Chapter 22: Seth
When she was calm enough, Dean reminded her of what was waiting, "Come on, we need to get you home, your mother and brother will be worried about you."
"Oh, god, I don't think I can face her," said Leah.
"Of course you can, she needs you as much as you need her right now," said Dean.
"You don't understand, I failed them, I couldn't protect him," said Leah shaking.
"You didn't fail anyone, no one can prevent a sudden heart attack, and if anyone failed anyone it was me, I didn't stay to check on him afterward," said Dean lowering his head.
"No, I also didn't check on him when I heard," Leah sniffed.
"Enough self-pity," said Dean pulling her to her feet, "A really shitty thing happened that none of us were ready for, what we can do is be strong for the loved ones we still have, let's go home, Leah."
She wiped her eyes and nose, though the tears kept coming, "You're right, my mom needs me."
Shifting into their wolves, they run home.
Approaching the front door, it swings open, and before she can say anything she's swept up into her mom's loving embrace, tears flowing.
"I'll go check on Seth," said Dean, walking around them to his room.
Hearing sniffling, he gently knocks on the door. Enter after receiving no answer.
"Hey Seth, it's me, wanted to check in on you," said Dean.
Seth pulls the covers over his head.
Dean sighs, sitting at the foot of the bed, thinking of something to say, regardless of how out of depth he was in this situation.
"You know it's okay to be sad right, something terrible's happened to you and it's okay to express your feelings about the unfairness of the world," said Dean.
Hearing him cry under the covers, Dean stands up to leave, "I'll be here for you when you need me."
The next morning, Dean cooks breakfast for everyone.
"I can't thank you enough for doing this for us," said Sue grabbing her cup of coffee.
"It's the least I can do," said Dean.
Rubbing his back, she plants a thankful kiss on his cheek, "You're a good man, Dean, I just wish Harry saw it before he passed."
She inhaled deeply, "Smells good, I can't wait," said Sue, watching him work.
"It'll be ready soon, hopefully, the aroma drags the others out of their rooms," said Dean.
Sitting at the kitchen table, she sips her coffee, "I don't think anyone ate dinner yesterday, they must be starving."
"Speaking of the devils, morning sleepyheads," said Sue.
"Morning," came Seth's groggy response.
"Morning," grumbled Leah.
"Breakfast is ready," said Dean, serving it up.
"Thanks," said Leah.
"Take as much as you want, plenty more where that came from," said Dean.
A knock on the door interrupted their peaceful morning.
"I'll get it, stay and eat," said Dean before Sue could stand, who gave a grateful smile.
Opening the door, "Police chief," said Dean.
"Morning Dean, are the Clearwater's home?" asked Charlie.
"They're eating breakfast if you'd like to join us?" Dean asked politely, inviting him in.
"Oh no, that's okay, I just came to give my condolences and deliver a final message," said Charlie somberly, taking off his hat and stepping in.
"Morning, Sue, Leah, Seth," greeted Charlie.
"Morning Charlie, would you like a plate?" asked Sue.
Charlie declined, "No, no, I have to get back to work after this."
"Wanted to give you all my condolences for what happened and give you Harry's final words," said Charlie, playing with his hat.
Sue grabs hold of her children for support.
Feeling the room grow tense, Charlie continued before it became too difficult, "The first parts mainly for you Leah..." she stiffened anxiously, "...and the last part I think is in general for everyone..." Clearing his throat, "...His last words were that you have his blessing and he's sorry."
Sue's hand goes to her mouth as Leah's eyes watered.
Seth on the other hand, stormed out, the back.
"I'll go get him," said Dean.
"Dean dear, Seth felt hot," informed Sue on his way out.
"Felt fine to me," said Leah, only to get a deadpanned look from everyone except the chief in response.
"Oh," she said embarrassingly when realization hit her.
"Is he sick, should I go after him too?" asked Charlie.
"That won't be necessary, I trust Dean to handle it," said Sue, giving Dean a nod.
"If you're sure," said Charlie, "I do need to get back to work, let me know if you need anything."
"We will, thank you, Charlie," said Sue.
...
Following Seth's scent to the woods, he spots new paw prints in the dirt.
Placing the extra clothes down, he shifts.
(Seth it's alright, remember the stories,) said Sam.
(Stories? like the legends?) asked a bewildered Seth.
(Hey little man, welcome to the pack,) said Dean nonchalantly.
(Dean! I'm a wolf Dean, what do I do?) Seth asked fearfully as a giant golden wolf found him.
(Whatever you want,) said Dean, calming Seth as he realized who it was.
(Dean,) came Sam's disapproving tone.
(I got this, I'll show him the ropes, give us time to ourselves,) said Dean, happy to take the boy under his wing and get his mind off his father.
(Alright, welcome Seth,) said Sam.
More welcomes came pouring in from a few others before everything went silent, leaving the two of them alone to talk without interference.
(Come on Seth, I'll show you around,) said Dean.
(Okay!) said Seth excitedly. The tall and gangly wolf with oversized paws and sand-colored fur trotted along behind him.
After explaining everything and playing a bit in between, Seth didn't let the news of vampires dampen his mood, fully immersing himself in his wolf senses.
Dean was happy to finally have someone full-heartedly on board right from the get-go with no moaning and groaning about woe is me, though to be fair, Quil and Embry were pretty cool about it too, not counting his mate.
...
Walking back home after much convincing that he couldn't just stay a wolf and leave his family, Seth was still super giddy, "Leah will be so jealous."
Dean snorted in amusement, "Yeah, about that..."
"Hm?" Seth looked at him questioningly.
"Seth! Don't you ever run away like that again, do you know how worried I was!" yelled Sue.
"Ah!" Seth yelped, caught by surprise at her anger.
He was then pulled into a tight hug, "You can't do that to me, not now," whispered Sue.
"I'm sorry," Seth sniffed, all the emotions of yesterday welling back up as he hugged her tightly.
"Ow, careful dear, you're stronger now," said Sue.
Seth instantly let go, "Oh no, did I hurt you I didn't mean to."
"It's okay dear, come here, gently this time," said Sue softly as they hugged again.
"Wait a second, you know?" asked Seth.
"Of course, dear, your father was on the council, and he could never keep anything from me," said Sue.
"Oh," said Seth.
"Plus, your sister is also one," said Sue.
"What!" Seth exclaimed with Dean chuckling in the background.
