Chapter 14: Valley of Predators: Shattered Illusions
Arin stumbled through the dense underbrush of the Valley of Predators, sweat dripping into his eyes as the guttural roars of the beast behind him echoed ominously.
The moonlight filtered through the twisted, gnarled trees, casting eerie shadows that danced as if mocking his misfortune. Every breath was a ragged gasp as the beast closed the gap, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground.
The System chimed in, its voice carrying an infuriating mix of amusement and indifference:
[Welcome to your first simulation. Survive or die, Host. The choice is yours.]
"Great advice!" Arin snarled, leaping over a fallen log only to crash to the ground on the other side. His ankle twisted painfully as he rolled onto his back, gasping for air.
The monstrous predator emerged into view—a towering, reptilian beast with scales shimmering like molten lava and eyes glowing a furious crimson. It snarled, its dagger-like teeth gleaming in the faint light as drool dripped onto the ground, sizzling against the dirt.
[You might want to move, Host.]
"No kidding!" Arin scrambled backward, panic surging as the beast lunged. He managed to throw himself to the side just in time, the creature's claws carving deep trenches into the ground where he had been lying moments before.
The reptile beast roared in frustration, turning toward Arin, who was too slow to rise. Its breath was hot and rancid, washing over him as it prepared to strike.
Arin clenched his fists, whispering, "Not like this… Please, not like this…"
"System…System, save me…."
"Give me power to fight"
Arin roaring is his mind to call for help from his system but
[Sorry Host]
[You don't have the minimum requirement to activate the gift package]
The system replied in cold tone.
…
However
Before the beast could pounce, a deafening roar broke through the chaos, shaking the air.
A massive figure hurtled into view, slamming into the creature with enough force to send it sprawling.
Arin's also send backward hitting nearby tree due to shockwave. He struggles to get up and see who has come to save him, but he can't see clearly due to how weak he is now.
All he can vaguely see that someone tall has come, he fantasize that maybe a tall beauty has come to save him.
He laughs in his mind and thinks that haven has not forgotten me, sending my future harem member to me.
…
Sadly for him
…
Arin's savior stood tall—easily seven feet of raw, primal muscle. His bare chest was marked with battle scars, and his long, dark hair flowed like a mane. He wielded a crude yet powerful club, swinging it with precision and fury.
The beast roared again, lunging at the man. But the stranger was faster. He ducked beneath its swipe, delivering a devastating blow to its jaw that cracked like thunder.
The fight raged on, but Arin's vision blurred as exhaustion and his injuries overwhelmed him. The last thing he saw before blacking out was the towering figure standing victorious over the fallen beast.
In the afternoon…
In a Hut, Arin lay down and his body bandaged.
After what seems to eternity…
Arin slowly Woking up
Arin tried to open his eyes to the faint smell of herbs and wood smoke. His body ached, and his head throbbed as he opened his eyes to find himself in a dimly lit hut.
The walls were made of rough-hewn logs, and strange symbols adorned the beams, glowing faintly with some sort of primitive enchantment.
He tried to sit up but winced as pain lanced through his torso. Bandages wrapped tightly around his chest and arms, crudely applied but effective.
"Where… am I?" he murmured. Memories flooded back—the beast, the chase, and… someone saving him.
"A woman…" he whispered to himself, his lips curling into a smile.
"I am sure, It must have been her. She carried me here. My first harem member." He chuckled weakly, imagining her face, her strength, and her devotion. "What a story this will make."
A deep cough shattered his daydreams. Arin looked toward the doorway, and his heart dropped like a stone.
The man who had fought the beast stepped into the room, carrying a steaming bowl of soup. His broad shoulders filled the frame, and his piercing blue eyes locked onto Arin.
He walked with the confidence of a predator, but his expression was warm, even gentle.
"Ah, you're awake," the man said, his deep voice resonating in the small room. "Good. You've been out for a while."
Arin blinked, his fantasies dissolving into bitter reality. "Wait… where's the girl? The one who saved me?"
The man tilted his head, clearly amused. "Girl? No girl saved you. It was me." He placed the bowl on a small wooden table beside the bed, his calloused hands lingering on the rim. "You're lucky I was nearby. That beast would have torn you apart."
Arin's face turned crimson as he processed the truth. "Y-you? But I thought…" He trailed off, shaking his head. "Never mind."
Karo, the hulking savior, watched Arin's flustered reaction with an unspoken fascination.
The young man's delicate features stood out even in the dim light—the way his lips moved when he spoke, the subtle curve of his cheekbones, and the way his eyes sparkled with unspoken thoughts.
He's… beautiful, Karo thought, a strange warmth spreading through his chest. He quickly pushed the thought aside, focusing on the task at hand.
"You need to eat," Karo said, gently nudging the bowl closer. "It'll help you recover."
Arin stared at the bowl, reluctant to meet Karo's gaze. "Thanks. I guess."
"You're safe here," Karo continued, pulling a stool closer to sit beside the bed. "This is my village. We don't get many outsiders, especially not ones chased by beasts like that."
Arin hesitated. "Where is this… valley? And how long was I out?"
Karo leaned back, his gaze thoughtful. "The Valley of Predators. You've been unconscious for a day."
As Karo left to fetch more supplies, the System's voice chimed in, its tone dripping with amusement:
[Oh, Host. Your disappointment was delicious. I could watch that scene on repeat.]
"Shut up," Arin muttered, shoving the blanket aside.
[But don't worry, Host. This is just the beginning. The Valley of Predators has much more in store for you—and so do I.]
Arin groaned, burying his face in his hands. He couldn't decide what was worse—the System's taunts, the crushing realization of who had saved him, or the lingering thought that his savior might not be as simple as he seemed as he was checking him up like a hunter.
