Chapter 95: Chapter 95: First Battle
Battle Tower, Fifth Floor.
"Are you really determined to start guarding today?" Manager Gus asked again. Kalia had the opportunity to return and prepare for tomorrow, but she insisted on beginning her duties immediately.
"Yes," Kalia nodded. Starting today or tomorrow made no difference to her; she could treat this as practical combat training. Previously, Kalia had continuously challenged Trainers every day without interruption.
She had clear goals, and by relentlessly pursuing them, any obstacles along the way became stepping stones for growth. Although some might be thorny, she remained undaunted.
"Well then, I won't delay further. Let me arrange challengers for you right away. The other floor guardians have been under considerable pressure lately, so it's perfect timing to alleviate some of their burden." Manager Gus promptly began scheduling challengers for Kalia.
The Battle Tower operates with multiple floor guardians per level. When a challenger initiates a challenge, they randomly face one of the floor guardians. If defeated, they can continue challenging but must spend Alliance Coins each time. After accumulating five defeats, they must retreat to the previous level and restart their ascent. Conversely, upon achieving five consecutive victories, they may proceed to the next level.
Currently, there were more challengers than guardians, leading to each floor guardian facing multiple battles daily against different opponents. With Kalia sharing the burden, it would provide some relief for the other guardians.
Shortly, Kalia arrived at Battle Arena 3 on the fifth floor. The rooms within the Battle Tower were not ordinary; they utilized space technology, appearing small from the outside but significantly larger inside.
The principle is similar to Poké Balls but even more advanced. This innovative space technology contributes to the popularity of the Battle Tower, attracting numerous Trainers.
Despite its tower-like appearance, the interior offers vast spaces, with each room equivalent in size to a standard battle arena. The only drawback is that many Pokemon moves and Abilities related to weather or terrain cannot be used here.
For instance, moves like Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Hail, Drought, Earthquake, and Abilities tied to weather conditions are restricted, which is currently one of the significant limitations of the Battle Tower.
If these restrictions weren't in place, the Battle Tower likely wouldn't have been established in Ruby City. Most Trainers here are intermediate level or below, making the use of weather-related moves relatively uncommon.
Kalia followed Manager Gus into Room 3 on the fifth floor, and he reminded her, "The challenger will arrive shortly. After the battle, don't forget to visit the adjacent room for restoring your Pokemon's condition."
"Understood," Kalia replied.
Entering the room, she found it spacious, even larger than a standard battlefield—ample space where even a Gyarados wouldn't feel cramped.
Suddenly, the door ahead opened, revealing a Trainer—the current challenger—who emerged from the entrance designated for challengers.
"Huh, seems like a new floor guardian; I've never seen this face before." The Trainer was a young adult, clearly surprised upon seeing Kalia.
Many Trainers frequently visited the Battle Tower to challenge its floors, so most challengers and floor guardians knew each other well. Encountering someone unfamiliar naturally piqued their interest.
A new floor guardian meant a fresh Trainer with new Pokemon. With some luck, if one encountered a type disadvantage, they could secure multiple victories quickly and advance to the next level.
Even if a Trainer lacked sufficient strength and eventually dropped back down after reaching the sixth floor, only to re-challenge later, it still provided bragging rights worth boasting about.
Each room within the Battle Tower had a referee, but instead of human officials, they were mechanical referees. Considering the vast number of rooms in the Battle Tower, it would be impractical to have enough human referees for all battles.
Becoming a qualified referee is no easy task; one must not only be a Trainer with extensive knowledge of Pokemon but also possess impeccable credibility. Many gyms even lack designated referees.
"Both Trainers, please send out your Pokemon," echoed the robotic voice, cold and distinct.
Kalia positioned herself on the opposite side of the battlefield, her expression serious. This was her first challenge as a floor guardian at the Battle Tower, and she was determined to defend her position successfully.
Facing an unknown opponent's strength and unfamiliar Pokemon truly tests a Trainer's capabilities.
"Go, Charmeleon!"
Kalia chose to lead with Charmeleon since she only had two Pokemon available. Grovyle currently held a two-star Red Star rank, while Charmeleon had achieved a two-star Silver Star rank.
Her strategy involved deploying Charmeleon initially, then strategically bringing in Grovyle when opportunities arose, leveraging its speed advantage and type effectiveness during combat.
"Go, Drifblim!" The challenger tossed out his Poké Ball, revealing a purple balloon-like Pokémon—the distinctly Ghost and Flying-type Drifblim.
Upon emerging from the Poké Ball, Lian found himself on a vast battlefield. If not for hearing the release command inside the ball, he might have thought he'd been transported to another location. The world's technology was truly impressive.
As Lian noticed his opponent was a Drifblim, he recognized its high base stats, particularly focused on Stamina with an impressive value of 150.
Realizing he hadn't utilized today's combat rating yet, Lian eyed the Drifblim intently. Defeating this Pokémon would be highly advantageous.
After sending out Charmeleon, Kalia quickly assessed her opponent's Pokémon and commanded, "Charmeleon, use Hidden Power."
Kalia understood Drifblim's attributes well; she was familiar with most Pokémon and made it a habit to stay updated about new ones—a crucial trait for any Trainer.
The advantage of having diverse moves at their disposal is the ability to counter opponents effectively based on their Pokémon types.
The young challenger also issued his command, momentarily taken aback by Kalia's choice of Charmeleon for this match. Clearly, Charmeleon seemed outmatched on the fifth floor.
"Drifblim, use Shadow Ball." The young Trainer's expression relaxed, wondering if the Battle Tower made a mistake. Encountering a Charmeleon at the fifth-floor arena was unexpected, indicating a potential opportunity for multiple consecutive victories today.
Meanwhile, Lian felt an itch to try out Flamethrower. Kalia wasn't yet aware that he had learned this move, but she would find out eventually, so there was no harm in using it now.
Considering Kalia visited the Battle Tower daily and typically headed straight to the library afterward to study, there were limited chances to showcase his abilities.
If not used here, future battles might become increasingly challenging without relying on Flamethrower, which could be quite disadvantageous.
The challengers on the fifth floor were exceptionally strong. Even the first battle encountered a Drifblim, whose base stats, although not surpassing 500, were still formidable.
By defeating over ten such Pokemon daily, Lian estimated he could level up within one or two days—an opportunity not to be missed.
Standing firm, Lian concentrated fire energy within his body, causing his cheeks to puff out as he aimed at the airborne Drifblim, ready to unleash Flamethrower.
Flamethrower requires a significant amount of Fire-type energy and possesses immense power. Lian didn't rush its release; although his proficiency was sufficient, it had been granted by the system.
"Charmeleon?" Kalia felt puzzled. The Charmeleon's move seemed off—why did it suddenly inflate its cheeks? Was it trying to be cute?
Meanwhile, the Drifblim had already launched Shadow Ball, a potent Ghost-Type Special Attack considered a signature move for Ghost Types, with considerable strength.
A black shadow, formed from concentrated Ghost-Type energy, detached from the Drifblim and swiftly headed straight towards Lian.
At this stage of power, Pokemon typically have high mastery over their moves due to extensive battle experience.
Facing the Shadow Ball, Lian opened his mouth, and with a loud roar, a fierce burst of scorching flames erupted from it, instantly raising the room's temperature.
The torrential flame resembled a fiery dragon, continuously shooting towards Drifblim and colliding intensely with the Shadow Ball.
With a resounding boom,
the Shadow Ball released by Drifblim crumbled and dispersed immediately.
This was a clear demonstration of a significant power disparity; Lian's Flamethrower clearly surpassed Drifblim's Shadow Ball move in strength.
After disintegrating the Shadow Ball, the blazing flames continued unabated towards Drifblim, striking its body relentlessly and sending it flying.
"Flamethrower?!" Kalia exclaimed, not startled but delighted. Once a Fire-type Pokémon learns Flamethrower, its combat capability significantly increases.
The young Trainer, however, looked bewildered. Weren't they expecting Hidden Power? Even if it were a Fire-Type Hidden Power, shouldn't it look different?
It dawned on him that while encountering a Charmeleon capable of Flamethrower wasn't surprising, its sheer power surpassing Drifblim's Shadow Ball explained why this Pokémon was placed on the fifth floor.
At this moment, any sense of luck vanished for the young Trainer. It became apparent that the Battle Tower would never mismatch Trainers and Pokémon based on their capabilities; he had been too careless.
