Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Forgotten Plaza
The morning sun cast long shadows over the Forgotten Plaza, a desolate expanse of cracked pavement and overgrown weeds. This part of the city had been abandoned for years, ever since the first dungeon gates appeared. Stories of adventurers disappearing near the plaza kept most people far away.
Max and Clara stood at the edge of the plaza, the Key of Eons and the Rift Anchor glowing faintly in Max's hands.
"This is the place," Max said, glancing at the system interface.
Objective: Activate the Rift Anchor to open an Abyssal Rift.
Warning: High probability of Abyssal presence beyond the Rift.
Clara shifted uneasily, her bow at the ready. "So, we're just going to open a doorway to the Abyss in the middle of a cursed plaza? Nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan."
Max smirked, despite the tension. "When you put it that way, it sounds reckless."
"It is reckless," Clara shot back. "But we're already here, so let's get it over with."
Max nodded and stepped into the center of the plaza. He placed the Rift Anchor on the ground, then inserted the Key of Eons into a slot that appeared in the orb's surface.
The system chimed as the artifacts resonated with a low hum.
Activation Successful.
Abyssal Rift Opening in Progress.
The ground trembled, and a swirling vortex of dark energy erupted from the plaza's center. The air grew heavy, the temperature dropping as the Rift solidified. Its jagged edges shimmered with an eerie, otherworldly glow, and a deep, ominous hum echoed from within.
Clara stepped back, her eyes wide. "That... doesn't look inviting."
Max tightened his grip on the Divine Blade. "No turning back now."
The two stepped into the swirling vortex, their surroundings shifting in a blur of dark light. When the world stabilized, they found themselves in a twisted landscape unlike anything they'd seen before.
The ground beneath their feet was blackened and cracked, glowing veins of crimson energy pulsing through it. The sky above was an endless void, dotted with faint, flickering lights that seemed to move as if alive.
"Welcome to the Abyss," Clara whispered, her voice tinged with awe and fear.
Max's system interface appeared, displaying critical information.
Location: Abyssal Rift - Tier 1
Danger Level: High. Objective: Reach the Rift Core and destroy it.
Warning: Rift stability decreases over time. Escape before collapse.
"We've got a timer," Max said grimly.
"How long?" Clara asked, already scanning their surroundings.
"Doesn't say," Max replied. "But I'm guessing we'll know when it starts falling apart."
A low growl interrupted their conversation, and both turned to see several shadowy figures emerging from the cracks in the ground.
Hostiles Detected:
Abyssal Shades (x6): Fast, pack hunters. Weakness: Light-based attacks.
"Here we go," Max said, raising the Divine Blade.
Clara nocked an arrow. "Let's take them down fast."
The Abyssal Shades moved with terrifying speed, their black forms darting toward Max and Clara.
Max activated Radiant Flare, the Divine Blade glowing brightly as it unleashed a burst of golden light. The Shades screeched and recoiled, their forms flickering like shadows under a blazing sun.
Clara took advantage of the moment, her arrows striking true and dissipating two of the creatures.
"They don't like light!" she called out.
Max grinned. "Then let's give them more of it."
He channeled energy into the blade, releasing a series of quick slashes that sent arcs of golden light slicing through the remaining Shades. Within moments, the creatures were gone, their forms fading into mist.
"Not so bad," Clara said, lowering her bow.
Max nodded, though his gaze remained fixed on the dark horizon. "That was just the welcoming committee. Let's keep moving."
The landscape grew more chaotic as they pressed forward, the pulsing red veins in the ground intensifying. Strange, distorted structures rose from the ground, their jagged forms twisting unnaturally.
Clara shuddered as they passed a cluster of spires that seemed to watch them. "This place feels alive. Like it's... aware."
Max didn't respond, but he felt it too. The Abyss wasn't just a location—it was a presence, and it was watching them.
Finally, they reached a massive chasm. On the other side, a glowing orb of pure crimson light floated, its energy radiating waves of oppressive power.
"The Rift Core," Max said, his voice heavy.
Clara glanced around. "How do we get across? I don't see a bridge."
Max's system provided the answer.
Option Unlocked:
Create a Pathway: Use energy from the Divine Blade to form a temporary bridge.
"Of course," Max muttered. "Everything depends on this blade."
He stepped to the edge of the chasm and raised the Divine Blade. Concentrating, he channeled its energy into the void. A glowing bridge of golden light began to form, stretching toward the Rift Core.
"Let's go," Max said, stepping onto the bridge.
Clara followed cautiously, her eyes darting to the swirling shadows below. "I really hope this thing holds."
As they reached the Rift Core, the oppressive energy intensified. A deafening roar echoed through the Abyss, and a massive figure emerged from the void.
The guardian was unlike anything they'd faced before—an enormous, winged beast with a body of shifting shadows and burning crimson eyes.
Boss Encounter:
Abyssal Behemoth.Weakness: Core Exposed During Attack.
"Big, ugly, and probably deadly," Clara said, raising her bow. "Just our luck."
Max gripped the Divine Blade tightly. "We take it down, and we take out the Core. Stay close and hit it when you see an opening."
The Behemoth roared again, its wings spreading wide as it charged toward them.
Their hardest battle yet had begun.
