Chapter 28: Chapter 28: I'm the One Making You Apologize!
The greatest divide in the world was Fang Yan sitting at one end of the private room while the boys huddled nervously at the other. No one dared to provoke Fang Yan anymore; they all kept their distance.
They had finally seen through his cunning nature. He kept insisting he wasn't good at anything, yet time and again proved they were just overestimating themselves. Whether it was dice games or arm wrestling, the outcome was always the same.
No one was foolish enough to challenge him to a drinking game or a battle of wits. Being humiliated by the enemy was one thing; there was no need to humiliate themselves further. A clear line was drawn—like two armies facing off across a river.
No one drank, no one sang, not even a word was spoken.
Noticing the awkward atmosphere, the birthday girl, Yuan Lin, stood up and said, "Let's not just sit here like statues. How about we go dance outside for a bit?"
"Sure, let's go," everyone agreed. The main floor was livelier, and they needed a different way to relax. Staying here was too stifling; even breathing felt uncomfortable.
So, a large group of them headed to the main dance floor in high spirits. The music was deafening, making conversation nearly impossible. The only way to communicate was through gestures.
Fang Yan was pulled to a corner by Jiang Qin, while the other boys and girls broke off into small groups or pairs. Fang Yan wasn't adept at this kind of wild dancing; he stood there like a lamppost.
Jiang Qin was much more lively, moving her body to the rhythm. Her petite figure swayed confidently—she seemed quite experienced.
"Come on, dance with me," Jiang Qin leaned on Fang Yan's shoulder, shouting into his ear.
"You go ahead," Fang Yan said. "I'm heading back to the room."
He turned to leave but was grabbed by Jiang Qin. Her small hands clasped his big ones, forcefully pulling him onto the dance floor, trying to get him to move with her rhythm.
Fang Yan shook his head, indicating he couldn't dance.
Jiang Qin mouthed, "I'll teach you."
Helpless, Fang Yan had to go along with her plan.
The good thing about places like this is that as long as you move randomly, people will think you're dancing. Realizing this, Fang Yan suddenly felt he had a knack for it.
Just then, the sound of an argument erupted in the crowd. Onlookers naturally formed a circle, enclosing the two parties in conflict at the center.
Fang Yan and Jiang Qin initially wanted to watch the commotion, but they realized one of the parties involved was their classmate.
"It's Yuan Lin and the others," Jiang Qin exclaimed, pulling Fang Yan's hand as they squeezed toward the center.
With trouble brewing on the dance floor, the DJ cut off the music.
"What happened?" Jiang Qin stood next to Yuan Lin and asked.
Yuan Lin pointed angrily at a bald man opposite her and said, "He groped me!"
"Young lady, you need evidence when you make accusations. When did I grope you? Without proof, I could sue you for slander," the bald man said with a sly smile. "Or perhaps you find me so handsome that you're hoping I'd touch you?"
The bald man wore a flashy T-shirt, his arms covered in tattoos. Beside him stood several burly men, clearly hardened thugs.
Hearing what the bald man said, his buddies burst into laughter.
"No wonder magpies were chirping when I woke up this morning—Brother Wolf is in for a treat!"
"This girl is so fresh, just Brother Wolf's type!"
"Actually, strong and mighty men like Brother Wolf are just what young girls crave!"
"You... perverts!" Yuan Lin's eyes reddened as she pointed at the bald man and shouted.
The bald man laughed heartily, turning to his buddies. "See? Didn't I tell you? This chick is into me—she even knows my profession!"
"That's right, we are scoundrels."
"A man who isn't a bad boy doesn't make women go wild. I'm proud to be a scoundrel!"
"You're going too far!" Nong Po pointed at Brother Wolf and his gang, shouting, "What kind of men bully a girl?"
"Exactly! Apologize to us!"
"Call the police! Let's report them!"
Yuan Lin was beautiful, one of the goddesses in the hearts of many boys, enjoying immense popularity at No. 26 Middle School. Now that she was being harassed on the dance floor, the boys naturally stepped up to defend her.
"Apologize? What's that?"
"Go ahead, call the police. I'd like to see which school you're from. Does your school allow students to hang out in places like this?"
"Bullying girls isn't heroic, true. So we'll just deal with you little punks instead!"
"You want to fight?"
The boys, adrenaline pumping, were ready to charge.
Crash—
The sound of breaking glass echoed in the center of the dance floor. A blond-haired thug held a beer bottle in each hand, smashed them together, then waved the sharp edges, shouting, "Come on, let's see some blood!"
The boys all stepped back simultaneously. They had courage, but they feared getting hurt. These naive middle schoolers were no match for these hardened thugs who lived on the edge.
"What? Scared already?" Brother Wolf laughed arrogantly. "You little brats haven't even heard of me and dare to challenge me?"
The boys were furious but didn't dare confront him further.
"So, who was it that told me to apologize just now?" Brother Wolf asked.
No one answered.
"Who told me to apologize?" Brother Wolf raised his voice, roaring. "If no one admits it, that's fine. All of you—come over here, kneel before me in a line. Each of you kiss my shoes and say, 'Brother Wolf, I'm sorry, I was wrong.'"
The students looked at each other, faces contorted, eyes bloodshot.
"Get over here!" the blond thug shouted, waving his broken bottle. "Are you deaf? Didn't you hear what Brother Wolf said?"
"We won't do it!" Nong Po gritted his teeth. He was scared, but he knew that if they did this, it would be a lifelong humiliation. They'd never shake off the disgrace of being 'the ones who kneeled.'
"Yeah, we'll never apologize!"
"If you've got the guts, then... then kill us!"
"Oh ho, some backbone!" The blond thug advanced toward them with his bottle-turned-knife. "Looks like you won't cry until you see the coffin. Let me give you a taste of pain!"
The girls screamed; some tried to run, but they were surrounded, blocked from escaping.
"I'm the one who told you to apologize." Fang Yan stepped forward, blocking the blond thug, and spoke up.
"What did you say?" the blond thug asked.
"I said—I'm the one who told you to apologize," Fang Yan repeated. "Harassing underage girls is a crime. An apology is too lenient for you."
"Fang Yan—" Jiang Qin tugged at his clothes from behind, urging him not to act impulsively.
"Oh, a hero coming to the rescue! Impressive. But do you know that by doing this, you're... courting death." The blond thug hadn't even finished his sentence when he lunged at Fang Yan with the sharp bottle aimed at his chest.
Fang Yan moved.
He extended his hand lightly. Flesh against glass—it looked like a losing battle.
"Fang Yan!" Jiang Qin shouted to stop him.
It was as if time suddenly stood still. The music froze, movements halted, eyes fixed, even breaths were held.
The bottle was still in the blond thug's hand, but the sharp end was pinched between Fang Yan's two fingers.
A crisp cracking sound was heard.
With a slight force, Fang Yan broke off a piece of the glass edge as if snapping a breadstick.
He broke off another piece.
Then a third.
Fang Yan patted the back of the blond thug's hand and said, "I'll take the rest too."
The thug's mouth hung open, pupils dilated. Obediently, he let go, allowing Fang Yan to take the weapon from his hand.
Jiang Qin was dumbfounded.
Was this really the Fang Yan she knew? The Tai Chi master who couldn't even squeeze onto a bus and got his foot stepped on by middle-aged women? The language teacher from Suzaku HighSchool her mom forced to tutor her?
Nong Po and his buddies were all stunned.
This guy... Is he a bodyguard from Zhongnanhai? A hidden superhero? How is he so incredible?
The tears in Yuan Lin's eyes stopped. She looked at Fang Yan, her eyes sparkling with stars.
This man is so cool!
Holding a handful of glass shards, Fang Yan looked at Brother Wolf and said, "So, you're Brother Wolf? Gotta have a name to call you. I'm the one making you apologize."
"Brother, are you from the underworld?" Brother Wolf stared blankly at Fang Yan.
"Don't flatter yourselves," Fang Yan felt insulted. "I'm a teacher; you're scoundrels. How could we be in the same line of work?"
"A teacher?"
Everyone present turned their gaze to Fang Yan. Was this man really a teacher?
"A personal tutor," Fang Yan awkwardly explained to the surrounding crowd. "Just sticking close to the students to protect their safety. Why else would I be at a bar?"
"No matter who you are, with skills like that... let's just drop this matter today," Brother Wolf said. "Guys, let's go."
He turned to leave. For Brother Wolf, today was utterly humiliating. He had just wanted to pick up a schoolgirl but ended up kicking an iron plate.
The students all breathed a sigh of relief. The matter was finally resolved.
"Wait," Fang Yan called out. "This isn't over."
Brother Wolf stopped, glaring at Fang Yan. "What do you mean?"
"All of you—come over here, kneel down in a line. Each of you kiss their shoes or whatever footwear and say, 'Sir, I'm sorry, I was wrong,'" Fang Yan said.
