Chapter 164

164. After Defeat, Becoming A Disciple

“Wake up already. How long do you plan on sleeping?”

When I regained consciousness, I found myself in Mila’s room. It seemed I had been knocked out by that last hand chop. I got up from lying face-down on the floor.

In the room, Mila and Raize were watching me. Judging by what happened, Raize must have been knocked out too. It seems I was the last to come to.

“Finally awake, huh? So, how do you feel about it?”

“My head’s still a little foggy, but… well, I realized I’m far from reaching you.”

“That’s the right conclusion. That’s the difference in skill between us.”

I wanted to know the distance between Mila and me. I’d even thought I might at least put up a bit of a fight. So the fact that I couldn’t even touch her hit me hard. Frustrated, I clenched my fists.

Raize, who had been watching me from beside Mila, raised her hand.

“I have a question—Is the really a skill that can make anything come true? I’ve never heard of such a skill.”

“Making anything come true is a bit of an exaggeration. It’s only within the range of what I can imagine. But to imagine something, you have to understand the logic behind it.”

Mila created a flame in her palm. Flickering and giving off heat, it was unmistakably fire.

“For example, to produce flames like this, I need to understand how fire originates and how to shape it. It takes much longer than learning regular magic, and the mana cost is much higher.”

“So, does that mean that, even though I have , I can’t use five-element magic?”

“That’s almost impossible. For me, I can use additional elements because of my skill. But for you, without the skill—and without fully understanding magic’s logic—it’s out of the question.”

With her hopes dashed, Raize visibly slumped, her face darkening. Raize hates losing. She was trying to accept the truth, but couldn’t fully come to terms with it.

“That said, you’re both still young, and you have room to grow. So, don’t be discouraged—”

“Do you think we have room to grow?”

“What’s with the sudden question? Well, yes. With that strength at your age, there’s still plenty of—”

“Then, would you take us on as your disciples?”

Before I knew it, I’d blurted out something crazy. I was shocked at my own words, yet somehow, it felt like the right thing to say.

I can’t ever win against this person. Precisely because of that, I felt I needed to absorb something from her to become stronger.

Mila didn’t seem rattled at all by my sudden request; she simply said,

“No.”

A blunt response. Mila, who had carried an easygoing vibe until now, looked serious for a moment.

“I don’t take on disciples. Look somewhere else.”

“But, I want to ask you because it’s you, Mila! Don’t you know exactly what we’re lacking?”

“No means no. I don’t like troublesome things like that.”

“Then, why did you give us hints when we were attacked by monsters?”

Mila’s attitude and words don’t match up. Back when we were first attacked by monsters, she could have wiped them all out with a single strike.

It was the same in our fight just now. With her power, she could’ve ended it by teleporting right away.

She clearly wants to teach us hints to become stronger, yet she’s adamant about not taking us on as disciples.

“… It was just a whim. I’ve said it over and over; I won’t take you as disciples.”

With that, Mila reached for the door to leave the room. She seemed firm in her decision.

“You’re both worn out today. I won’t take you as disciples, but you can stay here tonight.”

With those parting words, Mila closed the door and went off somewhere.
