Chapter 43: Volume 1 Chapter 43: Garde: I Hate Fighting and Killing the Most
"Saria, you actually didn't need to come with me."
"This isn't just your problem. I'm not here as Saria, the Head of the Defense Department of Rhine Lab, but as a Vouivre martial artist. I can't let you do everything on your own."
In the secret underground passage of Blackrock Town, a crocodile man wearing a helmet, draped in a red cape, and holding a large machete crouched on the ground.
Beside him stood a Vouivre female martial artist dressed in a black coarse linen cloak, wearing a protective mask, and with white silk wrapped around her hands.
Around them, several mercenaries gathered in small groups, whispering as they observed their attire.
"Who are these two? They look pretty strong."
"I heard they're hired thugs from the black market in Reefsteep."
"Tsk, did the Reefsteep black market change owners again? I wonder how long this one will last."
Blackrock Town, located in the southwestern part of the Ibut region, was a small town where the Ibut Warlord had limited influence due to its proximity to the south. The town was filled with mercenaries hiding out after committing crimes.
Garde and Saria were brought here by Eliot, and naturally bore his mark.
A Lupus mercenary approached, patting Garde's back in a friendly manner: "Hey, Adakrys big guy, why don't you talk to your master and join our Iron Sand Mercenary Group instead?"
"Black Mamba's confidant is offering twenty ingots of Originium for The Sand Soldier's head. If the Sand Soldier is willing to trade the control of the Reefsteep black market for his life, I'd be happy to let him go."
While the Lupus mercenary spoke, a group of Iron Sand mercenaries surrounded Garde and Saria.
More mercenaries stood at a distance, eager to watch the show.
Garde scratched his head and gave Saria a troubled look: "You see, it's not that I want to cause trouble. The mercenaries here are just like this, always fighting and killing. If we don't show some of our strength, there might be more trouble ahead."
"I understand."
Saria calmly looked at the Lupus mercenary behind Garde, wondering where he got the courage to pat Garde's shoulder. Didn't he see that Garde was much taller and broader than him?
"I checked the records before we came. The Iron Sand Mercenary Group is a second-rate mercenary group in the Ibut region, often involved in murder, arson, and human trafficking. They deserve to be erased."
"Ah, hearing that makes me feel better."
Garde grinned, showing a fierce smile. As the Lupus mercenary looked at him in shock, Garde grabbed his shoulder and lifted him in one hand like a chick.
"After all, I hate fighting and killing unnecessarily the most. If there's a good reason for it, I'm more than happy to do some good deeds."
"What are you doing?"
The Lupus mercenary panicked as Garde's grip felt like an iron clamp. He mustered his courage and shouted, "Look around you, you're surrounded by our people."
About twenty Iron Sand mercenaries surrounded Garde and Saria, armed with various weapons. They seemed ready to attack if Garde made a move, determined to show whose territory Blackrock Town was.
But did Garde and Saria care?
Not at all. Garde alone, or even just Saria, could easily wipe out the entire Iron Sand Mercenary Group.
Seeing no way to resolve the situation peacefully, a mercenary in the crowd shouted, "Deputy leader Mackie is down! Let's kill these two and avenge him!"
The emphasized words "deputy leader" stirred the surrounding mercenaries into action.
The Lupus mercenary in Garde's grip widened his eyes: "Coffit, you *****!"
Spewing vulgar Sargon curses, the Lupus mercenary watched as the others ignored him and raised their weapons, firing arrows without hesitation.
"Seems you're not well-liked in your group!"
Garde used the Lupus mercenary as a shield, blocking several arrows. By then, Saria had already charged into the fray.
"Everyone, attack!"
Over twenty mercenaries charged forward while others retreated to avoid getting caught in the fight.
They didn't expect what was supposed to be an evenly matched battle to end with the Iron Sand Mercenary Group being utterly defeated.
Saria moved through the crowd like a tiger among sheep. With a simple calcium coating on her hands, each strike knocked a mercenary unconscious.
Garde's battle, however, was much bloodier.
Using the Lupus mercenary to block arrows, Garde squeezed his shoulder, shattering it. As two mercenaries approached, Garde swung the Lupus mercenary, knocking them away.
In a few rounds, the Lupus mercenary in Garde's grip was barely breathing.
"Guh, kill me if you dare. The Iron Sand Mercenary Group won't let you go..."
With several teeth broken, the Lupus mercenary stammered.
Garde grinned: "Since you insist, I'll oblige."
Garde's hand tightened around the mercenary's neck, snapping it with a twist.
Watching from a distance, the other mercenaries felt a chill.
In Sargon, mercenaries often committed heinous acts and lived with their lives on the line. But few could take a life as casually as Garde.
Saria's fists were also blood-stained, though it wasn't her own.
She wasn't some delicate flower. The more ruthless they were now, the less likely others would dare to provoke them later.
Though, she's not as ruthless as Garde, since she has yet to kill any.
Just then, Eliot appeared from nowhere, looking at the two of them.
"Let's go."
For the mercenary lying on the ground, there wasn't a hint of emotion in his heart.
In this land, the most valuable thing is life, and the least valuable thing is also life.
In the distance, a girl with a pair of curved horns on her head clicked her tongue as she watched Garde's swift actions.
"Tsk, I must have been crazy to mess with this guy before. Gentle personality, my foot! What a lie!"
