Chapter 18: 18. A blessing and a curse
As Diana led Pearl out, many eyes followed them, including those of Evelyn who still hadn't forgotten the face of the child who nearly caused another fallout with her daughter. And then there was Anna, whose emotional eyes alternated between Pearl and Diana.
"How long has it been?" Anna muttered under her breath. It was almost six years now since she last saw Diana. But the woman didn't see to change one bit. Seeing her with Pearl, she was glad that at least someone familiar was beside her daughter. And she could approach Diana.
"Did you say something?" Willow asked, but Anna shook her head. "Oh… I am sorry ma'am," she apologized. Her eyes also roamed around and stopped on the couple. "The wedding g is overs now I suppose."
"Yes, it is," Anna said with a nod of her head. But then, a voice that she never expected came from beside her and caused her to frown.
"I never thought I'll see you here today, Miss Henshaw."
Anna turned, and her frown deepened. When did he get there, and for how long had he been standing beside her unnoticed?
"Are you that disappointed to see me?" He asked.
Anna took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "I am sorry I didn't notice you were there, Young Master Dillon," Anna said with a strained smile. She wondered how come she didn't notice him while he did her.
"Don't worry, I just got the person beside you to switch places with me. That's all," Heath said with a smile that had Anna rolling her eyes at him while Willow glared. "It seems I am not welcomed here?"
"That's not it. It's just, you being here means that I didn't hide myself as much as I thought I did," Anna said, her eyes looking where Evelyn was ans she could not be seen anymore and her skipped a beat. "Excuse me, Master Dillon. Willow and I have to go." She said while taking Willow's hand.
Heath held her other hand, and she frowned and nearly pulled away. "Relax, Anna. Mrs Henshaw didn't see me come here, and I doubt she has seen you either. If she does, then that's solely on me," he said, but her frown didn't ease. He sighed. "I give you my word."
"All right," Anna said, and her heart started calming down.
"If you are worried about her, we could just sneak out and head to get some food she wouldn't know because she won't expect you to go there by yourself. She'll never be able to catch up," he suggested.
"Carl is here with others looking for me. Even if I don't bump into Mother, I'll bump into one of them. I am not ready to take that risk just yet. But I'll take you on the food offer," she said as she looked at where Diana had taken Pearl. "Come now. Let's hurry before they are gone."
Willow understood what she meant, but Heath was lost. Before, who was gone? he asked in his head. Although at lost, he still followed the two women, his curiosity piqued.
As they walked, two pairs of eyes followed them, both furrowed but for different reasons. The pairs of eyes zeroed in on the joined hands of Anna and Heath, and their frowns deepened.
"Did you know she was here?" Ezekiel asked, his eyes still on Anna's form. He was not pleased to see her. Although her presence here was no surprise. They had exepected her ever since their encounter with Evelyn.
"It doesn't matter anymore," Lloyd replied. But his jaws worked, and his fists clenched by his sides. His heart squeezed inside him to tye pint he almost found it hard to breathe. After all that drama and crying before as if she had been regretting their separation. Now he sees her with another man.
"What do you mean it doesn't matter? Ezekiel asked. Lloyd's expression and aura spoke the exact opposite of the words his mouth uttered. Anna still affected him and ways that they didn't like.
Lloyd looked at him and then shrugged nonchalantly, now able to get a hide of his emotions. "She seems happy with him. Perhaps her mother even approves of him. What does her presence here have to do with me?" He walked away after saying that.
It didn't matter. He could not allow himself to be bothered by the sight of her with another man. They had long been sepreated and he too had moved on. It was only wise that she should too. Lloyd keeps telling himself. But even he knew that was a lie. He never moved on.
Ezekiel watched him go and shook his head. Lloyd could be a good liar, but right now, anyone could tell that was a fat lie.
"You still love her, don't you?" Ezekiel muttered under his breath. Right now, he could no longer decide whether to hate that woman or not, but he did pity his friend.
Love was indeed a blessing and a curse.
Ezekeil doubted that even he too would be able to let go if he was in Lloyd's shoes. He didn't even want to imagine it. Could he stand seeing Diana with another man? No. Could he stay still and sane if she was gone that long? Hell No. He literally followed her abroad when she left to study and stayed there with her for five years.
Speaking of Diana…
He looked at the direction Lloyd had gone and realized that Pearl and Diana had gone there to.
"This is going to be awkward," he said and walked in that same direction too.
Meanwhile, Pearl and Diana moved from one pastry to another not caring who was watching and who wasn't. Even if they wanted to reprimand the child for eating too much, there was Diana. A grown woman with her and she was permitting it and knowing who she was, no one dared to approached the duo.
"Isn't she worried about a tooth ache?" Heath asked when he saw them like but Anna only smiled.
"She still hasn't changed at all," Anna said and walked forward.
"Diana," she called and Diana paused. She first looked at Pearl who also looked at her confused since the voice was also familiar to her.
Slowly, they both turned. While Pearl looked happy to see that auntie again, Diana was shocked and Heath shared in her shock as his eyes landed on the little one.
