Chapter 26: Chapter 26: A Man Cannot Say He’s Incompetent!
People often pursue what they don't have. For instance, kids enjoy wearing adult shoes, or in Jiang Qin's case, applying lipstick and eyeliner to appear deliberately mature and sexy.
They know that youth and natural beauty are their greatest assets, but still, they yearn for change. It's just a natural phase of life.
Thus, Fang Yan didn't stop her; instead, he chose to accompany her.
The taxi stopped in front of the bar. Fang Yan turned to Jiang Qin and said, "You promised me—after tonight, you'll accept my tutoring and focus on improving your Chinese grades."
"I know, Teacher Fang," Jiang Qin replied sweetly.
The taxi driver looked astonished, stealing glances at them through the rearview mirror, curious about the relationship between the two.
A male teacher bringing a female student to a bar? The world is getting too wild!
Fang Yan pulled out his wallet to pay. The driver, while handing him the change, asked with a smile, "What school do you teach at?"
"First High," Fang Yan replied offhandedly.
"Oh, that's a good school," the driver remarked, then sped away, silently vowing never to let his son apply to First High.
The Pirate Bar. It's said to be the most popular hangout spot for students in Huacheng.
It was clear Jiang Qin wasn't here for the first time. She led Fang Yan inside with ease.
"They're in a private room. Let's go," Jiang Qin leaned in close to Fang Yan's ear to speak, as the bar was too noisy.
Fang Yan nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings.
The bar catered to students, offering private rooms for gatherings and an open dance floor where people could dance freely. The prices were affordable, making it a popular choice among students.
Most of the crowd were young people. Even though they were dressed up with makeup, Fang Yan could still tell from their eyes and movements that they were students. There were also some shady older men mingling among them, clearly looking to make moves on the young female students.
Fang Yan felt a pang of disgust. How could these men be so shameless?
"Hurry up," Jiang Qin, noticing Fang Yan's wandering gaze, gave his arm a sharp pinch.
"Take it easy," Fang Yan frowned. "Fix your clothes; your shoulder is showing."
"Tsk," Jiang Qin sneered.
Which woman comes to a bar without showing a little skin? If you're not showing any, you can hardly say hello to anyone.
Jiang Qin dragged Fang Yan along and confidently pushed open the door to a private room, where the boys and girls inside erupted into cheers.
"The boss is here!"
"Qin Jie, you're late. You owe us a drink as punishment!"
"Wow, our school's beauty queen brought a handsome guy along. Nong Po, you must be disappointed."
Beauty queen?
Fang Yan glanced at Jiang Qin beside him, thinking to himself, Looks like this girl is quite popular at school.
But what's with the "boss" title? Could it be that Jiang Qin is the oldest among them? She didn't seem like it.
"This is Fang Yan," Jiang Qin introduced him, her arm naturally looped around his, "our family's uncle."
Our family's uncle?
Fang Yan's face darkened.
I'm not old, and I'm definitely not an uncle!
What made him even more upset was that, thanks to Korean dramas, the term "uncle" now carried a certain flirtatious meaning. Was she trying to make everyone think they were a couple?
Fang Yan felt he'd been tricked. She'd only said she wanted him to accompany her, not that he'd be playing this "role."
"Jiang Qin is my niece," Fang Yan quickly clarified. He wasn't falling for this trap.
The dozen or so boys and girls in the room paused, then burst out laughing.
"Qin Qin, your uncle is hilarious."
"Yeah, and he's so handsome."
"He's even wearing a Zhongshan suit—so classy. I love mature men with style!"
"This isn't what it looks like, this isn't what it looks like," Fang Yan felt like crying. The more he explained, the more convinced the girls became that he was Jiang Qin's boyfriend.
But he really wasn't! He was her tutor, her teacher.
Jiang Qin turned to the girl in the white princess dress, with a silver crown on her head—a very pretty girl standing in the middle of the room—and said, "Yuan Lin, happy birthday."
As she spoke, she handed over a beautifully wrapped gift box. It was something Jiang Qin had prepared in advance; Fang Yan had no idea about it.
"Thank you, Qin Qin," Yuan Lin said as she took the box, her eyes never leaving Jiang Qin's face. She smiled and said, "Qin Qin, you've really moved ahead of us. I thought you weren't dating in high school."
"Love is hard to predict," Jiang Qin replied with a sweet smile. "I used to think I wouldn't fall for anyone, but when the right person appears, you just know—he's the one. You want to be with him forever."
"This is love, isn't it?" Yuan Lin said wistfully. "I can practically smell love in the air when you talk."
"Yes, this is love. The unbearable weight of life, but we must grit our teeth and endure it—for love and for those we love."
"I envy you so much."
"You'll have your day too. You'll meet someone who's right for you, and you'll walk through life hand in hand."
Listening to Jiang Qin and Yuan Lin, these two overly dramatic young girls, discuss their views on love and life, Fang Yan felt his nerves begin to fray.
Was this some kind of play? Or had Jiang Qin lied to him, bringing him not to a birthday party but to some sort of theater group where they were reciting lines?
Yuan Lin finally shifted her gaze to Fang Yan, extending her hand toward him. "Hello, I'm Yuan Lin, Jiang Qin's classmate and friend."
"Hello," Fang Yan said as he shook her hand, "but please don't misunderstand. I'm not Jiang Qin's boyfriend."
Yuan Lin blinked playfully at Jiang Qin, then said with admiration, "Your uncle really looks after you. I'm so jealous."
"That's the benefit of finding a mature older man. He knows how to take care of you."
Fang Yan felt there was an unbridgeable gap between him and these young people.
The girls welcomed Fang Yan warmly, but the boys looked at him with hostility. After all, they had all seen Jiang Qin as unattainable. None of them had a chance with her, but they didn't want anyone else to either.
But now, here comes this random older guy, swooping in and taking her away. Of course, they were upset.
"Jiang Qin, you're late. Three bottles of beer as punishment."
"Yeah, let your uncle help you drink if you can't handle it."
"Uncle, how old are you? It must feel awkward being around us young folks, right?"
Hearing their mockery about his age, Fang Yan wanted to pull out his ID badge and shout, I'm a teacher! Write your names a thousand times each!
Unfortunately, since he hadn't been at Suzaku High School long, he hadn't been issued a badge yet.
And more importantly, he'd been fired. No badge would ever come.
Jiang Qin turned to Fang Yan, smiling sweetly, "Uncle, I'm counting on you."
"My alcohol tolerance isn't great," Fang Yan admitted sheepishly.
"It's just three bottles. Don't worry, beer has a low alcohol content; you won't get drunk," said Nong Po, a stylish boy with clean features, hair styled like Rukawa Kaede, and an earring. He was one of the top contenders pursuing Jiang Qin. "Uncle, it's a rule for our gatherings. You wouldn't want Jiang Qin to break the rules, right? After all, she's the famous 'big sister' at school."
"Shall I give it a try?" Fang Yan hesitated, then took the first bottle and gulped it down.
"So cool!" The girls cheered.
"Here's the second one," Nong Po handed him another bottle.
"I really can't…" Fang Yan wiped his mouth but accepted the second bottle and drank it quickly.
"Just one more," Nong Po said.
"I'll really be drunk if I drink more…" Fang Yan said as he took the third bottle and started drinking.
"Uncle! Uncle! Uncle!" The girls cheered, clapping in rhythm.
Hearing their sweet, clear voices, Fang Yan suddenly felt several years younger.
After finishing the third bottle, Jiang Qin pulled a tissue from her bag and wiped Fang Yan's mouth. "Sit down and rest a bit. Do you want something to eat?"
"Don't do that," Fang Yan protested. Having a young girl wipe his mouth like this—it felt indulgent, but he was filled with guilt.
"I insist," Jiang Qin said, "it's something I should do."
Seeing that three bottles of beer hadn't knocked Fang Yan out, the boys weren't ready to give up.
They huddled together for a quick discussion before Nong Po stepped forward again.
"Uncle, it's our first time meeting. Let me propose a toast," Nong Po said, holding up a glass.
A drinking contest?
Fang Yan didn't accept right away. Instead, he smiled at Nong Po and said, "Drinking like this is no fun. How about we play a little game?"
"What game?" Nong Po asked.
"We could play drinking games, recite couplets, roll dice, or even arm wrestle," Fang Yan suggested.
Nong Po thought it over and said, "Let's roll dice and bet on the numbers. Each of us will roll three times, one die each. Whoever rolls the lower number drinks."
With so many of them, each betting three times, they were determined to get Fang Yan drunk.
"Sure. You guys are young, I'll go along with whatever you choose," Fang Yan agreed with a nod.
Seeing a game start, everyone gathered around.
"Can you handle this?" Jiang Qin asked, tugging on Fang Yan's sleeve with concern.
"A man can't say he's incompetent," Yuan Lin giggled from the side. The girls loved the excitement of the scene.
"I'll try to win less," Fang Yan said.
In his heart, Nong Po smirked, Let's see if you can walk out of here on your own tonight.
