Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 21: Almost

(We'll be there shortly, careful not to be spotted by the search party, we don't need gunmen trying to hunt us down,) said Dean.

(It'll probably only be Harry, Charlie, and a couple of officers, nothing big,) said Jake.

(I got her scent, the red bitch, she's out here,) informed Jared.

(That's not good,) said Sam.

(It's fine, let's prioritize finding the search party and protecting them while keeping track of where the scent leads,) said Dean.

They slowed upon spotting the search party, shadowing their movements. The vamp showed when Harry hung back to wipe something on the ground with his boot.

Dean moved the instant she appeared.

(Shit! She's got Harry!) Shouted Sam, right behind him.

(No!) screamed Leah.

Dean lunged, tackling her away, his jaws just missing her head as she proactively dodged ahead of time by leaning away.

Rolling to her feet, she didn't waste any time and fled with the pack hot on her tail.

Harry, clutching his chest, could hardly believe it when he recognized the golden form of his son-in-law saving his life.

(What's Happening!) Shouted Leah.

(Dean saved him, we're chasing her now,) reported Sam.

(Where?) growled Leah.

(To the cliffs, she's going for the water,) said Jared.

(Not if I get her first!) said Leah, intending to cut them off.

Their speed unfortunately didn't amount to much when she zigzagged through the trees, changing directions on a dime. Something their wolf bodies couldn't manage.

(We're running out of time,) said Jake.

Pushing his legs for all their worth, Dean closed the gap, jaws extended, he could practically taste her he was so close, and then she wasn't. One minute she was there, the next he was snapping on air as she used a nearby tree to kick dodge off of, avoiding his attack without even looking back once.

Realizing things were more than they seemed, he continued the pursuit.

(Cliff's ahead!) Jared reminded.

Leah jumped out from cover and attacked. Anticipating it, the redhead rolled back and kicked Leah into the others, catching Dean and Sam.

Jared and Jake avoiding the collision ran around and came at her from both sides jaws bared.

Moving towards Jared, she slipped by his left side, pulling him around and kicking him right into Jake, breaking bones as a loud snap was heard followed by a painful whine.

As all that was happening, Paul, who was unusually quiet up till now, soared over the entangled group of Sam, Dean, and Leah, taking the redhead by surprise as her eyes widened after the kick to his unexpected presence.

Gritting her teeth, she braced herself for the inevitable while maneuvering her body into the best position to survive.

Seizing his chance, Paul's teeth managed to clamp onto her shoulder briefly, forced to let go when her teeth sunk into his sensitive nose, and a sharp-toed kick took out his right eye.

(Fuck, my fucking eye!) yelled Paul, shaking his head in pain.

Free, the redhead booked it to the ocean as her exposed venom began smoldering under the low light from the cloudy sky above.

Dean, Sam, Leah, and Jake chased her to the edge where she dove to safety.

(Don't Follow Her Into The Water!) ordered Dean.

Jake came to a screeching halt at the edge.

(What? Why?) growled Leah.

(Unless you somehow found out you can breathe underwater or swim like an otter, she'll tear you apart in the water,) said Dean.

(I want her dead!) Leah growled, baring her fangs angrily.

(That might be harder than we thought, she must have a gift of evasion or danger sense, the way she dodged me without even looking, the way she keeps coming back, confident she can escape,) said Dean.

(Paul, Jared, you alright?) asked Sam checking in.

(I'm healing,) Paul grunted, pawing his hurt nose.

(I'm good,) said Jared, limping over.

They all turned around and started heading back to talk as Jake continued to stare out, and as he was about to join them, he caught movement to his left.

(Bella!) cried Jake, jumping in after her.

(Shit, Jake just jumped in, he turned human,) said Jared.

(The fuck, why the dumbass do that?) asked Paul.

(Alright let's...) Dean started but was cut off by the arrival of Quil.

(Dean, I need to talk to you privately, it's urgent,) said Quil.

(Sam, you deal with this, jump in to help him if something goes wrong,) said Dean.

(I got this,) said Sam, leading the others away.

Dean followed Quil who shifted back to human so the others wouldn't overhear.

Turning human, Dean asked, "What's this about Quil?"

"I didn't know how to break the news, so I thought I'd tell you first, it's about Harry, he had a heart attack, and he didn't make it," said Quil.

Hearing an anguished howl behind him, Dean looked at Quil irritatingly, "Get out of here Quil, go back and guard the reservation, now!"

Quil booked it out of there feeling wronged as Leah came bursting through the brush with watery eyes, "It can't be true, it can't."

Dean said the only thing he could, "I'm sorry."

"But you saved him," she cried, shoving him, "You saved him!" she wailed hitting his chest.

Pulling her into a hug, he whispered, "I thought I did."

Stiffening, she leaves his grasp, "I have to go, I can't be here right now," she says shifting and running away.

Shifting back, he was bombarded with conversations about what's happened with Harry, Jake, and Bella.

(I can't deal with this right now, Sam you're in charge while I'm gone, keep everyone safe,) said Dean.

(You can count on me,) said Sam.

He then sprinted north following her scent towards their favorite spot. Catching another mournful howl as he neared his destination.

Walking onto an empty beach, he finds Leah curled up nude weeping.

Without saying anything he sits beside her and pulls her towards him, where she turns and buries her face into his chest and sobs uncontrollably as he consoles her as best he can.
