A week later, the two offices of PixelPioneers Studio had been renovated. At the same time, the sales of Binding of Isaac officially broke through the 800,000 mark, but it had begun to decline, falling to third place on the official game platform's daily sales list, with the top two spots occupied by two new releases from Moondustries.
"Why so much!" In the rental house, John was arranging his resume. He had met several people he was optimistic about during the interview process. Hearing Luna, who was sleeping in bed, angrily pat the futon, he looked up.
"What's wrong?" John asked, a bit puzzled.
"These people are too good! They are copying our game ideas and criticizing us." Luna's eyes were a bit red as she spoke indignantly.
John glanced over and noticed the original Binding of Isaac game community, where a large number of people were exposing which creators copied their games. The games from Gemtechs, Moondustries, and Essence also included elements from Binding of Isaac, as well as the new works from Mercury Studio and Christian Martel.
Not only the game community of Binding of Isaac but several other games, especially the three major games, were also being criticized.
Luna, as one of the first people to play Binding of Isaac, often promoted the game. By the way, John had given her some tricks and strategies in the Binding of Isaac community. Luna had also posted about the plagiarism and was getting criticized.
"Ignore them, they're just trolls. Maybe there are even people stirring up both sides, criticizing Binding of Isaac and then turning around to criticize the three majors and other game creators. Wait for me to contact Social Tap and see if they can handle such a big stir." John comforted Luna.
"Okay..."
Sitting on the bed and thinking about it, John took the notebook from Luna's lap and logged in to his social platform public account.
"Do you want to criticize them for me?" Luna asked excitedly.
"Don't make trouble, I'm just going to express my opinion and cool things down." John looked at Luna with a smile.
"That's right." Luna expressed her disappointment.
"Relax, look at who criticized you. I'll write some software and create a few more small accounts to criticize them back. And Social Tap should have a Binding of Isaac community platform management account. I'll ask them for authorization to mute some users." John said with a smile, squeezing Luna's face.
As for whether this is ethical or not, or the issue of abusing permissions, John dismissed the thought. People were already insulting them; quality was not the priority.
Hearing this, Luna's expression instantly brightened. She picked up her phone and logged onto the community platform to start reading the speech records.
Watching Luna staring at her phone with a smile, John turned his attention back to the official platform. His account had been officially certified. Although Binding of Isaac was popular, as a game developer, he didn't have much visibility, with only about 80,000 fans. However, they were real fans, not bots.
"The gameplay is welcome, because the game is only constantly innovated, and it can bring a more interesting experience to the player. I very much welcome someone to learn from and use the random gameplay in Binding of Isaac. Of course, if you have a thick skin, just change the texture, then the content is still the content of Binding of Isaac. After all, who let Binding of Isaac pass the creative protection period? As for plagiarism in some games that are too obvious, I don't know if I can write a lawyer letter to warn them."
John posted a message on the social platform, then he didn't plan to manage this matter further. However, John underestimated his influence or the influence of the Binding of Isaac.
After this message was sent out, it was quickly picked up by some self-media reporters who had been monitoring John's activities.
The headlines read: 'Breaking New-! Binding of Isaac game makers openly stated that some plagiarism games should not be too excessive!' 'Shocking-! The creator of Binding of Isaac has indicated that he will prosecute plagiarists.'
Anyway, these titles were crafted to attract attention. As for what John had said before, they were subconsciously ignored. How can one get a buzz and flow without sensationalism?
These were articles published by smaller media outlets, but mainstream game media like Starry Sky expressed the issue objectively, mixing in the industry's views on learning from game ideas. However, ordinary players didn't care about that much and started quarreling online.
"These cheap games copied Binding of Isaac, by just changing the texture!"
"Oh, a new game with a different texture? I should have studied game design too. No need to develop any new ideas, just copy what's hot!"
"Do you think this random element gameplay is unique to Binding of Isaac?"
"I haven't played this game, but from an objective standpoint, random element games have been around for over many years, Binding of Isaac wasn't even thought of back then. Different game values and backgrounds? Plagiarism?"
"Here comes the troll again, criticizing without playing the game first!"
"Brother, let it go..."
People who liked Binding of Isaac thought that the random elements in these new games were all copied from Binding of Isaac. Passersby who had never played Binding of Isaac or didn't like it felt the need to comment and argue, escalating the situation.
In Mercury Studio, Martel and Malcolm had a headache watching the online drama.
"If we say that we also need to add random element gameplay, what kind of uproar will it cause?" Malcolm said, troubled.
There had already been significant drama recently. Messages like "Mercury Studio is going downhill" and "Binding of Isaac topped the official platform's daily sales list" were everywhere. But now, with a sudden influx of topics about the Binding of Isaac, it was causing even more trouble.
"Traditional turn-based JRPG is no longer the mainstream RPG. For small and medium-sized games, gameplay and creativity are key. Random elements are a great idea. If we can incorporate them, it would enhance the experience. However, the project has already been developed, so we can't hide it. Let's contact the other party to see if we can get authorization for a proper name. If their demands are too high, we'll ignore them." Martel said after shaking his head and thinking about it.
"OK, I'll get someone on it immediately." Malcolm nodded, feeling a bit nostalgic.
Martel originally built his reputation on JRPGs. In the indie game circle, he was a top name in JRPG games, but now he admits it's not the JRPG era anymore. Has the era of JRPG passed?
Malcolm couldn't help but remember his childhood, sneaking out to the arcade to play RPG games, checking strategies during the day, and playing at night. Although the RPG games back then were graphically crude, those were fond memories of youth.
