Chapter 30: Naruto and Sasuke – To You, What Am I?
That scene... It played over and over in Kakashi's mind. That night, like a recurring nightmare, returned vividly in front of his eyes.
"Ka...kashi..."
A voice echoed from the depths of his memory. There, in his mind, was a girl, staring blankly at him with lifeless eyes as she lay dying.
"Kakashi, you promised to protect Rin," Obito's voice joined in, sharp and accusatory, echoing like thunder in his mind.
Kakashi's pupils contracted. The weight of those memories bore down on him like an avalanche.
"It's my fault... I'm the one who killed Rin," Kakashi whispered, his voice heavy with guilt as he clenched his fists.
"What? Kakashi killed Rin? What's going on here?"
"Didn't he promise Obito to protect her? Why would he do such a thing? There has to be an explanation!"
"Yeah, this doesn't add up. Look at his face in the video—he looks completely shocked and out of it. Could it have been some kind of mind control?"
Naruto was stunned, his blue eyes wide in disbelief as he stared at the celestial screen.
"Kakashi-sensei... killed a comrade?" he muttered, his voice shaking with doubt.
But Naruto shook his head firmly, determination shining in his eyes.
"I don't believe it. There has to be a reason. Kakashi-sensei would never do something like that without a reason!"
Might Guy, tirelessly seeking medical treatment for Lee, paused to glance at the screen. His eyebrows furrowed deeply as he processed what he had just seen.
"Kakashi, how much does that memory still haunt you?" Hiruzen sighed in his office, gazing at the screen.
A new scene emerged on the screen, instantly recognizable to many. Two enormous stone statues loomed over a tranquil lake, standing as eternal sentinels.
Naruto gasped.
"That voice... is that me?"
Beside him, Shikamaru and the rest of the Rookie Nine turned to the screen, their faces reflecting various shades of surprise. Hinata clasped her hands tightly, her gaze filled with concern.
The screen showed Sasuke standing on the finger of Madara Uchiha's stone statue, staring down at Naruto.
"It wasn't meaningless," Sasuke said calmly. "To me, you're my closest friend."
Naruto's voice trembled with emotion. "Closest friend? Then why...?"
Before he could finish, Sasuke interrupted, his Sharingan glowing ominously.
"Precisely because you're my closest friend... you're worth killing."
The Rookie Nine froze in disbelief.
Naruto's face went pale as he stared at the screen, his thoughts spinning.
"Sasuke... wants to kill me?"
"Why? We're teammates, aren't we? We're friends! So why would he say something like that?"
Hinata's expression was filled with worry as she stepped closer to Naruto.
Sasuke, watching the screen, clenched his fists tightly. His normally composed demeanor wavered as the words from his future self struck him like a hammer.
"Me? Wanting to kill Naruto? No... that can't be right. Why would I ever do that?"
Even Kakashi, shaken by his own resurfaced memories, turned his attention to the screen with a grim expression.
Tears welled up in Sakura's eyes as she watched the screen.
"Sasuke-kun... what happened to you? Why would you say that to Naruto?"
The screen shifted again.
"This time, if I feel like it, I could kill you in an instant, Naruto," Sasuke's older voice said. The image showed him dressed in white, standing close behind Naruto with a hand on his shoulder.
His tone was eerily calm, yet the blade of the Kusanagi sword gleamed as he slowly drew it.
"You can't even save one comrade. How can you ever become Hokage?"
Naruto's expression in the image was quiet but resolute.
"Is that really Sasuke?" someone muttered.
"Why are they fighting? They're supposed to be friends!"
The screen shifted yet again to show their younger selves at the Valley of the End.
"Naruto, I'm going to defeat you!" Sasuke shouted, his hand crackling with the blue lightning of Chidori.
He leapt from the waterfall, descending toward Naruto with deadly intent.
Naruto's eyes narrowed. With a shadow clone at his side, he spun a glowing blue Rasengan into existence.
"Rasengan!"
The two techniques collided with a thunderous explosion that shook the valley. Water sprayed into the air as the screen filled with light.
The audience was speechless.
"They're using those kinds of techniques against each other?!"
"That's the Fourth Hokage's Rasengan! Naruto knows it?"
"And Sasuke's Chidori! That's supposed to be an elite-level jutsu!"
Even the young ninja watching were stunned.
"Naruto..." Shikamaru murmured, his expression serious. "You're not the loser we thought you were, are you?"
Hinata's gaze softened, admiration for Naruto shining in her pale eyes.
"Naruto-kun... you're amazing," she whispered to herself.
But as she glanced down at her hands, doubt crept into her heart.
"Compared to Naruto-kun... have I done enough? Am I even strong enough to stand beside him?"
