Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Secrets Beneath
The air inside the Grand Library was heavy with dust and the scent of decayed paper. The once-majestic hall was a shadow of its former glory, its grand shelves of books toppled or covered in cobwebs. The faint light of the rising sun barely penetrated through the cracks in the boarded-up windows.
Max held the Divine Blade tightly, its soft glow illuminating their path. Clara followed close behind, her bow ready and her eyes scanning every corner for danger.
"Why do ancient secrets always have to be hidden in creepy places?" Clara muttered.
Max smirked. "Would you rather it be in a café?"
"At least the coffee would be good," she shot back, though her tension didn't ease.
The system's golden interface appeared, providing guidance.
Location: Ruins Beneath the Grand Library
Objective: Locate the Key of Eons, an artifact linked to the Abyssal Rift.Danger Level: Medium.
Max's eyes scanned the library, searching for anything unusual. His Divine Insight ability highlighted faint traces of energy leading to a staircase partially hidden behind a collapsed shelf.
"Down there," he said, pointing.
Clara sighed. "Of course, it's underground."
The stairs spiraled downward into darkness, the air growing colder with every step. The system's glow cast strange shadows on the walls, revealing carvings of ancient symbols and depictions of battles between towering figures.
"These carvings," Clara said, running her fingers over one. "They look... familiar."
Max stopped to examine them, activating Divine Insight.
Analysis:
Depictions of the War of Creation, a conflict between the Old Gods and the Abyssal Titans.Significance: The Key of Eons was crafted to seal the rift between their realms.
Max's pulse quickened. "This war—these are the same forces that the envoy mentioned. The Abyss was part of this ancient battle."
Clara frowned. "If that's true, why is the Abyss just now reappearing? What woke it up?"
Max didn't have an answer, but the weight of their discovery pressed down on him. The Abyss wasn't just a random enemy; it was part of something much larger.
At the base of the stairs, they entered a vast chamber lined with broken pillars. In the center, a pedestal stood beneath a beam of faint, green light. Resting atop it was a small, intricately carved box.
"That's it," Max said, stepping toward the pedestal.
Clara grabbed his arm. "Wait. This feels too easy."
She wasn't wrong. The silence was deafening, the kind that only existed in places where danger lurked just out of sight.
Max activated Divine Insight again, scanning the area. His heart sank as the system revealed the truth.
Trap Detected:
Guardian of the Key: Abyssal Sentinel.Activation Trigger: Removing the artifact.
"Of course there's a guardian," Max muttered.
Clara readied her bow. "What's the plan?"
Max thought quickly. "We fight. I'll grab the artifact and draw its attention. You hit it from a distance."
Clara nodded. "Let's do it."
Max approached the pedestal, his nerves on edge. As soon as he touched the box, the chamber shook violently. The floor cracked, and a towering figure of black stone and glowing red energy emerged from the shadows.
The Abyssal Sentinel was massive, its form humanoid but unnaturally jagged. Its eyes burned with malice as it turned toward Max.
"You dare disturb the seal?" it rumbled, its voice echoing like thunder.
Max didn't waste time. He activated Ethereal Step to dodge the Sentinel's massive fist as it came crashing down, the impact sending shards of stone flying.
"Clara, now!" he shouted.
Arrows streaked through the air, each one exploding against the Sentinel's body in bursts of fire. The creature roared in pain but didn't falter. It turned toward Clara, its hand raising to unleash a wave of dark energy.
Max acted on instinct. He leaped forward, slashing at the Sentinel's arm with the Divine Blade. The weapon's golden light clashed with the darkness, severing the attack and forcing the Sentinel to stagger back.
Weakness Identified:
Core located in the chest.Strategy: Distract and strike the core.
"Clara, aim for the chest!" Max yelled, dodging another swing.
Clara adjusted her aim, her arrows now targeting the glowing core in the Sentinel's chest. Each shot chipped away at the creature's defenses, exposing the pulsating light within.
Max seized the opportunity. Channeling the system's energy, he unleashed Sunlit Slash, the blade's golden arc slicing through the core.
The Sentinel let out a deafening roar as cracks spread across its body. In a final burst of light, the creature shattered, its remnants dissolving into mist.
With the Sentinel defeated, Max returned to the pedestal and carefully opened the box. Inside was a small, metallic key inscribed with intricate symbols that seemed to shimmer with their own light.
Item Acquired:
Key of Eons: A relic of the Old Gods, capable of opening Abyssal Rifts.
Clara approached, her bow still in hand. "That little thing caused all this trouble?"
Max smiled wryly. "Looks like it."
The system chimed again, displaying a new notification.
Quest Update:
Into the Depths: Artifact acquired. Next step: Locate an Abyssal Rift.
"Another dungeon, I bet," Clara said, sighing.
"Probably," Max replied, tucking the key into his satchel. "But now we have what we need to fight back."
As they climbed the stairs back to the surface, Max couldn't shake the feeling that their journey was only becoming more dangerous. The Abyss knew they were a threat, and it wouldn't stop until they were destroyed.
But Max was ready. Whatever lay ahead, he would face it head-on.
For the first time in years, he felt like he had a purpose. And with the Divine System by his side, he wouldn't stop until the Abyss was defeated.
