The Otherworldly Mercenary

Chapter 3: Ch 3 - Training and Truth

In that way, Seph's life began in that weird and desolate place.

Seph was very anxious at first. Even though he had some skills with swords and guns due to his experience of being a mercenary but the first thing Hel did was to wipe that out.

After that, she started his training from the very basics.

The first thing Seph was assigned to do was to 'simply walk'.

According to Hel, "A human being can become a master of any martial art if he or she can move his or her body as he or she pleases, without a single millimeter of deviation."

And to achieve this, Hel said, one must learn 'how to move one's body properly'.

Seph thought that it would be very easy, but he only realized how wrong his way of walking was after Hel pointed it out hundreds of times if not more.

Seph was so embarrassed by it that he could feel his cheeks burning.

But he had to say Hel was really a great teacher.

Regardless of how much he screwed up, Hel never yells at him. What did he do wrong? How should he be aware of it next time? She would carefully teach him that every time.

Thanks to Hel, Seph gradually began to understand the correct way to move his body.

Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that he realized how much he had been divergent in my body movements from what he had imagined. And as his understanding progressed little by little, the difficulty level of the training also increased.

A simple walk turned into a run, or actually using swords and spears.

And before he realized it, 200 years had passed.

"I don't feel like I'm getting any stronger.... is that okay? I've done nothing but swing a sword properly, no ?"

"Yes, that's good enough. You can imitate any martial art just by looking at it. It is not worth the trouble to learn."

Hel simply said. "It's more than that...,"

And... She trailed off.

"What you need to learn now is another counterpart to the martial arts. Well, I don't have to tell you this, do I ?"

When Seph was asked this question, he came up with an answer.

"Could it be... magic...! ?"

Hel shook her head and said. "Nope. It is not about magic, but about magical power... Or more precisely the Origin Powers!"

"... How is that different ?" Seph asked.

"Every ability, power, and skill originates from the Origin. The ability that you called Time manipulation last time is nothing but a cheap trick in my eyes. During my time, there was no concept of time and any normal entity could use that ability."

"Just what in the world are you, Hel?"

"I am one of the first three Primordial Existence that came to life when there was nothing but endless nothingness. We have no idea of what we were and why we existed in the first place. Then we slowly grew sentient and gave birth to more life. And that life in result gives birth to more life and that's how the world come into existence..."

"But if that's the case, why are you sealed here?"

"Because as life grows, they come to fear us... The eldest... he is not like me and that's why everyone fears him the most and maybe which resulted in them targeting me... Anyway, it's all in the past. And you should focus on your training."

"Hah... means another 200 years of basic training..."

When his shoulders slumped, Hel laughed and shook her head.

"Ha-ha-ha, what are you talking about? How can that be ?"

"Eh, really ?!"

Seph took a sigh of relief and expected that it would be surprisingly easy to learn it after listening to her but her next words broke his heart.

"It can't be more than 200 years. At the very least, it would take 10,000 years! Kuha-ha-ha-ha !"

"..."

Thus began the tremendous training in magic.

When Hel said 10,000 years, Seph thought she was exaggerating it but once Seph had completed his 20,000 years in that place he realized how wrong he was.

Because even after all those years, he was only able to scratch the surface of the Origin power.

Finally, after 1,000,000 years later, Hel muttered to herself.

"一Well, it's about time."

"What do you mean?" Seph asked in confusion.

In these past million years, Seph had grown accustomed to his lifestyle in the place. It was like despite the lack of Life in that small world, Seph had found peace beside Hel.

Hel smiled and asked him to follow her.

Seph walked behind her, wondering what she was going to teach him next.

A few minutes later, she paused and uttered. "Are you ready to go back to your life?"

"What are you saying...?" As he spoke, a negative sensation emerged in his heart. "I don't want to..."

"Now don't make jokes... You have become stronger than before and have learned everything. You will be allowed to depart from this realm after completing one final task.

"No! That's not possible... You're not capable of such cruelty." Seph bellowed fiercely.

Hel gave a small smile. "I assumed you had also observed it. If you murder me now, this universe will vanish and you will be free to leave it behind because I have transferred my Origin into you."

"No! I don't... There must be an alternative." With anxiety, Seph said.

"There is no other way except this..." Hel looked off into the distance with a contented smile. "You have my sincere gratitude, Seph. I have genuinely enjoyed the one million years since I first met you. It was the first time I had lived with someone else and the first time I had met someone since I was sealed here. Every second I have spent with you and every word we have exchanged has brought me immense joy."

"However, it was also true that you are merely a tool that I use to break free from this never-ending cycle. In this lonely place, there was no one I could really trust. Don't put me down, please."

A black rod developed from the dark aura that gathered within Seph's sweating hands. It appeared to have no form at all, no handle, and nothing else.

Hel chuckled and grinned elegantly. "My personal weapon is this. Take good care of it.

His hands shook and Seph's lips shivered as he gazed at her.

"I... I-I... can't..."

"Yes, you can," Hel said, laughing and coming over to him.

As he raised the blade, Seph's hand moved on its own.

"Wha... What is going on...I don't want to..."

After saying, "I knew something like that would happen so I left a safety measure in place for that moment," Hel allowed the blade to pierce her flesh and emerge out her back, impaling her chest.

As she grinned and stroked Seph's cheek, her blood spurted out and fell onto his face.

"I apologize, but please enjoy your life and, if at all possible, let it go like a horrible dream! Please pardon me; I can't murder myself on my own."

Hel gave him a slow embrace, said something, and then smiled slightly.

"You're too cruel..." As he watched her eyes go dead and her body break down into pieces, Seph muttered and bit his bottom lip till it bled.

"...NOOOO!!" Seph's agonized voice reverberated into the distance as he let out a loud scream into that empty world.

The cage constructed for the Primordial Existence disappeared because the one it was intended to seal had gone... forever, and the sky shattered and the dark chains broke apart as well.
