Chapter 63: family drama
After a few hour's drive, he arrived at his parent's home, more than a little angry, and was led in by a servant.
"Where's Rukia? I don't see her here." He asked sensing she wasn't around.
"Miss Rukia and the Madame are currently out. I heard Miss Rukia did well on her test, so the Madame took her shopping."
"Oh, that's good I guess... Rukia is very smart for her age." Dante nodded proudly.
"Yes, she is, Sir." The servant agreed.
Along the way, the servants Dante met shot him strange and awkward looks, which put Dante on edge because he was familiar with these people. And they, him. Yet, they were acting so strange around him.
He was brought to his father's office to find his father seated, waiting for him. The person that had led him there shot Dante one last look of helplessness before exiting.
Dante's father, Ezio sat behind his desk with elbows on the desk and fingers interlocked covering his mouth, a gloomy hue hanging over him.
"Dante, we have a problem." He said grimly.
More than a bit worried due to the atmosphere in the entire residence Dante asked hesitantly, "What is it, Dad?"
Ezio sighed loudly like he carried a huge pain in him. "Dante... I think your sister has a boyfriend."
"Huh??" Dante asked, so stunted by the news he failed to even process it. "What did you say?"
Releasing another deep sigh, Ezio repeated, "I said, Rukia has a boyfriend."
This time he fully heard the words of his father and realisation struck him. His eyes widened in horror.
"WHAT!!!" Dante exploded.
"What do you mean she has a boyfriend she's just a baby!" He shouted. "She's barely even 2."
"I think she's 6-" His father tried to correct.
"And that makes it right?" Dante rebuked. "How could you even let this happen?!"
"I don't know, okay!!" Ezio yelled back slamming his table and rising to his feet. "You think I wanted this to happen?!"
"If you didn't, then how could it have happened?!" Dante yelled. "You were supposed to be watching her. That is literally your job."
Hearing his son's words, Ezio fell silent. He started rubbing his temple in contemplation.
Forcefully calming himself down realizing that shouting wasn't going to get him anywhere, Dante asked, "You got any info on the kid?"
"Yeah, a bit," Ezio confirmed pointing to a thick binder on his desk.
Dante picked up the binder and began flipping through it, "Is he clean?"
"Squeaky."
"What about his parents? Family?"
"Same."
"Seriously? Not even an accidental run in with the law, a parking ticket fine, or a bad school report?"
"When I say squeaky, I mean squeaky."
"That's not good for us."
"Tell something I don't know." Ezio spat.
"It says here that his parent works in tech. Might be a little tricky, but maybe I could try to acquire some shares of their company and have them moved far away?"
"Like where? Out of town?"
"No, I was thinking more Australia or Antarctic." Dante clarified.
"You know I got a friend working in the Mar colony program. They are looking for people to sign for it. Maybe I can get them to sign up." Ezio suggested.
"How the hell are we supposed to do that?"
"I don't know, maybe we just sign up the kid?"
"You're joking, right? It's like you want Rukia to get married."
"What?! Why would you even say something like that?" Ezio rebuked. "What else can we do? We could try paying them off. But if this somehow gets back to Rukia or your mother we're dead. You hear me, we're dead!" Ezio cried.
"Okay, Okay. I think it's better if we go with my plan. It's a bit grey but through false identities and some dummy cooperations, we'll buy large shares of their company and have them promoted away. That way it never gets traced back to us." Dante said with his father nodding and humming in agreement.
"Yes, but remember under absolutely no circumstance can your mother find out about this."
"What can't I find out about?" Asked a soft soothing voice at the entrance of the office.
However, rather than soothe the two men, it sent the cold chill of fear down their spine, figuratively freezing them in place.
Entering the office the voice enquired again. "I asked you a question dear. What can't I find out about?"
Upon being called 'dear' Ezio felt true terror envelope him. All strength left his body. His legs started shaking so much you could hear his bones clicking and clacking.
In his mind he was calling for help from every god and goddess he could think of, praying for their intervention.
Seeing his dad paralyzed with fear, Dante as his accomplice took it upon himself to save their necks.
Thinking quickly, he spun around to face his mum while closing and hiding the binder he held behind him. "MOTHER. Oh, my beautiful beautiful mother. I swear your beauty grows more beautiful each beautiful day. I knew it was the beautiful you when I heard your beautiful voice. Have you done something beautiful with your beautiful hair? It looks so beautiful. The beautiful dress you're wearing is also very beautiful. In fact, your beauty is so..."
"Beautiful?" His mother finished for him.
"Mm-hm" Dante gulped nervously.
"What's that behind you?" She asked.
'Damn. Why did I open my big fat mouth now her attention is on me. And did I forget all the adjectives I know? Your beauty is so beautiful. What does that even mean?!'
"What's behind me?" Dante asked. "You mean Dad?" Pointing to his father, in an attempt to push her attention back on him.
"I mean the book you are hiding behind you."
"Umh, umm, y..you..you don't wanna see this. I..It..it's an adult magazine. That's right, it's an adult magazine. F..f.for.for.for the boys. Us boys."
"Dante, hand it over." She stretched out her hand.
Taking one last look at his father, Dante reluctantly gave his mother the file, which she began flipping through. Dante immediately tried to explain, trying to push the blame. "I was doing my homework diligently as a good son trying to make you proud, then Dad calls out of nowhere saying that it's an emergency. I just thought family first so I rushed here. To find this ridiculous file—I was just about to go looking for you, this has nothing to do with me. It's all Dad's handiwork, I'm just visiting."
Dante confessed, fully throwing, kicking, and stomping his dad under the bus. Ezio's eyes snapped to his son completely shocked at the betrayal. 'She didn't even question him?' He thought. Unfortunately for him, Dante had decided now was the perfect time to admire the woodwork in the office, avoiding eye contact with his father. Looking anywhere but at his father. 'Take one for the team Dad, I promise to visit your grave.' Dante promised.
If looks could kill, Dante would be in Hades.
"Honey, why are you investigating this boy?" She asked still flipping through the file. Receiving no answer she repeated " Can you not hear me dear? Why are you investigating this child?"
Hearing the soft yet intimidating voice of his wife, Ezio pried his eyes off his son to his wife and with his last bit of willpower conjured all the bravery he could muster. "What? Is it so wrong for a father to want to know more about his daughter's boyfriend?"
"Boyfriend? Rukia doesn't have a boyfriend and even if she did it wouldn't be this child. Rukia and him are not in the same clique or class even."
"They touched hands Hinata. He's probably already having thoughts on my Rukia. A father knows these things." Ezio exclaimed. "And besides I'm not going to do anything to the boy. Just doing a little research."
"Research? When I walked in you guys were talking about shipping him to Mar." Hinata accused.
"There were never any solid plans!" Ezio defended.
"Your binder has a section titled 'how to legally erase a child from existence." She pointed out.
"Honey, that was about Dante, not the kid." Ezio defended, stunning the traitor Dante who caught a well-deserved stray "Ouch."
Looking to his mother thinking she would defend him, all he got was a "It doesn't matter. It stops now." Dante looked at his mother in betrayal but was completely ignored by her.
She sighed, facepalmed exasperated at her husband's antics, "This is the Easter egg hunt all over again."
Causing Ezio to shout with indignation, "HE LICKED HIS LIPS. I SWEAR HE DID. I SAW HIM."
Hinata listlessly stared at him, she sighed again "Whatever, it doesn't matter. I've already called off all your little spies."
"What? How did you find out about them?" Ezio asked surprised.
"Did you actually think you could hide something from me? How cute." Hinata chuckled. "No matter what you do I'm always 3 steps ahead of you. I have eyes and ears everywhere, I see and hear all." She said haughty.
"But apparently you're too blind to see what's happening to our daughter." Ezio reflexively mumbled not so quietly.
'What? Is he trying to get himself killed?' Dante thought shocked at his dad's newfound courage.
"What!" Hinata asked sternly.
At this point, Ezio realized what he had just said and gulped in fear.
She laughed in clear anger. She turned to Dante and said. "Dante I called Nanao she should be here by now. Leave, you have school tomorrow."
Ezio, in an attempt not to lose his one and only witness chimed in after her "Don't you dare go anywhere, Dante!" He ordered.
But before he could even finish his sentence Dante was out the door, down the stairs, and at the car. He was gone.
"..."
"..."
Ezio watched the door swing close as his son made his departure, soon hearing the screeching of the car in the distance as it left, leaving him alone in the silent office with his wife.
'That bastard, he left me here to die.' He unwittingly cursed himself.
Looking back at his menacing wife, more scared than he had ever been.
