Veil of Dusk A dystopian world

Chapter 32: “Forged by Goals”

The air was heavy with the ominous energy of the Wolf Ritual as Rex watched the duel between Neo, Nia, and Kyro from the shadows. His golden eyes gleamed in the faint light of the crystals, a faint smile playing on his lips as he thought: Kyro wasn't just talented, he was obsessed with his goal. That determination reminded Rex of himself. But Kyro was still unpolished, raw – a diamond that needed to be refined.

Rex turned away as the duel came to an end. His thoughts raced. He wasn't here to make friends, but sometimes, an alliance was the most effective way to achieve one's goals.

"Talent is a precious asset, but even more valuable is the ability to shape it. Kyro… you might just be the ally I need to survive this ritual. A temporary partner. Only for as long as necessary. After that… we're rivals again."

Rex took a deep breath, shoved his hands into his pockets, and stepped out of the shadows.

Kyro was alone and exhausted from the fight when Rex approached. The stranger's steps were quiet, barely audible, but Kyro sensed his presence immediately. Instinctively, he placed his hand on the hilt of his weapon, ready for another fight.

"Relax," Rex said in a deep, calming voice. "I'm not here to fight."

Kyro remained tense, the distrust in his eyes unmistakable. "Who are you? What do you want from me?"

Rex smiled faintly. "Rex. And what I want is simple: cooperation."

Kyro raised an eyebrow. "Cooperation? Why should I trust you?"

Rex stepped closer, his gaze piercing but not threatening. "You have potential, Kyro. I watched your duel. You're good, better than most here. But be honest: how far do you think you'll get on your own? How many opponents still stand between you and your goal? Do you really think you can survive the ritual without help?"

Kyro scoffed. "I don't need anyone. Especially not someone meddling in my affairs."

"Maybe," Rex replied calmly, "but you can't afford to do everything alone. The crystals you need – they're not just going to fall from the sky. You'll be stronger with an ally by your side. I have the same goal as you: collecting crystals to move forward. You're strong, Kyro. But with me… you'll be unstoppable."

Kyro stayed silent, but Rex could see that his words were reaching him.

"I'm not here to lie to you," Rex continued. "I want the same thing you do: to pass the trial."

Kyro studied Rex for a long time. There was something about him – a presence that was hard to ignore. Charismatic but dangerous.

"And why should I take the risk?" Kyro finally asked.

Rex's smile widened, almost challengingly. "Because you have nothing to lose. And everything to gain."

The words echoed in Kyro's mind. He looked at Rex for a long moment, searching for a crack in his facade, but found none. There was a cold determination in this man, a depth that was both fascinating and unsettling. In that moment, Kyro knew: there was no other choice.

Slowly, he extended his hand. "Alright. Temporary."

Rex took it with a firm, resolute grip. "Temporary."
