Chapter 34 - Boyfriend
Early the next morning, everyone woke up early.
Zhao Zhqiang’s wife was the first to leave the supermarket. She saw Tian Hai already up, standing by the car and diligently folding blankets.
She felt a bit of warmth towards the earnest young man and said with a smile, “You’re up really early, young man.” She then walked past him to the back of her car to get things for boiling water and making breakfast.
Since they had left H City, and both her husband and brother-in-law had awakened their abilities, they had brought plenty of supplies. With nearly everything from the small convenience store now in their possession, they naturally wanted to make a meal for everyone.
Tian Hai saw Zhao’s wife take out a coal stove and prepare to cook, so he asked if she needed help.
After receiving a positive response, he naturally helped her with carrying things and the like.
One by one, everyone got up.
Zhao Zhqiang, while wiping his son’s face with a damp towel, noticed Bai Qi holding a toothbrush with toothpaste and pouring water from a bottle into a cup.
He had seen Bai Qi wash up earlier, using only a small amount of water, and now he was preparing to use a whole bottle of water just for brushing his teeth. This naturally surprised him.
“You really can’t say enough about this boyfriend of yours,” Zhao Zhqiang said, giving a thumbs-up. He thought to himself that he couldn’t do it, even for his own son. He wasn’t generous enough to use a whole bottle of mineral water for brushing teeth, not before the apocalypse, and even less so after.
It’s important to know that now that the water source is contaminated, using one bottle means there’s one less bottle available.
Looking at how clean Tang Ruo was, Zhao Zhqiang couldn’t help but sigh, thinking that this girlfriend was a bit too pampered.
Bai Qi just curled the corner of his mouth and didn’t respond.
He had developed a habit of being frugal with water during the apocalypse over the past three years. However, he liked seeing Tang Ruo looking so clean.
He turned around and pulled out Tang Ruo, who was still half-asleep, and handed her the toothbrush and cup: “Brush your teeth first, then wash your face with cold water. It’s time to eat.”
Tang Ruo didn’t know about Zhao Zhqiang’s earlier sigh. She brushed her teeth as usual, washed her face with a damp towel, and cleaned her hands and neck.
Once everyone had finished their simple morning routine, Zhao’s wife called everyone to breakfast.
The breakfast was quite simple—just boiling water and adding several packs of seafood-flavored instant noodles.
After breakfast, Zhao Zhqiang and the others came to bid farewell to Bai Qi. They planned to return to their hometown for a visit. He said that the area had few people and each household had some stored food, so he felt it would be safer to go there.
Bai Qi didn’t object and had no intention of traveling with them. If possible, he would have preferred Zhao Zhqiang to take Tian Hai with him.
The vehicles split into two groups, and the three of them continued driving towards City A.
As Bai Qi was driving, he noticed Tang Ruo holding her stomach, apparently not used to the breakfast they had. From what he had observed recently, Tang Ruo was quite particular about health and nutrition. She had probably eaten all the instant noodles given by Zhao’s wife out of politeness.
He then said to Tian Hai in the back seat, “Bring me the bag from the back seat.”
Tian Hai quickly handed over the bag.
Bai Qi took the bag, reached inside, and then said to Tang Ruo, “Take a cup of soy milk from inside to warm your stomach.”
Tang Ruo glanced at Bai Qi. Since he suggested it, she quickly reached in and took out three steaming cups of soy milk from her space.
They each took a cup.
Tian Hai, holding his cup of soy milk, was stunned: “…”
What is this, a magic trick?
Although Tian Hai had been having lunch and dinner with Bai Qi and Tang Ruo for the past few days, he had only seen Bai Qi produce ordinary food items like rice balls or buns, and never hot meals.
Though puzzled, he didn’t ask any questions. He figured that if Bai Qi and Tang Ruo didn’t want him to know something, it was probably best if he didn’t.
In the past few days, Tian Hai had already seen many different types of abilities, so Bai Qi having spatial and ice abilities didn’t seem too surprising to him.
Moreover, seeing Bai Qi allow Tang Ruo to take out soy milk for him made Tian Hai very happy. It meant that Bai Qi had accepted him as part of their group.
Otherwise, such a secret would not be shared with an outsider.
Since the apocalypse had just begun, there were still quite a few vehicles on the road. Occasionally, they encountered roadblocks, especially at the sharp turns leading into city areas where traffic would become even more congested.
Additionally, there were more zombies around, seemingly following the vehicles.
Fortunately, there were many ability users in the convoy now. When they encountered empty vehicles blocking the road, metal-type ability users would move them aside. If the road conditions were poor, earth-type ability users would smooth it out.
When dealing with zombies, the abilities were even more spectacular—fire, lightning, wind, water, and earth could all be seen in action.
The journey was smooth and uneventful.
Inside the vehicle, Tang Ruo practiced her mental abilities, focusing on the zombies occasionally visible from the highway. Tian Hai was also quiet, occasionally throwing his lightning balls at zombies he saw.
At night, the three of them, like everyone else, spent the night in their vehicle. With so many people around and being stuck in the middle of the road, it was the only option.
During the night, Bai Qi would switch seats with Tian Hai, letting him and Tang Ruo sit in the back seat, covered with blankets to sleep. Tian Hai would take the front passenger seat and also sleep with a blanket.
After being stuck for two days, Tian Hai had finally become competent enough to sit in the driver’s seat. Over those two days, he had learned how to drive through trial and error. Naturally, Bai Qi handed over the driving duties to him.
Now, driving didn’t require any special skills; all Tian Hai needed to do was follow the direction of the main convoy.
The most important thing was that there were no more traffic police enforcing fines on the road.
After passing through L City, the road conditions improved significantly. Many people got off the highway in L City, as there was a military base stationed there. After the apocalypse, many people had no place to go, and instead of traveling to the unknown A City, it was better to settle in L City.
