Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Unique Command Style
Despite enduring the explosive impact of Flamethrower, Drifblim remained combat-ready but showed numerous burn marks on its purple balloon body, indicating significant injuries.
Lian was not surprised that Drifblim could continue battling. After all, it had used Shadow Ball to partially absorb the power of Flamethrower. However, even with that defense, Drifblim likely couldn't withstand another full-force Flamethrower attack.
With Lian's current Special Attack ability value, combined with the strength of Flamethrower and the Charcoal around his neck providing additional flame energy, this move reached an unprecedented level of potency.
If not for Shadow Ball mitigating some damage, Drifblim would have sustained even more severe injuries. Nevertheless, the outcome was favorable. In clashes between moves, type effectiveness matters, but equally important are the form and power of the attacks.
Given the current situation, if the opponent persisted in direct confrontations, Drifblim's defeat seemed inevitable.
The opponent had two options: either switch Pokemon or use a different move. However, Drifblim's Special Attack was not particularly high, and Shadow Ball was its strongest Special Attack move.
Nevertheless, Lian noticed that Drifblim could also employ Phantom Force, a potentially dangerous attack for him, requiring vigilance.
"Charmeleon, continue using Flamethrower."
Kalia, aware that Charmeleon had learned Flamethrower, decided against having it use Hidden Power again. Compared to Hidden Power, Flamethrower was clearly stronger.
On the other side, realizing Charmeleon's strength, the young challenger put aside his initial dismissiveness and began focusing seriously.
"Drifblim, use Phantom Force to hide and look for an opportunity to strike."
As expected, Lian anticipated this move earlier. Unlike Shadow Ball, Phantom Force is more suitable for surprise attacks, akin to Feint Attack.
However, compared to Feint Attack, Phantom Force is even more unpredictable and possesses greater power.
Before Lian could unleash Flamethrower, Drifblim suddenly vanished from sight.
Lian scanned the entire battlefield but couldn't locate Drifblim. Clearly, it had used Phantom Force, entering another dimension until its attack moment.
Lian was unable to counter with his own move as Drifblim executed Phantom Force swiftly, almost immediately upon the Trainer's command.
He could only stand alert, monitoring his surroundings for any sudden appearance of the opponent, ensuring he wouldn't be caught off guard.
Kalia suddenly instructed, "Charmeleon, use Smokescreen around you first." The weakness of such moves is that the attacker must reveal themselves when striking. Thus, Charmeleon needed to prepare defensively instead of waiting for the assault.
Lian also recognized that using Smokescreen for defense was optimal at this point. With a dense cloud enveloping the area, Drifblim would struggle to determine his position when preparing to attack.
However, deploying Smokescreen strategically was crucial; it couldn't just cover one direction but should surround him completely. Lian's mastery of the Smokescreen move allowed him to produce ample smoke without much difficulty.
In the next moment, Lian expelled thick black smoke from his mouth, creating layers that enveloped him completely. The dense cloud obscured Lian's view of the outside, but likewise, it prevented others from seeing within.
Lian's Smokescreen proved effective as Drifblim approached nearby, ready to emerge and attack.
However, upon materializing, it found itself instantly surrounded by impenetrable fog, unable to locate Charmeleon's position and thus incapable of launching an assault.
"Charmeleon, release Flamethrower towards the six o'clock direction relative to me!" Kalia commanded.
Although the Smokescreen also hindered Charmeleon's visibility, Kalia served as its eyes, able to spot Drifblim beyond the haze.
This command was quite complex; first, Charmeleon needed to know Kalia's location and then understand roughly where the six o'clock direction lay. Most Pokemon would struggle to comprehend such instructions.
But Charmeleon was different - always intelligent and highly autonomous. This prompted Kalia's sudden insight, wanting to test Charmeleon's ability to follow more intricate commands.
When Lian heard Kalia's command, he was momentarily taken aback. Such a complex instruction indeed wasn't comprehensible by most Pokemon; only someone like him could understand it.
Upon further reflection, having unique communication signals between Kalia and himself during battles would keep their opponents guessing about which moves they were going to use. Unfortunately, he couldn't directly suggest this idea.
While there undoubtedly exist highly intelligent Pokemon in this world, capable of speaking and writing, Lian remained just an ordinary Charmeleon and had to avoid appearing too exceptional.
Naturally, Lian knew Kalia's position. Based on Drifblim's previous flight altitude, he quickly determined its location. With a wide-open mouth, he unleashed a long, fiery stream resembling a blazing dragon, effortlessly piercing through the Smokescreen barrier.
Boom!
The flames struck the smoke-obscured Drifblim head-on. Although slightly off-target, it didn't hinder the impact. As the fire erupted, Drifblim once again endured intense burning.
The young Trainer, hindered by the dense Smokescreen, couldn't clearly observe the situation, feeling anxious yet powerless. The cloud was simply too thick, engulfing everything in darkness.
As the smoke gradually dispersed, Drifblim, though not completely incapacitated, appeared significantly weakened. It could barely sway its four colorful ribbons while floating in the air.
"How is this possible?"
The young challenger was stunned; his Phantom Force attack had failed, instead allowing Charmeleon's Flamethrower to hit successfully.
Still able to fight?
Lian was also surprised that Drifblim remained standing. Apparently, the initial Flamethrower caused less damage than anticipated. Otherwise, based on his calculations, two consecutive Flamethrowers should have been enough to render it incapable of battling further.
Seeing Drifblim nearing exhaustion, the young challenger decided against recalling it and quickly commanded, "Drifblim, use Minimize."
His demeanor shifted from relaxed to tense, realizing he might lose yet another challenge today. This would mark his third defeat, and each attempt cost a significant number of Alliance Coins.
He initially thought Charmeleon would be easy prey, but unexpectedly, it proved quite formidable. So far, Drifblim hadn't managed to land a single successful attack.
His only option now was to focus on defense; Minimize proved quite effective, especially with the surrounding smoke providing cover for Drifblim's body, allowing him to seek opportunities to counterattack.
"Use Dragon Breath, Charmeleon!" Kalia swiftly commanded.
In this smoky environment, Drifblim had already started shifting its position. To capitalize before it moved too far away, they needed to act quickly.
Before Kalia finished her sentence, Lian unleashed Dragon Breath again. The reason behind choosing this move was due to Flamethrower having a longer cooldown period; his fire energy hadn't fully recovered yet, which Kalia also took into account.
At this point, Drifblim couldn't withstand any more attacks, as its remaining stamina was minimal, making Dragon Breath sufficient to defeat it.
Lian had high proficiency in Dragon Breath, second only to Dragon Rage in terms of usage frequency. It effortlessly came forth at his command.
The Dragon Breath instantly dispersed the surrounding Smokescreen and charged directly towards Drifblim. With its slow speed, Drifblim was swiftly blown away by the intense force of Lian's Dragon Breath.
Depleted of all remaining stamina, Drifblim could only fall to the ground, slipping into unconsciousness.
