Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Smoking, Drinking, and Tattoos
Yamato was brimming with excitement, enthusiastically showing off her collection of jewelry to Black Maria.
Nearby, the siblings Ulti and Page One were perched atop a towering ten-meter elephant, curiously taking in the sights of Onigashima. Behind them, a group of fish-men sat atop a variety of strange, dinosaur-like mounts, trailing behind Rim, who led the procession.
At the very back, dozens of towering elephants, each several meters tall, slowly hauled heavy cargo toward Onigashima. These elephants, saved over the years by Yamato and Black Maria from Jack's clutches, had formed a herd of over a hundred members. Surprisingly intelligent, they easily followed simple commands and had become the primary labor force for transport. As for the dinosaurs, Kaido and King had apparently captured them from who-knows-where, repurposing them as mounts.
Onigashima, a mid-sized island, was rich in resources but surrounded by mountains. While powerhouses like Jack could travel across it in a matter of hours, it was a time-consuming journey for regular pirates. As the crew expanded and resources grew, transportation became a necessity. Now, anything that could be used was put to use.
The elephants and other beasts thrived in Onigashima's environment, which provided the necessary conditions for keeping them. Halfway through their journey, Rim and the fish-men split off with a portion of the supplies, while Yamato and Black Maria continued forward with the elephants. Ulti and her brother soon dozed off atop a pile of crates, while Master jumped down to chat with Yamato and Maria.
From afar, Jack stood outside the courtyard, his eyes glued to the massive lead elephant. He licked his lips instinctively.
"This guy… Is it just me, or has it mutated? A few short years, and Yamato's feeding has turned it into this."
He smirked, his gaze lingering. "With an elephant this big, the meat must be incredible."
A low, anxious trumpet broke his train of thought. The lead elephant stopped abruptly, shuffling nervously. Its distress woke Ulti and her brother, who sat up, tense and alert.
Yamato quickly realized the source of the commotion. Turning to the distant figure of Jack, she yelled, "Hey! You big dumb elephant! Move! You're scaring my elephants!"
"Humph, whatever," Jack scoffed, rolling his eyes. He turned and strutted away with an exaggerated swagger.
The elephant leader calmed down, resuming its steady pace toward the towering courtyard ahead. Yamato burst into a grin as they arrived.
"Jaki! Come out and look at all the stuff Jack brought us!"
"Jaki? Hey! Are you still asleep?"
She called out a few more times but received no reply—not even snoring. Frowning, she headed into the house, muttering, "Jaki…"
Inside, Jaki lay sprawled on the ground, his four hooves sticking straight up. His head was adorned with a cartoonishly exaggerated stack of lumps, so pronounced that Yamato couldn't help but think of the Buddha Jack had once described to her.
"Jack!"
Hearing Yamato's furious roar behind him, Jack bolted without a second thought.
Jack had barely settled back on Onigashima when Kaido summoned him to the red-light district. Surrounded by leopard-print-clad aunties, Kaido waved them off as Jack arrived, visibly annoyed.
"Oi, brat!"
The women quickly filed out. Once they were gone, Kaido turned to Jack, his expression serious.
"Jack, if I'm not mistaken, your Devil Fruit is the Zoan-type Mammoth Fruit, correct?"
Jack blinked. "Kaido-sama, what kind of dumb question is that?"
"Good, so I'm not mistaken. Since it's the Mammoth Fruit, I didn't care about your love for elephant meat in the past." Kaido's gaze sharpened. "But tell me—how are you producing so much ivory? And why the hell are you selling mammoth tusks?"
He tossed a bank card and receipt at Jack. Jack picked them up, recognizing Donquixote Family stamps on the paperwork detailing the sale of processed ivory.
"Huh… Well, damn. Guess I'm rich now."
"Jack!" Kaido barked, interrupting his thoughts. "I don't know how you've managed to fixate your ability like this, but stop mass-producing ivory. Too much supply, and the price drops. The batch you've already brought back is more than enough."
Kaido sighed. "Also, rest up while you can. I don't need to tell you what's coming next, do I?"
Jack scratched his head, a sheepish grin forming. "Uh… when I make it to All-Star, do I have to take over Kuri? Can I stay here instead?"
"Scram!"
"Yes, sir!" Jack replied cheerfully, dodging the half-empty bottle Kaido threw at him as he left.
That night, Jack joined Yamato and Black Maria for dinner, only to notice something that left him speechless: the two of them were puffing on smoking pipes, exhaling plumes of smoke like seasoned smokers.
"Seriously?!" Jack thought, watching them. "Smoking pipes now? Have you missed me so much that you've picked up bad habits?"
In fairness, smoking in this world posed little risk, and with Master around to purify their bodies occasionally, Jack saw no reason to intervene. Not that he could. If he tried, he'd probably just get beaten up. These two had grown ridiculously strong under Kaido and King's training. Jack had already taken a beating earlier in the day, no point asking for more.
Still, being home had its perks, and Jack decided to treat himself a little. His gaze wandered to Yamato, but he quickly looked away.
"Forget it. Her muscles are bigger than mine. Not to mention her height. I'm not looking to commit a crime."
His eyes then shifted to Black Maria. She noticed, smirking as she puffed out her chest and beckoned him with a curled finger.
"You little minx," Jack thought, gulping. "I'm definitely getting you drunk tonight."
Hours later, despite his best efforts, neither Black Maria nor Yamato showed any signs of intoxication. In fact, Yamato was casually downing penalty shots whenever she lost a game.
Frustrated, Jack gave up and shamelessly bunked in the room next to theirs. As he lay in bed, unable to sleep, his Observation Haki kicked in. He sensed movement next door.
"Huh? What are they doing at this hour?" Jack muttered. His curiosity piqued as he focused. The sound of splashing water reached his ears. His body stiffened, certain thoughts flooding his mind.
"No way… Bathing in the middle of the night without inviting me? Rude!"
Quietly, Jack slipped out of bed and crept toward the bathroom. Using his Haki to confirm that only Yamato and Black Maria were inside, he peeked through the door.
"Whoa… so smooth… so white…" His eyes widened. "Wait, is that… a tattoo?"
On Black Maria's back was a delicate tattoo in pink ink that read "女難" (Femme Fatale), framed by floral designs.
"You've got to be kidding me. Smoking, drinking, and tattoos?! What's next, a biker gang?"
Before Jack could contemplate further, Black Maria and Yamato turned, wrapped in towels and glaring daggers at him. Maria transformed into her wolf spider form, ensnaring him in webbing before he could flee.
"Heh, Yamato, tonight I'll show you exactly how to deal with peeping toms!" Maria said, cracking her knuckles.
"Mmmph!"
Yamato nodded in agreement, leaving the bathroom and returning moments later with her massive kanabo. She kicked Jack in the face and raised the weapon high.
"Let's see if you scream this time, pervert!"
"Wait! Maria's just teasing! You're trying to kill me!" Jack screamed internally. "And seriously, what's with the sweaty feet?!"
