Chapter 5: Chapter Five - First year
- How hard is it to make an amulet that scares off muggles? - Petunia asked.
The couple was in the farthest area of the library and he casted a silencing spell.
- Why do you want one, I know your relationship with your parents isn't very good, but do you think they'd do anything?
- Not for me but for Severus his father has become more and more abusive and his mother does nothing to stop it.
- I could have one ready before the end of the semester.
They were in the last semester and the exams were coming up.
Petunia was comfortable because she knew she would do well in the exams she knew all the spells and was always rereading the books she had a general idea of what would be on the exams, and she knew that the grades of the first-year would not influence the O.W.L.s.
But Eloise did not seem to agree because the girl was obsessed with getting O's in all subjects, Petunia saw no point in getting top marks in all subjects.
She was confident in all subjects except transfiguration because for some reason she couldn't transfigure living things, her cups always had hair no matter what she did, and the hedgehogs always kept a floral pattern, fortunately, she wasn't the only one as many students had difficulties in the subject it was frustrating to be bad at something you put so much effort into she would try hard to get an A in the subject but nothing more.
In charms, she was comfortable, because she couldn't learn it at first, but she always managed with practice, and by learning the spell that changes the color, Petunia can change her clothes since unfortunately, Margaret tends to buy fabrics in colors that favor Lili, luckily wizards don't seem to care about colors since the principal himself seems to like the combination of purple and lime green very much.
Potions were a subject of constant attention, she hadn't decided if she liked it or not but cutting, kneading, and following the instructions to the letter was easier than making spells or transfiguring something, she could even deliver perfect potions.
Astronomy was about good memorization and being careful not to fall asleep in class or drop the telescope, and history of magic was more drowsy than astronomy and the class took place at night, the professor of history was a ghost which should have been cool but Professor Binns was so boring that he could put most of the students to sleep, she was tempted to do the same but used the time to do her homework.
Petunia was one of the best students in herbology, and so she was asked to help her ''friends'' she doesn't know for sure, Eloise Ducam came from a notorious family of healers, and she intended to follow the same path, Gwen aimed to become a Quidditch player, Petunia didn't understand the sport very well and preferred not to give an opinion, Pandora was the one she spent the most time with, she reminded her of her students who were young mystics, the two of them could spend hours together studying, and she never asked where she was, she had a strange relationship with Xenophilius, and it was likely that they would be dating in a few years.
Although they were only four, she wished she could be the same age as Aster, the two of them could be friends but not boyfriends and when she was finally old enough, he would have graduated, she knew he thought the same.
.
Over the year, Petunia was very glad that she hadn't insisted on going to Gryffindor since it was the most volatile house or going to Slytherin since she realized that half-bloods weren't treated very well and that was because they were rich, she didn't even want to know what it was like for a poor half-blood or a muggleborn.
Unfortunately, she remembered that Severus wanted to go to Slytherin like his mother, she shuddered at the thought of Severus, a traumatized boy who wanted people to respect him, going to a house where the only way he would get respect was from the family he belonged to, and they would be a bad influence on him if Severus managed to fit in, she knew that not all Slytherins were like that, but she knew that this was the worst house for Severus to go to, she would have to convince him to go to Ravenclaw, since Gryffindor and Hufflepuff were not options for him.
Petunia took her final exams and got an O in Herbology, an A in Transfiguration and Defense, and an E in the rest of her subjects. She was proud of her grades. Petunia enjoyed studying at Hogwarts. She had a very comfortable room, good food, and peace, she didn't have to do housework, and she didn't have to be near her parents. She could dedicate herself to her studies and knit and sew.
The last few days of school were good, she read a lot of interesting books and under Gwen's guidance she played Quidditch as a chaser, it was nice to fly on a broomstick, but she had no interest in joining the team.
Before boarding the train, Aster gave her a box containing two small, discreet necklaces that would draw attention away from Muggles, so that they would always forget and not want to be near anyone who wore them, made by one of Aster's older brothers, she hadn't thought about it but having something to get away from them would be useful.
She knew that the two of them would only ignore her, but she wanted to be prepared if the worst happened.
Severus came from an abusive home, and going to Slytherin during the war didn't help one bit.
