Chapter 35 - Unexpected Encounter
After traveling for five days, the people in the convoy had become familiar with each other. Some had even bonded closely, calling each other brothers and sisters in arms. However, Bai Qi and his group remained quite reserved and spoke little, making them the least popular among the convoy.
Nevertheless, Bai Qi and Tian Hai’s formidable abilities made others wary.
In the ten or so days since the apocalypse began, no one had considered robbing Bai Qi’s group. The reason was simple: everyone had seen that aside from two bags of food, Bai Qi’s group had very little, and it was unclear if it would last until they reached A City. Instead of thinking of robbing them, people were actually afraid of being robbed by them.
The black-clad young man who seemed to be the leader was very generous to his girlfriend, always giving her a whole bottle of water for her personal use during their daily routines.
It dawned on them later that this person wasn’t just planning to rob others if they ran short. Instead, they realized that the man was using his ice abilities every morning to melt ice into water for his girlfriend’s daily washing.
Thus, whenever Bai Qi took out water for Tang Ruo to wash up, people would look at him with admiration, thinking, “What a great boyfriend…”
In reality, Tian Hai was well aware that all the mineral water came from Bai Qi’s “bag.” Without it, they wouldn’t have had enough water for Tang Ruo’s daily washing.
Moreover, many items were directly retrieved from that “bag,” and the process of taking out and putting away items was continuous.
Seeing so much of it, Tian Hai was no longer surprised. In fact, it would be odd if one day Tang Ruo didn’t have hot food and drinks.
Due to the heavy traffic on the highway, Bai Qi didn’t go out to collect crystal nuclei. With so many people around, zombies were usually taken down by abilities from a distance before they even got close, and Bai Qi didn’t want to stray too far.
After passing L City, the roads cleared up a bit, and the convoy’s speed increased.
The journey, which used to take just a day and night before the apocalypse, now took over a week, which was quite distressing for everyone.
As they neared A City, the number of zombies on the road increased.
So, everyone established some rules, with the most important one being who would take turns keeping watch at night.
This rule was strictly enforced, requiring all ability users in the convoy to participate unconditionally.
Since the rule was also beneficial to everyone, there were no objections.
However, during the initial stages of setting up this system, there were often instances where those on night watch fell asleep. At that time, no major incidents occurred, as long as the car doors were locked, even lower-level zombies couldn’t break them open.
Of course, this was partly because there weren’t many zombies. If there were a large-scale gathering, not only would car windows be smashed, but even walls could be worn down.
However, as they approached A City, there was an incident where a family on night watch nearly got bitten by zombies inside their car.
Over twenty zombies surrounded that vehicle.
It was only when the car behind them honked that everyone became aware of the situation.
That night, when the zombies approached, Tang Ruo, who was busy in her space, also woke up but was held back by Bai Qi. They expected the night watchmen to notice, but after waiting for a long time with no response, and seeing that the zombies were about to break the family’s car window, Bai Qi had no choice but to have Tian Hai sound the horn.
Afterward, the two-night watchmen were naturally criticized by everyone. Tian Hai, who had gotten up to use the restroom and reacted in time, was thanked by the group.
Tian Hai, reddened and deeply embarrassed, stood among the crowd and expressed that it was the right thing to do.
The others thought he was a good kid, doing good deeds without arrogance.
However, Tian Hai felt deeply ashamed because, in reality, he had been sound asleep that night and was awakened by Bai Qi.
Tian Hai turned to look at Bai Qi, who was still standing there with an icy, flawless demeanor. His admiration for Bai Qi suddenly increased severalfold.
Such a person who does good deeds anonymously is indeed someone worth wholeheartedly following.
By coincidence, Bai Qi was unaware that he had gained another devoted follower under these circumstances.
After that night, when the ability users used their dazzling skills to clear out zombies, the previously quiet caravan took on a different flavor.
At first, everyone felt okay just sitting in the car and moving with the convoy. Before the apocalypse, their education had not prepared them for this reality.
However, after that night, those without abilities truly realized their own vulnerability and insignificance in the face of zombies.
Soon, some of the ordinary people who felt inferior or lacked confidence began to seek protection and support.
Those with ability users in their own cars naturally looked to him as their leader, while those without abilities sought out ability users in other cars.
Some people played up their age or used their youthful charm; others showed off their assets or flashed smiles…
Naturally, a few girls would occasionally come by to “coincidentally” encounter Bai Qi.
Despite his apparent relationship with a girlfriend, his good looks and powerful abilities drew many women who still wanted to meet him.
When Bai Qi washed his face, someone would say “Good morning.”
When he brushed his teeth, someone would invite him to join them.
Even when he went to the bushes, people would run up claiming they had a stomachache…
But beauty is fickle while flowing water is indifferent.
Bai Qi did not give even a hint of a favorable expression to anyone.
He thought that if someone were to approach him with such “shamelessness” again tomorrow, he would just leave the convoy with Tang Ruo and take the national road through the suburbs to A City.
He was confident that as long as they didn’t encounter a zombie horde, the three of them would be able to reach A City without failure.
It was a pity that, before the apocalypse in his previous life, he had always strived to be a refined, wealthy, and scholarly gentleman.
After the apocalypse, he remained obsessed with being a pure and impoverished “dirty” loser.
He had truly never experienced the concept of “emotional intelligence.”
The same treatment was also suffered by Tian Hai.
Tian Hai did not understand the subtleties in people’s hints, so he just adopted Bai Qi’s attitude of treating everyone equally, ignoring everyone completely.
