Chapter 31: To You and Me, Are We Friends?
System Question
First Question!
"Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, please answer this question!"
Naruto and Sasuke both looked up at the celestial screen in confusion. Why had it suddenly singled them out?
Under the curious gazes of everyone watching...
"To you, what is the other person?"
Hearing the question, both froze. Sasuke lowered his head, lost in thought.
What... is Naruto to me?
And to Naruto... what am I?
Teammate? Bond? Companion? Or... friend?
Naruto was also silent, his mind swirling with questions. What is Sasuke to me? And what am I to Sasuke?
He had never thought about it this way before. To him, they were just members of Team Seven—comrades.
"Naruto-kun..." Hinata's soft voice broke through the silence, her tone filled with worry. Even Naruto, usually oblivious, could sense her concern.
Shikamaru and the others stayed quiet, letting Naruto contemplate. This was a question only he could answer.
"Naruto, what is Sasuke to you?" Shikamaru finally asked, breaking the stillness.
Naruto flinched, unsure of how to respond.
"He's my comrade..." Naruto began, his voice trailing off as a memory resurfaced:
"To me, you're my closest friend."
The voice of Sasuke from a previous vision echoed in Naruto's mind. His closest friend... Did Sasuke really think that?
"This is something only you can figure out," Shikamaru said. "None of us can answer it for you."
"Naruto-kun, you can do it!" Lee cheered, punctuating his encouragement with a backflip.
"This question is so deep. I understand the words, but the meaning feels out of reach!"
"To you, what am I? That's such a heavy question. Can someone explain it?"
"To me, she's my soulmate, my lifelong bond, someone I'll never regret meeting."
"Whoa, who's confessing in the comment section? Take it somewhere else!"
"Hey, you, what am I to you?"
"You're my best friend, of course!"
"Wait, when did random bystanders show up in this?"
In the dark depths of the Root, Danzo stared at the screen in silence. Memories of Hiruzen flooded his mind.
Hiruzen... what am I to you? he wondered. A rival? A comrade? A shadow?
He reflected deeply. They had been teammates and allies, yet always opposites. Was there something more to their bond?
Hiruzen and Jiraiya were also silent. After a long pause, Jiraiya sighed heavily, his face lined with melancholy.
"To you, what am I?" he muttered, lost in his own thoughts. Perhaps he was recalling old friends, the other Sannin, and their long separation.
Years had passed since the three had stood together, and those memories now felt like a distant dream.
Naruto's mind drifted back to a conversation long ago:
"Do you have someone who's truly important to you?"
At the time, he hadn't understood what Haku meant. Why had Haku asked him such a strange question?
"Someone important..." Naruto placed a hand on his chest, over his heart.
He remembered Iruka's support, Kakashi's guidance, and...
"Why did you save someone like me?"
"Who asked you to interfere, idiot!"
"It wasn't my choice. My body just moved on its own... Don't die on me!"
Naruto's eyes brightened with resolve, a familiar energy returning to him. He shouted confidently toward the screen:
"To me, that stuck-up Sasuke is my best friend!"
Hearing Naruto's declaration, Sasuke's eyes widened slightly.
"Friend...?" he murmured. The word echoed in his mind.
Naruto had called him his best friend. The words stirred something deep within Sasuke—a feeling he had long tried to suppress.
After a pause, Sasuke spoke softly, almost to himself:
"To me, that idiot Naruto is my closest friend... and my comrade."
The celestial screen emitted a soft chime.
Naruto's body tensed for a moment before he broke into a wide smile.
"That guy... That stuck-up Sasuke..." Naruto said, his voice filled with warmth.
The screen darkened momentarily before illuminating with faint light.
A new image appeared: Naruto and Sasuke standing back-to-back. On the left, Sasuke was surrounded by black flames, while Naruto on the right was engulfed in a bright, fiery glow.
The text on the screen read:
"We are friends."
"Whoa! Are we about to see a video of Naruto and Sasuke fighting?"
"This cover looks intense. Why are they the only two shown here?"
"I think it's going to be a showdown between them."
The Rookie Nine stared at the screen, puzzled by the imagery. Only Shikamaru seemed deep in thought, his brows furrowed as he considered what might happen next.
"Do you think Naruto-kun and Sasuke-kun will fight?" Lee asked excitedly, looking at Shikamaru for confirmation.
Shikamaru hesitated before replying. "If I'm right, this isn't just a fight. It's a death match."
"Shikamaru, you're joking, right?" Naruto asked, his voice full of doubt.
"You still don't get it? In the earlier vision, Sasuke clearly said he wanted to kill you," Shikamaru said gravely.
Everyone fell silent, their expressions growing grim.
Hinata's hands clenched tightly, her heart racing with worry for Naruto.
"If my guess is correct," Shikamaru continued, "the Sasuke in those visions isn't the same as the Sasuke standing here today. But in the future... he might truly try to kill you."
Naruto shook his head defiantly. "That's impossible! Sasuke would never do something like that!"
"What if he does?" Shikamaru countered.
Naruto didn't hesitate. "Then I'll stop him!" he declared, his voice steady with conviction.
