Chapter 15: Someone’s Misfortune, Another’s Paradise
Arin sat outside Karo's hut, gazing at the villagers sparring in the distance. Every move they made seemed to ripple with raw energy, the air itself vibrating with an unspoken connection between them.
He shuddered as he recalled Karo's earlier words:
"Strength isn't born alone. Bonds fuel us. A single soul burns bright, but a pair ignites the stars."
It wasn't the words themselves but the way Karo's deep blue eyes had lingered on him, warm and steady, as though sizing him up.
"What the hell kind of place is this?" Arin muttered under his breath.
His thoughts were interrupted by the System's familiar, smug tone:
[Enjoying the view, Host? Or shall I say… scoping out potential partners?]
"Shut it!" Arin snapped. "There has to be a way out of here. These guys are all…" He hesitated, realizing what he was about to admit. "Well, guys."
[Astute observation, Host. This world lacks women. You're in a world built entirely on male bonding. Emotionally. Physically. Intimately.]
Arin's face flushed. "You're saying they…"
[Yes. And don't pretend you haven't noticed the attention.]
He scowled, muttering to himself. "So what do I do? Sit here and let them make the first move?"
The System chuckled darkly.
[Not a bad idea, but if you're done sulking, I've got your first Novice Task. Complete it, and I might finally hand over that gift pack you're so desperate for.]
"Finally! What's the task?"
The System's voice took on a sinister glee:
[Get into a relationship, Host. Learn everything about bonding in this world. Bonus points for cherry-popping.]
Arin froze. "Cherry-popping? You're joking, right?"
[Not at all. The rewards are substantial. Fail, and, well… this village isn't the kind of place where lone wolves survive for long.]
As Arin processed the impossible task, Karo approached, his muscular form casting a long shadow.
"You seem troubled," Karo said, sitting beside him. His voice was soft, kind. "This world can be overwhelming for newcomers."
Arin forced a smile, trying to hide his growing panic. "You could say that."
Karo studied him for a moment. "The village council has noticed you. They've decided you'll face a bond trial tomorrow."
"What's a bond trial?" Arin asked cautiously.
Karo's lips twitched into a small smile. "It's a test of trust and connection. Don't worry—I'll be your partner."
The implication made Arin's stomach churn, but before he could argue, Karo stood and left, his expression unreadable.
[Well, Host,] the System purred. [Looks like destiny's calling. Don't screw this up.]
On the other side of the multiverse
…
Kal-El also Known as Superman descended into the lush, vibrant sanctuary of Poison Ivy's secret garden, a hidden paradise where emerald leaves danced with fantastical colors not found in nature.
The very atmosphere seemed to pulse with life, filled with the delicate susurrations of flora perfectly attuned to one another.
Though Superman had always found Ivy's realm to have an almost alien beauty, today the sweet perfume of exotic blossoms mingled with a sense of something amiss, drawing him deeper into her world.
He knew they were here—Ivy, Selina, and Herley. For weeks now, they'd been meeting in secret, and he couldn't ignore the faint tremors of multiverse-level activity surrounding them.
As he landed, the ground beneath his boots softened, roots subtly coiling around the edges of his cape as if to greet him.
...
Superman folded his arms, letting out a soft chuckle as he stepped into Ivy's lush garden. "You all really thought you could sneak around without me noticing? We're far past games like that."
Ivy emerged from a wall of twisting vines, her emerald eyes gleaming with amusement. A towering orchid unfurled behind her, framing her figure in a halo of deep reds and purples.
"Oh, Kal, relax. Sneaking is such a harsh word. Think of it as… a little creative privacy."
"Creative privacy?" Superman's voice carried an amused edge. "That's what you're calling the dimensional disruptions I've been tracking for weeks? You knew I'd come."
"You're predictable like that," Ivy teased, stepping closer. She let her fingers brush the petals of a glowing flower, which flared brighter under her touch. "And you've missed us, haven't you?"
Before he could answer, a burst of delighted laughter rang out, and Harley Quinn appeared, swinging down from a tree branch with acrobatic flair.
Her blonde pigtails bounced as she landed in front of him, spinning a red and black mallet playfully. "Big Golden finally shows up! What took ya so long? We were startin' to think you forgot about us!"
Superman sighed, though the corners of his lips twitched upward. "Forget about you? Harley, you'd probably drag me back by the cape if I tried."
"You bet your sweet boots I would," Harley said with a wink, tossing her mallet over her shoulder as she sauntered toward him.
"Ivy," came Selina Kyle's voice as she stepped out of the shadows, her signature grace and cool confidence on full display. "How long were you going to let him think he was in control?" Her golden eyes sparkled with amusement as she joined Ivy and Harley, forming a triangle around him.
"Selina," Superman said warmly. "Nice to see you're still enjoying the shadows. What's going on here?"
"Oh, come now, Kal," Ivy said, a sly smile curling her lips. "You've been keeping secrets. We've just been catching up. Sharing notes."
Harley chimed in, leaning on her mallet. "'Bout the multiverse stuff, you know. All that big guy, bigger responsibility talk you're always spoutin'. You're plannin' somethin' juicy, aren't ya?"
Superman raised an eyebrow, glancing between them. "You already know about the cultivation multiverse. I told you and others about it sometimes ago."
