The Heiress: Getting My Ex-Husband Back

Chapter 17: 17. A child's instincts

Evelyn looked at Silas aquarely, but his gaze remained forward, a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips knowingly. Evelyn frowned. Why did his words remind her so much of Anna?

"It is still our responsibility to guide them. If we let them lose, they might just make mistakes that they'll regret for the rest of their lives, and we can not allow that. I will not allow that," Evelyn said, but Silas chuckled without saying a word.

He met her gaze briefly before he returned to the bride, who now stood by her groom. Soon, they all sat down, and the silence between them stretched while the priest took charge at the event.

As the main event began, none spoke, but they were well aware that their conversation was not at all finished.

The wedding and soon the exchange of vows was completed and rings exchanged. On the other side, Anna could help but wonder how hers would have been had she not left before the wedding. She had always known that leaving everything behind was a mistake. Her biggest mistake. But seeing this now, everything coming together now made her realize how weak she was back then.

Her eyes searched the crowd and immediately locked on him as if he were the only one present. He stood there, leaning against the wall at a corner just beside the middle row. His hands were casually tucked inside his pockets, but he still exuded the charm that could draw everyone's eyes to him.

Maybe it was just her who felt that way, but she didn't mind.

"If things work, it'll be you standing there soon," Willow said, knowing who held her boss's eyes and attention.

"I would have been standing there five years ago, Willow. I lost that opportunity. Although it's something that I hope for, it'll be a miracle if that happens soon," Anna said with a sad smile on her lips. It was painful seeing how everything had turned out, but she was back now. Not only will she get her daughter back, but she will also win over her man.

This time, she was prepared to be the one doing the chasing. Lloyd had done his part before, and he succeeded in getting her. It was her turn now. She was certain that just as he was able to get her attention and affection away from all other men back then. She would be able to get his attention from all other women. They've been together before. They can still do it again.

Meanwhile, Willow blinked, unable to believe that her boss had once been engaged. Wasn't the Madam a bit too strict and heartless to have separated a family like that? And now, she was looking for a potential husband for her daughter when Anna herself never had difficulty finding a husband before.

"Then it should be a lot easier, right?" She asked hopefully to see her boss smile again. Her boss had shown a lot more emotions these past few weeks that they had been at Empire City than she has in over five years that she has known her. Willow didn't want that to cease again. She liked her expressive boss.

"I wish it would be," Anna said, but she knew that was only wishful thinking. She knew that she had left a deep cut in his heart, their hearts that she would have to tend to, and help them heal before anything could go back to how it used to be. How she wants it to be.

"It is good to maintain a possible attitude, ma'am," Willow gave her an encouraging smile.

"I am positive he will do everything he can to avoid me and keep Julia from me. Vivian would too," she said, and the smile on Willow's face fell.

"That wasn't what I meant. I meant that you should be positive about winning them back. You did that once, remember?" Willow said, but Anna smiled.

"They were the ones who won me then, not the other way around. Now, the roles are reversed." Hearing that, Willow looked ahead again and nodded her head in understanding.

"I trust that you can. I am here to help however I can. However, you need me," Willow said, and Anna smiled gratefully.

"Thank you," Anna said just before the audience stood up and applauded as the couple kissed to seal their matrimonial vows, and the priest declared them man and wife.

At the front row, Pearl stood and clapped along with everyone although barely aware of what was truly happening. Beside her was Genevieve who wore a smile as she clapped. She would occasionally look at Pearl and her brows would pull together and when their eyes met, she would smile.

"Is something wrong, Auntie Gen?" Pearl asked. She had noticed the way the woman looked at her and knew something wasn't quite right.

"Everything is fine," Genevieve replied, hervouce low so that she didn't garner attention from those seated close to them. Auntie is just a bit exhausted." She lied.

Pearl went silent for a moment before she nodded and turned to look at her other side with Diana standing there. Unlike Genevieve, Diana was truly elated and she didn't feel any awkward gaze from Diana even when their eyes met. Instinctively, she moved closer to Diana. Genevieve noticed this and frowned but didn't utter a word.

She tugged on Diana's dress a little to get her attention and Diana stopped clapping and looked at her.

"What's the matter, Pearl?" Diana asked. But Pearl shook her head. She just wanted to see what kind of expression Diana would have. Sitting down, Diana made her sit too. "Are you tired? Or hungry? Would you like anything? I can go and get it for you." Diana asked.

Pearl stared at her hands for a while before she nodded her little head. She didn't like the way Auntie Gen looked at her and she wanted to be away from her.

"All right. Come on, let's go get you something to eat. I heard that the best dessert chefs are here. I can't wait to try out the desserts," Diana said smiling and Pearl did the same too. "You'll eat desserts too right?"

"Yes," Pearl jumped to her feet and took hold of Diana's hand. What child didn't like desserts?

Genevieve saw them and wanted to say she'll join them but hesitated knowing Pearl must be avoiding her. In the end, she sat down, once again alone.
