Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 36 - Throbbing

Today, it happened that Bai Qi and another ability user from a different vehicle were on night duty. Their shift was the first half of the night, from 6 PM to midnight.

Recently, the increase in zombies has made everyone quite uneasy.

Bai Qi, having been familiar with night duty from his three years in the apocalypse, sat down on the highway guardrail next to his vehicle. The other ability user was a man in his forties, who seemed inexperienced with night shifts. Seeing Bai Qi sitting there calmly, he walked over and greeted him: “You’re looking quite energetic, unlike us old bones who might not last. Look, I even brought some cigarettes to keep me awake. Do you want one?” He offered a cigarette.

Bai Qi shook his head and declined: “No, thank you.”

The middle-aged man said, “I’m Pan Dawei. I saw from the statistics that your name is Bai Yan, right?”

When the regulations were first established, everyone had registered their names.

Bai Qi nodded.

Hearing the distant hissing sounds of zombies, Pan Dawei shook his shoulders and said, “Young man, don’t be so aloof. Let’s chat a bit; otherwise, listening to those monsters can be quite unsettling.”

Bai Qi tilted his head and asked, “Chat about what?”

Pan Dawei chuckled twice and leaned closer to Bai Qi, whispering, “I’ve noticed that many beautiful women have been approaching you recently…”

Bai Qi looked at the headlights of the vehicles ahead of the convoy that was still not turned off and said, “There are more zombies around at night lately. It’s better to keep it low-key. After all, with so many people relying on us for night watch, it’s important to stay vigilant.”

Such a lame attempt to change the topic, how could I fall for it? Pan Dawei patted his shoulder and said, “Come on, don’t be so serious. Let’s share some experiences. I’m an older guy who’s been through this; I know a thing or two about women. Let me tell you, women should…”

Bai Qi interrupted, “I just saw Old Qin heading towards the back lawn; he seems to be going to the restroom. He might come over soon…”

Pan Dawei: “…”

Old Qin is the oldest person in the convoy and also Pan Dawei’s father-in-law.

Their family had relatively good luck; all three of them managed to escape together. They’re now heading to A City to find their daughter who was studying there. However, from their daughter’s last phone call, it seems she has already settled in the base in A City. So, while Pan Dawei’s family is worried, they can still make a small joke about it.

Pan Dawei touched his nose and remarked, “Youth is really something special.” He then went to the front of the convoy to take his turn on night watch. He was just bored and came over to chat; there wasn’t anything pressing to discuss.

He had brought up his father-in-law to show that talking about women wasn’t a big deal, but if his wife found out, it would be a different story!

The convoy was well-organized; whoever was on night watch would have their vehicle moved to the front or the back of the line. They didn’t need to leave the vehicle—just stay inside and honk the horn if they encountered zombies to alert everyone.

Pan Dawei went back to his vehicle and settled in. Tang Ruo then handed him some walnuts and peanut candy, saying, “It’s really cold outside now.”

Since it was pitch dark, those in the last row of the convoy couldn’t see what was happening outside.

Bai Qi took the warm peanut candy from her hand and said, “It’s cold. You should go to sleep early.”

Tang Ruo leaned against the car window and said, “You should come to sleep too.”

Bai Qi knew Tang Ruo had mental abilities and wasn’t worried about a zombie attack, but he still didn’t agree. “Be good and go to sleep.”

Tang Ruo understood that Bai Qi’s refusal was because he didn’t want her to become a burden, but she still stubbornly tried to argue, pouting to show her displeasure.

She had been feeling this way for a while, especially since many young women had been coming and going. Even though she was open-minded, she could sense something.

Fortunately, Bai Qi remained indifferent to all of them and even seemed to dislike them greatly.

Bai Qi looked at her and pressed his index finger against her pouting lips. “At your age, acting cute is quite shameful.”

Tang Ruo’s eyes widened, showing a hint of disbelief and longing.

I just expressed a bit of dissatisfaction, and you responded so ruthlessly!

His hand lightly brushed over her soft, moist lips, and he felt a stirring sensation rise in his chest, something welling up inside.

It was itchy, warm…

Seeing her ‘silly’ expression, Bai Qi withdrew his hand. “Be good, go to sleep.”

If he continued looking, he couldn’t guarantee he wouldn’t end up kissing her.

Tang Ruo felt a tingling, soft sensation where his hand had just brushed against her.

Her heart tightened suddenly before softening and rippling outward in layers…

His low voice, clear and slightly magnetic, was like fine sand beneath the water, reflecting the moonlight of the evening.

So soft it made one want to sink into it.

Tang Ruo felt her face must be flushed bright red now!

Seeing her reaction, Bai Qi’s usually calm eyes showed a hint of amusement. He let out a brief, melodious laugh, deep and pleasant, like a soft song.

However, before they could further discuss their feelings or talk about life, Tang Ruo’s expression tightened.

Then Bai Qi saw her hurriedly open the door, saying, “What do we do, what do we do…”

Bai Qi, confused, responded with a, “Hmm?”

Tang Ruo felt herself almost incoherent: “Zombies, so many zombies ahead, so many…”

Bai Qi’s face darkened: “How many?”

He knew Tang Ruo’s enhanced mental power allowed her to sense zombies from further away.

“I can’t count them, there are too many…” Tang Ruo’s face was pale, and she looked as if she was about to cry.

Bai Qi pulled her into his arms and then, moving past the front of the car, pressed the horn long and hard on the steering wheel.

Naturally, everyone in the convoy was startled awake.

The first person to wake up and ask Bai Qi was Tian Hai.

“Brother Bai, are there zombies?” he said while rubbing his face and jumping out of the car.

Actually, many people were still awake and, hearing the commotion, they began to get out of their cars.

“Zombies? Where…”

“There are zombies?”
