Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Uncle, Uncle, You're Truly a Monster!
First Round: Fang Yan vs. Nong Po
Nong Po went first. He rolled the dice and got a five—not a bad number.
With a smug glance at Fang Yan, Nong Po said, "Your turn."
Fang Yan took the dice cup and remarked, "Looks like I'm going to lose."
He casually shook the cup a few times and gently placed it on the table.
"Six, six, six!" Jiang Qin leaned close to Fang Yan, cheering him on. The softness of her body and the sweet fragrance of her hair were truly a test of a man's self-control.
"You called it; you reveal it," Fang Yan said with a smile.
"Alright!" Jiang Qin swiftly lifted the cup and immediately exclaimed in delight, "It's really six! How did it turn out to be six?"
"It's all thanks to your lucky call," Fang Yan chuckled.
"Again!" Nong Po demanded, unwilling to accept defeat.
In the second round, Nong Po rolled a four—not high, but not too low either.
"If you roll a five, you'll beat him," Jiang Qin told Fang Yan.
"Your math is really sharp," Fang Yan praised.
"Of course!" Jiang Qin replied proudly, completely missing the hidden meaning in his words.
Pressing down on the dice cup, Fang Yan shook it a few times and said, "Since you want a five, you can reveal it again."
"Sure, sure!" Jiang Qin eagerly lifted the cup. Once again, she cried out in surprise, "Five! It's really five! Haha, I'm so amazing—you can all call me the Queen of Gambling!"
Nong Po drank again.
"Third round." Fire flickered in Nong Po's eyes. Losing two rounds in a row was humiliating. He grabbed the dice and shook them vigorously, slamming the cup onto the table with a bang. "Six!" he shouted.
Lifting the cup, it was indeed a six.
"Way to go, Nong!"
"Nong, you've got him this time!"
"Yeah, unless he rolls another six."
The guys finally saw hope and cheered for Nong Po.
Fang Yan smiled, took the dice, shook them a few times, and said to Jiang Qin, "You can reveal it again."
"Is that okay?" Jiang Qin hesitated. "What if we lose?"
"Then we'll drink," Fang Yan said. "It's just a glass of beer. We've won two rounds already; it's only fair to lose once."
"Then I'll really open it?"
"Go ahead."
"Six!" Jiang Qin shouted excitedly, lifting the cup abruptly. Then she stood there, stunned.
Six. The six red dots were dazzling.
"I wanted you to lose one, but why'd you reveal a six?" Fang Yan said, feigning reproach.
Jiang Qin's eyes sparkled with laughter. "I didn't mean to! But my luck is just too good—maybe I'm the Goddess of Luck! Haha!"
"It's a tie," Nong Po said disappointedly. "Let's go again."
He took the dice into his palm, muttered a quick prayer, and then put them into the cup.
Clatter—
After a long bout of shaking, he suddenly lifted the cup: one.
Nong Po's eyes went blank, and his facial muscles twitched uncontrollably.
"Oh, come on, give me a break!"
Fang Yan glanced at Jiang Qin and said, "Little sis, you've got talent. How about learning to gamble with me?"
Jiang Qin shot him a playful glare. Her delicate hands took the dice cup, gently shook it a few times, and revealed a two—just one point higher than Nong Po.
Fang Yan looked at her earnestly and said, "If you're going to win, just win convincingly. Beating someone by only one point is rather insulting, you know? One should have class. Didn't your teachers teach you that? This is too much; I can't bear to watch."
Nong Po was speechless; he felt like coughing up blood.
Two more guys stepped forward to challenge Fang Yan, but none could win. Fang Yan hadn't drunk a single glass, while the others were getting tipsy.
"Uncle, are you cheating?" one guy glared at Fang Yan in frustration.
"Yeah, how can you keep winning like this?"
"You must be cheating."
Fang Yan smiled and said, "A bet's a bet. If you think I'm cheating and can find proof, I'll drink all the remaining liquor in this room."
"No more dice," Nong Po declared. "We don't play this often; you're more experienced. Let's arm wrestle instead."
"That might not be fair," Fang Yan replied.
"What? Are you scared?" Nong Po taunted. "You're older than us, have eaten a few more years' worth of meals—you've got a big advantage."
"That's exactly my point. My advantage is so obvious—bullying you wouldn't be right," Fang Yan turned to Jiang Qin and asked, "Should I give it a try with them?"
"Beat them!" Jiang Qin pumped her small fists.
"I'll do my best," Fang Yan said. "No need to talk about winning or losing; we're all friends here."
For some reason, when Fang Yan said "I'll do my best," many felt their hearts skip a beat; chills ran down their spines.
Nong Po scrutinized Fang Yan's height and build, realizing that not everyone on his side could match up. If they competed individually, they'd be at a disadvantage.
"Each side sends one person; loser drinks," Nong Po proposed.
Fang Yan smiled. "That's not quite fair, is it? You've got six or seven people, and I'm alone—I can only send myself."
"What do you suggest then?"
Fang Yan thought for a moment. "How about this? If I win, each of you drinks three glasses. If I lose, I'll drink six glasses myself."
Nong Po hesitated briefly but then nodded. "Deal."
He turned and called out loudly, "Big Guy!"
"Here!" a deep voice responded.
Big Guy wasn't small—in fact, he was huge.
Seeing this mountain of a man sit across from Fang Yan, Jiang Qin felt uneasy.
"Nong Po, you're cheating!" Jiang Qin protested. "Big Guy isn't from our class."
"So what if he's not from our class? Can't he join in?" Nong Po grinned slyly. "Big Guy is on our team."
"Don't compete with them," Jiang Qin urged Fang Yan. "Big Guy is a well-known strongman at our school. He's always the javelin and discus champion at every sports meet."
"Is that so?" Fang Yan looked at Nong Po with mock hurt. "You guys are deliberately trying to make me drink, aren't you? This is too underhanded. I thought we were friends."
"A bet's a bet. Who said that?" Nong Po laughed heartily. The other guys wore mischievous grins that said, "We're going to get you."
"I did. A man would rather die standing than live kneeling," Fang Yan declared boldly. "I'll take him on."
"I'll be the referee!" Yuan Lin volunteered enthusiastically. "When I say start, you two begin."
"No objections here," Fang Yan said.
"None from me," Big Guy was thrilled that Yuan Lin was getting involved, his chubby face flushing with excitement.
If he could defeat this annoying guy in front of his dream girl, then maybe—in her eyes—his bulk would be seen as strength, not just size.
Actually, Big Guy was overthinking it. Unfortunately for him, his crush didn't see him that way; to her, his size was just that—size.
"Ready," Yuan Lin called out sweetly.
Fang Yan and Big Guy clasped hands, elbows resting on the table.
"Start!" Yuan Lin shouted, even swinging her delicate arm down for emphasis.
Fang Yan didn't move, and neither did Big Guy.
"I said start," Yuan Lin reminded them. What was up with these two? They weren't cooperating at all. She'd said start, but neither was applying any force.
"It's already started," Fang Yan said.
"Huh?" Everyone was puzzled. What was going on?
Neither of them was moving; how was that starting?
Soon, they noticed something.
Big Guy's chubby face turned red; sweat formed on his forehead, dripping down. He gritted his teeth; his expression was fierce; he was using every ounce of strength he had.
Even a fool could see that Big Guy was giving it his all, using strength he didn't even know he had.
But Fang Yan sat there steadily, his face calm, his heartbeat steady, as if nothing was happening.
Everyone stared at Fang Yan in shock. Who was this guy? How could he be so strong?
Big Guy was overexerting himself. Holding his breath, his bulky frame couldn't handle it; the beer he'd drunk earlier surged up, and he spewed it out, splashing onto both his and Fang Yan's hands.
"This guy—" Fang Yan laughed. "Resorting to secret weapons, huh?"
Pfft—
The whole room burst into laughter.
Big Guy's red face turned even redder. Embarrassed, he stammered, "I lost, I lost; I'm no match for you."
Fang Yan released his grip. "Thanks for going easy on me. Almost fell for your secret weapon."
Big Guy's face turned purple with frustration, and he dashed into the restroom without looking back.
Jiang Qin laughed so hard she was gasping for breath. She pulled out tissues from her bag to wipe Fang Yan's hand. "You're so bad—you are so bad!"
"Uncle, you're adorable. I just adore you!"
"Yeah, you're so charming. I just want to pinch your cheeks."
"Such thick skin; truly rare!"
Yuan Lin's beautiful eyes sparkled as she looked at Fang Yan. "I want to find an uncle like you too!"
Jiang Qin quickly clung to Fang Yan's arm. "Hands off; he's mine!"
A classic scene of two girls vying for one guy unfolded before their eyes, leaving the other boys heartbroken.
In their minds, "uncle" had become the most detestable word.
Fang Yan stood up and said to everyone, "I'm really not Jiang Qin's boyfriend; please don't pick on me anymore."
The guys felt like another knife had been twisted into their hearts.
Seriously, they thought, when you say things, at least have a conscience. Who's picking on whom here?
Couldn't get you drunk, couldn't beat you at dice, couldn't defeat you in arm wrestling—you, at your age, would it kill you to let us win once?
"Uncle, uncle, you're truly a monster!"
