Chapter 64: Business as usual.
Dante sped to the large black SUV and got in the backseat to meet Nanao already seated there waiting for him.
"Hello Boss, how have you been?"
Without replying, he yelled at the driver "GO GO GO GO."
Heeding his instructions the driver sped off.
When they were what Dante believed to be a safe distance from the house he coolly turned to Nanao, "I'm been alright, can't complain. What about you?"
She paused for a second, as a testament to her professionalism she did not address or acknowledge Dante's previous frantic behavior. "I am well, thank you for asking."
"Are you sure? You know speaking of boyfriends. Do you have any?" Dante asked."I haven't really seen you with another guy before... Or girl." Dante continued. "We live in a very progressive era and I like to think I'm a progressive boss," Dante stated proudly.
"..."
"What, can you not find someone yourself?" Dante leaned in close and whispered to her."Cause if you can't, I know a few good-looking rich guys with great personalities from my adventure clubs that I could introduce you to."
"..."
"..."
The two just exchanged stares.
Finially Nanao spoke. "Sir, I have HR (Human Resources) on speed dial."
"What?! I'm only trying to-
Nanao took out her phone and opened her contacts.
"Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay." Dante begged profusely.
He couldn't begin to imagine the consequences if his Mom ever found out he got written up by HR, even in his own company.
But still, he couldn't help muttering under his breath. " I was only trying to help you with your single loveless life."
*Ping.*
She dialed.
"Okay. Okay. Please, please." Raised his hand in surrender.
Dante coughs "How's the business going?" Trying to change the topic.
Nanao was silent for a moment then answered. "Everything is going according to plan. Currently, we have stopped expanding and are now focused on consolidating what we have already built."
"Getting any pushback?" The conversation started to flow seamlessly, taking on a more serious tone.
"No, not really. Some companies are trying to compete with us but as of now they lack the resources necessary to do so." She continued. "I would say they would need about 2 to 3 years to catch up to us. Hence the consolidation phase, we are anticipating heavy attacks in the future. We have a large and varied customer base but do not yet have their loyalty."
"And you have a time limit of 2 years? Do you think it's possible to win them over in that small a time frame?" Dante asked, resting his arm on the armrest of the door and staring out the window.
"It matters not what I think, it is what must be done."
"Any ideas on how you are going to win them over?"
"Yes, we have a few ideas in mind. We plan to form partnerships and sponsorship deals with various heroes and other well-known figures. We will be making donations to charities and taking part in more humanitarian events. There are a few more ideas but those are the main ones."
"Sound costly."
"Yes, however, that is what needs to be done if we are to survive. It will help improve the company's image and increase the odds of customers staying with our brand."
"Okay, I trust your judgment." Dante voiced.
"Thank you, Sir." She accepted.
"How's Project Blue Sky?" Dante asked.
"Ready and waiting, Sir."
Dante smiled, "Good. Very good."
"On another note, are there any problems from within?" He asked moving on.
"Yes, but it's nothing we can't handle. There are a few higher-ups that are embezzling company funds, selling our information among a few other things." Nanao said handing Dante a tablet with a list of their wrong doings.
Pulling his attention from the window he pulled away from the armrest, took the tablet and began scrolling through. "There are quite a lot of names here." Dante hummed.
"They had their uses."
The list, detailed how they embezzled and how much they took. It also included the information some had sold. It was a list of every known crime an employee had committed in his company.
"Oba Masa?" Dante chuckled. "For a guy named Just and Fair, he is quite the crafty one...And greedy too."
"Increase his workload and responsibilities. Get him to sign a new contract while you are at it, he's stealing this much, he won't leave easily. Bait him. Make sure he works off every single yen he has taken." He said before handing back the tablet and returning to his armrest to enjoy the view with his cheek resting on his fist.
"What of the rest?" Nanao enquired.
"Fire them. Get rid of them. They are nothing special." Dante paused to think. "No... Actually, flip them for it."
"Heads, they are fired without consequences and they get to keep all the money they have stolen. Tails, bring down the full force of the company on them, take them for everything they've got and more."
"Yes, Sir," Nanao said reaching into her pocket in search of a penny.
"No, do it in front of them." Dante stopped her, then added casually. "Let them know their livelihood came down to a mere coin flip."
"..."
Nanao was silent. Sensing a hidden meaning behind the silence Dante looked at her from the corner of his eyes and reminisced.
She had always been like this for as long as he could remember. Whenever she disagree or disapproved of his actions she would say nothing unless asked at best she would convey her disagreement through her demeanour.
Dante did not understand why she acted this way. Was it to train his Vongola Intuition or perhaps his mum asked her to behave like that. Dante didn't like it, they had know each other for so long yet she was policing herself around him. But what could he do expect respect her decisions.
"You don't agree with my method, do you?" He asked.
She nodded a bit. "I'm just worried about the repercussions and how they could affect your standing as a hero in the future."
"Elaborate." Confused, Dante requested.
"Should your position in the company ever be revealed and you become a hero in the future your enemies could use such behavior to portray you in a negative light, affecting your rating with the people and your position as a hero." She explained.
Hearing her explanation Dante's eyes shifted back to the window, back to watching the buildings zip past, and gave her one simple surprising responses. "So what?"
Nanao's brows crumpled in bewilderment, she could not comprehend why Dante didn't seem to take her concerns seriously. After all, it was a valid and understandable worry.
Dante then repeated like a matter of fact. "So what if my enemies get a hold of this information? So what if the public finds out? What does it have to do with my work as a hero?"
In a nonchalant yet self-assured tone, he explained to her. "Listen Nanao, regardless of my ranking as a hero, regardless of what people think of me. I will not change. I will still continue to do what I've always done. My will as a hero is not so flimsy that it would be extinguished by mere opinions."
Hearing his responses to her worries Nanao's admiration and respect for Dante grew. She had been with him since he was very young and had seen him do numerous incredible and wondrous things. She had seen him struggle and push his way through hellfire and bone-chilling ice but at this moment, these few words of his seemed to outweigh all she had seen.
For in this moment he had proclaimed that the world could detest and hate him yet it would not halt his steps nor affect his actions.
As the head of a widely known and successful business she knew very well what it was like to bear the hatred of the public, she had seen that hatred drive people to take their own lives. Yet this boy was prepared to carry the hatred of the world.
She knew Dante well enough to know he wasn't just saying this for kicks. He meant every word.
She paused her deliberation hiding her admiration within then posed to Dante. "What if you're in the wrong? If you're just fighting for a cause that only you yourself believe is right without listening to anyone, what would be the difference between you and a villain?"
He smirked in response. "Hence, Calvin" he added. "And the team I plan to create."
"Calvin?" Nanao she asked in astonishment. "He is to stop you should you stray?!" Her eyes fluttered. "Isn't that too high an expectation?"
Dante just smiled lightly and returned his attention back to the window watching the nightlife flicker past.
The car ride continued in silence, it was unknown what Dante was thinking or if his plans would work but one thing was certain.
One does not command [Haki] nor weld a quirk like his with a weak heart.
