System Creator of Divine Objects

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Rifts of the Abyss

The streets outside the Grand Library felt colder as Max and Clara emerged from the ruins. The sun hung low on the horizon, casting long shadows over the city. The Key of Eons rested securely in Max's satchel, its faint hum barely audible over the ambient noise of the waking world.

"That's one ancient relic down," Clara said, exhaling deeply as she slung her bow over her shoulder. "What's next? Do we just stroll into one of these Abyssal Rifts and hope for the best?"

Max glanced at her, his expression serious. "Not quite. We need to figure out where the nearest Rift is. The system said this key opens them, but that doesn't mean I know how to use it."

Clara groaned. "Great. More cryptic magical nonsense."

Max chuckled despite himself. "Let's head back to my place and see if the system can give us any clues."

Back at Max's apartment, the golden interface appeared as he summoned the system. The Key of Eons floated in a holographic display, its intricate design rotating slowly as the system analyzed it.

Analysis Complete:

Artifact: Key of EonsFunction: Unlocks Abyssal Rifts hidden across the world.Activation Requirement: Locate a Rift Anchor—an artifact tied to a specific Rift's location.

New Quest Unlocked:

Echoes of the AbyssObjective: Find the Rift Anchor in Central Square's abandoned cathedral.

Max frowned, his eyes narrowing at the new objective. "A cathedral? That's not exactly where I expected to find something tied to the Abyss."

Clara leaned over to read the display. "It's been abandoned for years. No one goes near it because they say it's cursed."

"Cursed or not, it's our next stop," Max said, standing.

Clara grabbed her gear and sighed. "Of course it is. Lead the way, fearless leader."

The cathedral loomed over the square like a silent sentinel, its gothic spires clawing at the sky. The once-grand structure was now a shell of its former self, its stained glass windows shattered and its doors hanging askew.

Max and Clara approached cautiously, their footsteps echoing on the cracked stone steps.

"Tell me again why we couldn't do this during the day," Clara whispered, her voice laced with sarcasm.

Max grinned. "Because we're on Abyss time now."

The system interface appeared, scanning the area.

Location: Cathedral of Saint Ardan

Danger Level: Medium. Objective: Locate the Rift Anchor.

The heavy doors creaked open, revealing a vast, shadow-filled interior. The faint smell of mildew mixed with the scent of old wood. Pews lay scattered across the floor, and the altar at the far end was shrouded in darkness.

Max activated Divine Insight, his vision sharpening as faint trails of energy became visible. "The anchor's here. I can see traces of its power."

"Good. Let's grab it and get out before something decides we look tasty," Clara muttered, nocking an arrow.

As they moved deeper into the cathedral, the air grew colder. A low hum reverberated through the space, setting their nerves on edge.

"Do you feel that?" Clara asked, her breath visible in the chill.

Max nodded. "Something's here."

The system chimed.

Warning: Abyssal Entity Detected.

Abyssal Warden: Protector of Rift Anchors.Weakness: Holy energy and coordinated attacks.

A deep growl echoed through the cathedral, and a hulking figure emerged from the shadows. The Abyssal Warden was massive, its blackened armor fused with pulsating veins of red energy. Its glowing eyes locked onto Max, and it raised a jagged halberd with a roar that shook the walls.

"Guess it's not going to let us take the anchor," Max said, raising the Divine Blade.

Clara smirked, despite the fear in her eyes. "Wouldn't be fun if it did."

The Warden charged, its halberd slicing through the air with terrifying speed. Max dodged to the side, activating Ethereal Step to avoid the strike. The weapon slammed into the ground, sending cracks spiderwebbing through the stone floor.

Clara fired a volley of arrows, each one aimed at the Warden's exposed joints. The creature roared as the projectiles struck, but its movements remained unimpeded.

"Max, it's too armored!" Clara shouted.

"I see it," Max replied, focusing his energy. The Divine Blade glowed brighter as he prepared to unleash Sunlit Slash.

The golden arc of energy struck the Warden's chest, blasting away part of its armor and exposing the pulsating core beneath.

"There!" Max yelled. "Aim for the core!"

Clara didn't hesitate, her next arrows finding their mark. The Warden roared in pain, swinging its halberd wildly in a desperate attempt to protect itself.

Max seized the opening. He dashed forward, dodging the Warden's strikes with Ethereal Step, and plunged the Divine Blade into its core. The creature let out a final, deafening roar before collapsing into a heap of smoldering armor and shadow.

As the Warden disintegrated, a glowing object floated up from its remains. The Rift Anchor was a small, crystalline orb, its surface etched with swirling patterns that seemed to shift as Max stared at it.

Item Acquired:

Rift Anchor: Allows access to Abyssal Rifts when combined with the Key of Eons.

Clara approached, her bow still ready. "Please tell me we're done here."

Max held up the Rift Anchor, its glow illuminating his face. "We've got what we came for. Now we find the Rift."

The system chimed again.

Quest Update:

Echoes of the Abyss: Activate the Rift Anchor at the designated location to access an Abyssal Rift.

New Location Unlocked:

Forgotten Plaza: The site of the nearest Rift.

Max felt a mix of excitement and dread. They were one step closer to facing the Abyss head-on, but the true battle was only beginning.

"Let's get moving," Max said, leading the way out of the cathedral.

Clara followed, glancing back at the shadows one last time. "I hope you know what you're doing, Max."

Max didn't answer. He wasn't sure if he knew either—but he was determined to find out.
