?”
Yang Shifei nodded calmly. “If we can’t find any clues, we’ll have to trouble Chief Tie to take action and capture him first.”
Tie Hanyang sighed helplessly at his words. “Our skills are evenly matched, it’s not that simple to determine the outcome.”
Despite his words, he quickly walked to the front of the sect and knocked heavily on the courtyard door, announcing loudly, “I’m Tie Hanyang from the yamen. I have something to discuss with Master Xiang!”
Yang Shifei and Tan Xiang exchanged a glance and moved together towards another corner of the estate, swiftly leaping over the wall to enter.
Lights began to flicker on in the mansion, and figures hurried towards the direction of the main hall.
Yang Shifei crouched under a tree, faintly seeing Xiang Tianlin’s position in the dim light. He quickly pointed in a direction, and the two of them stealthily made their way through the corridors.
“Don’t go too far; this is his bedroom.”
“Is anyone inside?”
The two of them leaned against the door and spoke in low voices, “I remember that the Master of the Nine Layers Sect has a wife and daughter, as well as a concubine. He’s gone to the main hall for a meeting; the room should be empty.”
Tan Xiang was about to take out some sleeping powder, but after listening at the door for a moment, she quickly shook her head. “There’s no one inside.”
Yang Shifei’s eyes twitched slightly, and he cautiously pushed open the door.
The two of them entered the room and closed the door behind them without making a sound.
Yang Shifei quickly went to the bedside, lifted the covers, and indeed found no one there.
“The bedding is cold; no one has been lying here.”
Tan Xiang rummaged through the desk, while Yang Shifei searched around. He soon noticed something odd and quickly looked down.
There were granule-like substances underfoot. He picked up a small amount with his fingers to inspect closely—it was dried, blackened blood.
“Xiang Tianlin was injured by me today. Could this be from then?”
Yang Shifei touched the floor and quickly dismissed the idea. It’s been only a few hours. Even if the blood had dried and clotted, it wouldn’t have been trampled into such fine particles, scattered everywhere.
