Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The First Night and New Companions
Under the night sky, the farm was silent.
On the second floor, Natsume lay soundly asleep on the mattress he had brought with him.
The furniture would not arrive until tomorrow morning, so for tonight, this would suffice.
That was Natsume's thought.
"Chirp?"
As night fell, many Pokémon in the farm began to stir.
A curious Rattata poked its head out from the grass.
It had noticed earlier in the afternoon that the house, which had been empty since it made some noise, was now occupied by new residents.
This made Rattata somewhat unhappy.
In its life, it had long regarded that place as its own adventure spot with its siblings.
Having its "secret base" suddenly occupied by someone else left Rattata feeling displeased.
"Chirp!"
The little paws rubbed vigorously against its nose.
Rattata had made up its mind.
It would give this uninvited guest a little "surprise"!
In the midst of its contemplation, Rattata did not notice that a rather large shadow had appeared behind it.
As the clouds in the sky dispersed, the gentle moonlight spilled softly onto the ground.
The massive shadow completely covered Rattata's small body.
Only then did Rattata realize, somewhat belatedly, that it seemed to have been discovered.
"Boom!"
A paw wrapped in shimmering white light swiped through the air.
It struck Rattata with pinpoint accuracy.
The hit sent Rattata flying in a graceful arc.
After hitting the ground, it bounced a few times like a rubber ball and disappeared into the grass.
"Mmm..."
Persian, retracting its paw, glanced at the Rattata peeking out with its little eyes in the bushes.
It then turned and continued its nightly patrol.
As is well known, cats are nocturnal animals.
Tonight marked Persian's first night at the farm.
As a territory-conscious feline Pokémon, Persian was already contemplating how to establish its territorial boundaries.
With its tail hanging gracefully behind it, Persian walked elegantly through the underbrush.
Its soft paw pads made no sound as they stepped on the ground.
When it glanced at the Pokémon living on the farm, Persian showed little interest and moved on.
Only those Pokémon attempting to approach the house would catch Persian's eye.
Then they would be swiftly dealt with.
Thus, the farm's first night passed quietly.
In the morning, many Pokémon on the farm were surprised to discover that the human who had come yesterday was now accompanied by a large group of humans entering the farm.
"Just put this sofa in the living room on the first floor."
"This small bed goes in the secondary bedroom on the second floor, which is the one closest to the staircase."
Directing a crew of Machop and Machoke to set up the furniture, Natsume efficiently completed the payment to the moving company.
"Now that this is done, the next step is to familiarize ourselves with the residents of the farm."
He marked a check next to the task of "arranging" the house in his notebook.
Natsume began to patrol the farm with his three Pokémon.
Yesterday, when he came with the mayor, he had only taken a brief look around.
Today, he aimed to declare his presence to the Pokémon living on the farm.
At the same time, he intended to capture some new Pokémon.
After all, they were in the world of Pokémon.
Who would still farm by themselves?
Was it that Sandshrew couldn't dig through rocks, or was Diglett having trouble burrowing through dirt?
For electricity, there were Magnemite and Pikachu, and for watering, there were Psyduck and Lotad.
Whether in production, daily life, or other fields, Pokémon had long become an integral part of people's lives.
If Natsume intended to continue being a trainer, he naturally had to implement an elite strategy.
In Natsume's view, being a trainer was much like being in a romantic relationship.
A person's love is finite; it cannot be shared among too many people.
The same goes for a trainer's energy.
If there are too many romantic interests, one could end up exhausted.
However, as a farm owner, having more Pokémon was advantageous, as long as he could afford to take care of them.
As Natsume wandered through the farm with Persian, Butterfree, and Rookidee, he suddenly felt a sense of kinship.
He felt like a hunter in the jungle.
Butterfree was the falcon searching for prey, and Persian the hound charging out to tear into the game.
As for Rookidee...
It was the mascot.
If only he had a gun in his hand, it would feel even more fitting.
"Chirp?"
As he passed by a small mound, a curious Sandshrew poked its head out.
Its dark eyes revealed a hint of confusion, not understanding what this human wanted to do.
"Hello, Sandshrew! I am the new owner of this farm."
"I would like to invite you to become my partner."
Bending down, Natsume squatted in front of Sandshrew and extended his hand.
Tilting its head, Sandshrew was trying to comprehend Natsume's words.
"Chirp?"
'What do you want me to do? What's in it for me?'
Sandshrew did not sense any malicious intent from Natsume; instead, it felt a desire to get closer to him. Hence, it voiced its questions.
Natsume understood Sandshrew's meaning.
He took out a small box and poured a few Pokéblocks from it.
Unlike the ones he had given to Persian and the others last night, these Pokéblocks were a sandy yellow color.
In them, a faint yellow energy flowed visibly.
"In the future, you will be responsible for the farming here. As for your reward, it will be these Pokéblocks."
"Chirp!"
Sandshrew leaned in to sniff Natsume's hand.
In the next moment, its eyes sparkled with excitement.
Embracing Natsume's hand, it buried its head in his palm and began munching eagerly.
It quickly devoured several Pokéblocks.
"Chirp?"
'Will there be more in the future?'
"As long as you are willing to be my partner."
"Chirp~"
"Chirp chirp."
'Alright then.'
'But I have to say upfront, I don't like battles.'
"No problem."
Natsume took out a Poké Ball and placed it in front of Sandshrew.
Sandshrew instinctively reached out with its little paw and pressed the button on the Poké Ball.
In the next second, Sandshrew was sucked into the Poké Ball.
After shaking a few times symbolically, it settled down quietly.
"I've captured Sandshrew."
Natsume felt quite pleased after capturing Sandshrew.
After releasing Sandshrew, he fulfilled his promise.
He treated Sandshrew to a delightful feast of Pokéblocks.
"Bang—"
Just as Natsume was squatting down to bond with Sandshrew, a loud explosion came from the nearby woods.
Startled, Sandshrew dropped the Pokéblocks it was holding.
Regaining its composure, Sandshrew hurriedly picked up the fallen Pokéblocks and stuffed them into its mouth.
As long as it was within three seconds, it was still edible. jpg
Besides, for a Ground-type Pokémon, what's three seconds? They would even dare to eat dirt!
Let alone food that fell on the ground.
"What was that explosion just now?"
"Chirp chirp~"
After patting its chest, Sandshrew, having wolfed down the Pokéblocks in one go, began explaining to Natsume.
After hearing Sandshrew's explanation, Natsume understood the situation.
