Chapter 90: Chapter 90 - The Past Does Not Matter
Third person POV
(Flashback ended; Back to the present…)
Wanting to change the course of the conversation with Rico and his group, Marshall asked them, "Well! Are you guys hungry? It's noon now."
"Oh, we are," Jonathan responded.
"Do you know any places where we can eat a good meal?" Campillo asked.
Rico then nodded.
"Oh! I know a bakery that makes the city's best pastries with cheese and curry in it," Marshall responded back. "I am a cashier there, so come with me."
Marshall and his Pokémon then led them to his bakery workplace down the street.
There, he opened the front door of the bakery, known as the Goryo Pastries, for them. "Come in." Rico and his group did so, and Marshall and his Pokémon went in, before Marshall would close the door. Inside the vibrant and nice interior, Marshall's manager, a man named Goryo Aganad, greeted him with a welcome back. As Marshall replied back to his manager, Rico and his group were astonished at their very good manager-employee relationship.
"It seems that both of them got along very well," Rico commented.
Riolu then responded with agreement and astonishment.
"Also, it seemed that Marshall had adapted to the way of life here in Philas," Juan said to Rico close to his ear.
Rico then nodded in agreement.
After that, Goryo said to Rico and his group, "Welcome to my shop. It seemed that my employee Marshall had brought you guys because all of you were hungry. Well then, we had the best pastries around the block that are always hot, soft, and fresh from the ovens." The manager then gestured to his counter display of different breads and pastries. Some were filled with fillings like melted chocolate, vanilla, strawberry jam, Yellow Curry with potatoes, and hazelnut while others were glazed with melted sweets or sprinkled with powdered sugar. Rico and his group then went to the counter to take a look at them so they could buy some of them for a light and simple lunch. Rico and his team requested some croissants with Tamato Berry bits-filled Yellow Curry in them and some glasses of Iced Tea while Jonathan and his Pokémon team went for Simple Bread with Melted Cheese and Ketchup on it. Juan, Campillo, and their Pokémon teams ordered a baked bread in the shape of a thick book, one of the bakery's specialty breads. The drinks was the same: glasses of iced tea. Delighted, Goryo and Marshall went to pick up their order and filled the glasses with iced tea and iced cubes, before giving them to Rico and his group. The total price was 500 Poké Dollars. Jonathan and Campillo paid for it.
"Thank you," Marshall happily responded while receiving the payment, before opening the cash register to put the money.
He then printed out the receipt, gave it to them, and said, "Thanks for coming here. You may sit at our bakery's dining area."
Goryo then pointed at the bakery's tables and chairs for dining.
Upon seeing that, Rico and his group went there, with Rico saying thank you to Goryo and Marshall.
Once Rico and his group sat down to eat their meal, Goryo gave Marshall a pat on the back. "Good job, my friend." Marshall looked at him with a positive look on his face. "Thanks, sir."
"Also, have you told them about your past? You know, your villainous past?"
"Oh, um…I didn't."
"Good, you shouldn't…for now."
At their table, Rico and his group are eating their pastry meal delightfully. All of their Pokémon are out of their Poké Balls so they could eat up for lunch. Rico took pictures of him and the others eating their pastry delights, before putting his phone down to resume eating.
And then, a bit later, just as Rico and his group had finished their meal, someone with a Helioptile came to the store while looking in his phone to check if it was the right place he was looking for. When Goryo and Marshall looked at him, Marshall was shocked because the person was…
"Marshall, my son!" the man, Marshall's father, said to him with happiness to see him again months after he left home, before going to him to give him a good and quick hug. "There you are, I had been searching for you."
Marshall felt a bit uncomfortable by this but went along with it, for he hadn't seen his father for months.
Rico and his group heard and noticed that and looked at them, only to be taken aback by it.
"Woah, who is that?" Rico asked.
"His father?" Jonathan added, trying to make sense of what the man had said to Marshall upon entering the store seconds ago.
Goryo was taken aback by this, too, and said to the man, "Um, is this young man your son, sir?"
Marshall's father, Marc Jamie, then looked at him. "Yes, this is my son."
"Oh…"
And then, Rico and his Riolu and Absol went to them, and Rico asked what is going on.
Marc and the others then heard that and looked at him. Marc eventually explained about everything, including Marshall's past. But first things first, Marc explained that he was a native of Philas who was born and raised in Hari City, before migrating to Kalos to work as a baker in Lumiose City for 16 years. While in his residence in Kalos, he eventually met Marshall's late mother, and both of them got married a year later, gave birth to Marshall, and raised him for 10 years. But when Marshall was 12 years old, his mother fell ill and passed away, leaving him to live with his father. Then, a year after becoming a Pokémon Trainer, Marshall joined Team Flare for money and power, ended up regretting at the time of the unleashing of Team Flare's ultimate plan on Zygarde and Kalos, and got arrested and imprisoned for 2 years and 5 months, before being released for good behavior. After that, Marc gave Marshall some money so his son and his Pokémon team could travel the world to start anew somewhere. Then, after nearly a year of being separated from Marshall, Marc eventually resigned from his job in Kalos and returned to Philas to live in his hometown of Hari City, working as a taxi driver to make a living while living near his relatives' homes, who resided in Hari City and Kaya City.
After hearing that long backstory, Rico and his group, who went to them while being intrigued by Marc's backstory, were stunned with astonishment. Marshall confirmed it and expressed his fear of being judged by them for his past, before apologizing to them for not telling them that.
"Judging you for your villainous past?" Rico responded back. "No, we won't, and I won't do that either. The past doesn't matter at all, as long as you had come to your senses and changed for the better."
His Riolu and Absol, alongside Starly and Litleo, then nodded to support his statement.
Marshall was stunned at his kindness.
