Chapter 42: Volume 1 Chapter 42: The Deal
The last time Garde saw Elliot was four years ago.
At that time, Elliot had gotten involved in some trouble, and Garde had saved him in passing.
Initially, Garde didn't reveal that he knew Elliot. He followed behind the group from Rhine Lab, wanting to see what Elliot wanted from him.
Could it be that Elliot, seeing the discord between Ibut Lord Ameer and Rhine Lab, wanted to use Rhine Lab's as a knife to get rid of Ibut Lord Ameer?
Garde thought this was possible.
Although not so blatant, Garde believed that if Elliot had found a chance to wound the Ibut Lord Ameer, he would not hesitate to take it.
This was because his teacher had died in a conspiracy designed by Ibut Lord Ameer. He held a grudge against Ibut Lord Ameer and wouldn't miss any opportunity to kill him.
In the reception room, Garde met Elliot, a young Liberi who probably wasn't yet thirty.
Among the various races in Terra, the Liberi's physical constitution wasn't particularly outstanding, and the same was true for this Liberi male. Even though he had climbed up from an ordinary laborer, his physical strength was only marginally better than the average person.
However, Elliot is not a normal person, he's an Infected, a Caster, and also a mechanic.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to stand out in the chaos and become a black market master of the surrounding region.
In fact, Garde had told Saria that the black market master in Ibut region was Elliot. When Garde left the Ibut region, Elliot was just an insignificant intelligence dealer among many in the black market.
But Garde believed that he would eventually become the black market master.
Now it seemed, Elliot hadn't disappointed him.
When Garde looked at Elliot, Elliot's gaze also swept over.
However, unlike Garde's blatant stare, Elliot's gaze was much more subtle.
Garde's casual attitude was due to his strength, and as an intelligence dealer, stepping into the enemy's safe house was inherently very risky.
But Garde's appearance made Elliot completely relax. In his twenty-plus years of life, there were only two people he couldn't understand.
One was the woman who had saved him when he was young, Kal'tsit.
The other was the crocodile man in front of him, Garde.
Both were his saviors, but they followed completely different styles.
The woman who had saved him seemed to know everything. Whether friend or foe, she habitually calculated everything.
The crocodile man in front of him was entirely different.
He seemed like the embodiment of violence, capable of crushing any plot or scheme with sheer brute force.
They were fundamentally different, yet shared common traits.
The woman named Kal'tsit was very smart but didn't reject the use of force.
The creatures she summoned could easily destroy a mercenary group.
Garde was violent, but that didn't mean he didn't think.
He was just better at using brute force to simplify complex situations.
Both were entities Elliot couldn't understand.
Similarly, when they stood by his side, as companions, they brought an unparalleled sense of security.
Provided they truly regarded you as a companion.
"Mr. Sand Soldier?"
"....I know you, one of the founders of Rhine Lab, Miss Saria."
Since he knew Garde was here, Elliot had no concerns left.
Because he knew that if he got captured, as long as Garde wanted to, he could even single-handedly slaughter through Ibut Lord Ameer's guards at will, save him, kill Ibut Lord Ameer, and then throw the Lord Ameer corpse into the wilderness.
"I am here to make a deal with you."
"Please go ahead."
Elliot glanced at the people around Saria and said, "I hope as few people as possible know about this matter."
Saria thought for a moment and looked at Muelsyse and the others.
"You all leave first."
"Director Saria?"
"The options left to us are already very limited."
The Pero deputy captain and Parvis, Director of R.L. Structural Section who had never shown much presence, were the first to leave. Muelsyse saw Garde behind Saria, crossed his arms and snorted coldly, "What are you still standing here for? I told you to go out."
Garde glanced at Muelsyse's chest. He had to admit, compared to her clone, the difference was significant.
This glance nearly made Muelsyse explode.
"Damn crocodile man, what kind of look is that?"
"Nothing."
Garde turned his head away; she was too flat, not his type.
However, Garde did not move because Elliot quickly added, "I hope Mr. Garde can stay and hear my terms as well."
When Elliot said this, Muelsyse immediately understood.
"You two know each other?"
"Not telling you."
Garde's attitude infuriated Muelsyse.
"Fine, don't tell me."
Hmph, I'll find out sooner or later anyway.
Wait, why do I care about his business?
"Saria."
Before leaving, Muelsyse called out to Saria.
"Control asked me to tell you that even if we can't find the inhibitor, she will figure something out."
"Yes, please tell her I said thanks for her concern."
Saria nodded, clearly not taking Muelsyse's words to heart.
Then, Muelsyse left the reception room. She was actually opposed to Saria entering the Hotland because the risk was too high. She didn't trust that damn crocodile man to bring Saria back safely.
As she exited, she saw Parvis, the Director of R.L. Structural Section, talking with Deputy Captain Orba.
"Director Parvis, Captain Orba, what are you discussing?"
"Oh, Director Muelsyse."
Parvis showed a kindly smile.
"I wanted to ask Captain Orba to help me send some items back. I collected some interesting samples in Acahualla and worry they might get damaged if left in the container too long."
"I see."
Muelsyse tilted her head.
"Maybe you should go back with them, Director Parvis. You're not suited for combat anyway. Honestly, I was surprised when you applied to join the team."
"Hehe, no doctor can resist the lure of a cure for Oripathy, not even me."
Parvis's wrinkled face broke into a smile.
"But I'm getting old, I have to admit that."
"Mind if I see what samples you collected? As the Director of the Ecological Department, I'm very interested in those kinds of things."
"Hehe, let's wait until we return. The samples are buried deep in the container, and it's inconvenient to take them out."
"Alright then."
Muelsyse shrugged but kept a mental note.
'I should ask Saria about what they encountered in Acahualla. Anything that pique the interest of Parvis must be extraordinary.'
After Muelsyse and the others left, only Saria, Garde, and Elliot remained in the reception room.
Glancing at Garde, Saria turned to Elliot and said, "You can state your terms now. We will consider them."
Elliot nodded and said:
"I want you to assist us in fighting against Ibut Lord Ameer's secret guards. They are hunting down the underground black market leaders."
"That's impossible!"
Saria refused without a second thought.
"We can't directly oppose a Lord Ameer!"
"I know."
Elliot wasn't surprised by Saria's refusal.
"That's why I didn't come to make a deal with you. I came to make a deal with him."
Elliot looked at Garde and raised his head.
"Long time no see, Garde."
"Yes, long time no see, Elliot."
Garde smiled.
