Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Boundaries and Shamelessness!
"Fang Yan," Lu Chaoge finally couldn't resist and hurled a magazine at him. "What I mean is—you're supposed to be helping me. You charge ahead, and I cover you from behind, making sure you don't get hurt."
Fang Yan deftly caught the magazine and replied, "But you didn't protect me very well. I've already fallen."
"As compensation, I've decided to die alongside you," Lu Chaoge retorted.
Many ponder what true tacit understanding is. It's when no words are spoken, yet both people know the secrets in each other's hearts.
Fang Yan understood what Lu Chaoge needed, so he confidently entrusted his back to her for protection.
Lu Chaoge knew Fang Yan's nature, which is why she repeatedly stood up to shield him from the storm.
This time, the winds were fierce, and the rain poured down hard. She had failed to protect him; Fang Yan had been expelled, and she had submitted her resignation.
"Isn't that a bit too impulsive?" Fang Yan asked with a smile. "You could still wait for a better person or a better opportunity."
"We Chinese are accustomed to waiting. We think patience is the supreme virtue," Lu Chaoge shook her head. "But time waits for no one. By the time the right person or opportunity comes, I might not have the energy or ability to seize it. The best time to do great things is while we're still young. We can rest when we're old."
"What's your plan?" Fang Yan asked.
"I'll look for another opportunity," Lu Chaoge replied.
"Before you leave, could you check on my paycheck?" Fang Yan asked.
When Jiang Qin came home with her schoolbag, she saw Fang Yan squatting in the courtyard, doing laundry.
She tiptoed over and suddenly yelled from behind him, "Aah—!"
Just as she was about to give him a good scare, Fang Yan swiftly turned and flicked her forehead with a loud thwack.
Rubbing her sore forehead, Jiang Qin grumbled, "Hey, how could you do that?"
"How could you do that?" Fang Yan retorted.
"What did I do?"
"You tried to scare me from behind."
"But I didn't manage to scare you, yet you still hit me—"
"That's because I'm always on guard."
"Hmph." Jiang Qin wrinkled her nose and asked, "Why are you home so early?"
"Because I don't have any classes this afternoon."
"But even if you don't have classes, shouldn't you wait until the students are dismissed?" Jiang Qin smirked. "Did you skip work early?"
"I'm not bragging," Fang Yan said as he lifted the clothes from the bucket, wrung them dry, and hung them on the rack. "Because of my excellent teaching performance, the school administration granted me special permission to leave early—"
"Really?"
"If you don't believe me, go ask around at Suzaku HighSchool," Fang Yan replied, puffing out his chest. "Everyone knows I'm kind of a big deal there."
"I find that hard to believe," Jiang Qin shook her head and sighed. "Fang Yan—"
"Call me Teacher Fang."
"Teacher Fang, you know you have the face of a con artist, right?"
"Really?" Fang Yan glanced at his reflection in the well. "Doesn't seem like it. My features are quite proper."
Suddenly, Jiang Qin remembered something and said, "Teacher Fang, do you have plans for tonight?"
"Aren't we supposed to have tutoring?"
"Of course," Jiang Qin nodded. "That's the official reason—"
"And the real reason?"
"Come with me somewhere," Jiang Qin said.
"And why should I?" Fang Yan rolled his eyes and turned to leave.
"One of my classmates is having a birthday party at a bar tonight, and she invited the whole class. There'll be lots of pretty girls!"
"Kids these days," Fang Yan said, shaking his head. "So young, and already straying from the right path. Which bar? I'll go and educate them properly."
Jiang Qin's lips curled into a sly smile. "Just follow along, and I'll take you when it's time."
"Let me be clear, though. Even if they're your classmates, when I criticize them, don't interfere—As a teacher, I have principles and boundaries."
"You better check if you're even wearing any underwear," Jiang Qin teased before running into the house with her schoolbag.
Fang Yan touched his pants—he felt a chill inside.
"These kids today… how could she know something so private about her teacher? Outrageous."
Even though Fang Yan was no longer a teacher at Suzaku HighSchool, he still enjoyed certain privileges at Aunt Li's house.
To ensure Fang Yan continued tutoring her daughter, Aunt Li prepared an even more lavish dinner than usual: grilled beef ribs, sour cabbage with intestines, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, garlic stir-fried greens, and a large pot of seafood soup. Truly, a parent's love knows no bounds—no, a mother's love knows no bounds.
As Fang Yan ate, guilt gnawed at him. I really should find time to teach this girl properly; who knows how terrible her grades have gotten...
Jiang Qin, with her small appetite, put down her chopsticks early and ran upstairs.
After Fang Yan had finished eating, Jiang Qin came downstairs with her schoolbag and said to her parents, "Dad, Mom, I'm going to Teacher Fang's for tutoring."
Aunt Li beamed, nodding approvingly. "Alright. Just don't stay too late and disturb Teacher Fang's rest."
She turned to Fang Yan, saying, "Fang Yan, thank you so much."
Jiang Qin's father raised his glass and said gratefully, "Teacher Fang, let's have a toast."
Aunt Li slapped his hand and scolded, "You fool! Teacher Fang still has to tutor our daughter. What if he gets drunk?"
Jiang Qin's father chuckled and said nothing.
Fang Yan liked the man, so he smiled and said, "Brother Jiang, don't worry. I'll make sure Jiang Qin gets a proper tutoring session."
Jiang Qin rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed by his words.
Fang Yan opened the door to his small room, and Jiang Qin followed him in with her schoolbag.
Jiang Qin glanced around and said, "I'm going to use the bathroom first."
"We're just doing tutoring—" Fang Yan hesitated. "No need to shower, right?"
Jiang Qin laughed in exasperation. "And you call yourself a teacher? Thinking like that about kids."
"—" Fang Yan felt wronged. He was just trying to remind her a shower wasn't necessary; how did that make him the bad guy?
"Don't peek," Jiang Qin warned before shutting the bathroom door behind her with her schoolbag.
Soon, the rustling of clothes came from inside.
"I hate when people challenge my weak spots," Fang Yan muttered under his breath.
"What did you say?" Jiang Qin's sharp ears picked up his words.
"I said hurry up; we need to start tutoring," Fang Yan replied. After all, I owe it to her parents to improve her grades.
Jiang Qin fell silent.
After a while, the bathroom door opened.
Jiang Qin stood in the doorway, and Fang Yan was struck by a surreal sense of time travel.
Was this still Jiang Qin? She looked completely different!
What was Jiang Qin like before?
She usually wore her blue school uniform, with long hair either loose or tied in a ponytail, her lively eyes sparkling with charm. Though a bit mischievous, she was obedient in front of her parents—a typical, sweet middle school girl.
Now, Jiang Qin was wearing a short black skirt, a sleeveless white T-shirt, and a sheer, web-like jacket.
Her slender, long legs were wrapped in black stockings, and high heels gave her an oddly mature look for her age.
Her lips were bright red, as if they were dripping blood, and her eyes were framed by long, curled eyelashes, enhanced with cosmetic lenses.
In just a short time, the sweet girl had transformed into a nightclub princess. Fang Yan could almost hear something breaking inside him.
After a long pause, Fang Yan finally asked, "What… what are you doing?"
"Didn't I tell you? I'm taking you to my classmate's birthday party. Come on, change your clothes."
"Change clothes?" Fang Yan asked.
Jiang Qin pointed to his Zhongshan suit. "You're not going to wear that, are you? It's way too old-fashioned! You'll embarrass me."
"-" Fang Yan gritted his teeth to hold back his anger. This brat! Me, a dignified teacher, going to some student's birthday party? If anyone found out, how would I ever save face?
Jiang Qin rummaged through his closet, clearly frustrated. "Don't you have any decent clothes?"
"All my clothes are decent," Fang Yan replied. "I don't own any indecent ones."
When Fang Yan had run away from home, he wore a long robe to avoid suspicion. At Suzaku HighSchool, both male students and teachers wore Zhongshan suits, which he'd bought for work. Now, these were the only two outfits he had—he hadn't even had time to buy extra underwear.
"Forget it, forget it," Jiang Qin sighed, thoroughly disappointed. "Just wear that. Even though it's old-fashioned, at least it doesn't look sleazy—"
"-" Fang Yan was almost in tears. Her standards for me are that low?
"Jiang Qin," Fang Yan said seriously.
"What?" Jiang Qin peeked out the window, then whispered, "Keep it down, don't let my parents hear."
"I want to have a talk with you," Fang Yan said. In the world of martial arts, it's said that if you receive a drop of kindness, you should repay it tenfold. Having eaten Aunt Li's meals twice—how many drops of kindness is that?
He couldn't just stand by and watch her go astray.
"If you're going to tell me to study hard, avoid boring parties, and not dress provocatively at night, just save it."
"-" Fang Yan fell silent. She'd already said everything he wanted to say.
"Let's go," Jiang Qin said, wrapping her arm around his. "Teacher Fang, the pretty girls are getting impatient."
Fang Yan's eyes flashed with resolve as he growled, "I'll teach them a good lesson."
