Chapter 97: Roger’s Invitation
"BIG MOM Pirates?"
Hearing that the Road Poneglyph was in the hands of Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom, Roger's expression immediately became serious.
"Josie, are you sure? You're not just trying to set me up to clash with Big Mom's crew, are you?"
"Do you think I have any reason to lie to you? What benefit would I get from pushing you into a fight with the Big Mom Pirates?"
Jon's face showed disdain, as if Roger had insulted him, looking visibly displeased.
But in reality, this was exactly his plan—one he had carefully thought through before revealing the secret of the Final Island.
It was purely coincidental that he had once suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Charlotte Linlin, nearly losing everything. The hatred still burned in his heart, but at the moment, he lacked the strength to seek revenge. Without returning to a Marine base, he had no means of retaliation.
Then, by sheer misfortune, he was captured by the Roger Pirates.
Seizing the opportunity, he crafted a plan—to use the Final Island's secret to lure Roger into a conflict with the Big Mom Pirates.
No matter who won, Jon would profit.
And amidst the chaos, he would find an opportunity to escape from the Oro Jackson.
This was Jon's plan, and he was 100% certain that Roger would take the bait.
After all, if Roger didn't know about the Road Poneglyphs, that would be one thing.
But now that he did, there was no way he could resist.
Roger's sharp eyes flickered with thought. He wasn't entirely convinced by Jon's words, so he asked again:
"Apart from the one in Big Mom's hands, what about the other three Road Poneglyphs?"
Jon had some idea where the other Road Poneglyphs were, but he had no intention of revealing that.
Giving Roger one was already enough.
If he shared too much, Roger might start rethinking his approach—something Jon wanted to avoid.
"I only know about this one. If you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do."
Roger was silent for a long time. Then he said, "I believe you. But what I don't understand is—how do you know that Big Mom has the Road Poneglyph?"
Jon replied, "It was deduced from Marine intelligence reports. Charlotte Linlin was once a crew member of the Rocks Pirates. The Marines have a lot of intel on her, and I happened to come across some records. Based on that, I concluded that the Road Poneglyph in her possession likely once belonged to Rocks."
This was a complete lie.
But by bringing up Rocks, Jon knew that Roger would be more inclined to believe it.
Sure enough, upon hearing this not-so-logical explanation, Roger fell into deep thought.
Back then, he had helped Garp defeat Rocks, so he understood exactly who Rocks was.
Like Roger, Rocks carried the Will of D. Technically, they could even be considered distant kin.
But the paths they chose were entirely different.
Rocks' ambition had stood in Roger's way, which was why Roger had ultimately chosen to aid the Marines in taking him down.
Having witnessed Rocks' overwhelming strength, it made sense that a Road Poneglyph originally belonging to Rocks would now be in Charlotte Linlin's possession.
As Roger continued to ponder, Jon's eyes flashed.
He suddenly asked, "I'm curious—what exactly is on this Final Island that makes it worth all this trouble? You don't seem like the type to set sail just for treasure."
Roger snapped out of his thoughts, surprised by Jon's question.
"You know so much about the Final Island, and yet you don't know what's there?"
"How the hell would I know?"
Jon scoffed.
In truth, even he didn't know what was on Laugh Tale.
The One Piece manga had never revealed it.
The most likely possibilities were:
The secrets of the Great Kingdom from 800 years ago.
The truth behind the World Government.
But honestly?
Neither of those interested Jon much.
History was history.
Now, if there was a legendary weapon or some ultimate power hidden there, that would be a different story.
But considering the way Roger's crew had reacted after reaching the Final Island, it didn't seem like that was the case.
Roger's expression suddenly became incredibly solemn.
"There lies hope—the buried history of the past, and the hope for the future."
Watching Roger speak like a prophet, Jon was speechless.
Dude, you haven't even been there yet. How can you be so sure?
"I've told you everything I know," Jon said. "Shouldn't you honor your promise and let me go?"
"Not yet."
"You're going back on your word?"
"This isn't about breaking a promise. It's about taking precautions. After all, I don't know for sure if what you said is true."
"So when exactly do you plan on letting me go? After you get the Road Poneglyph from Big Mom?"
Roger burst into laughter.
"Hahaha! Seems like you're finally starting to understand me. That's right—once I have that Road Poneglyph, I promise to let you go."
"Your promises mean nothing to me," Jon sneered.
But Roger just laughed carefreely.
"We've talked this long—we should have at least some level of trust by now. I believe in you, so you should believe in me too."
Jon remained silent.
There was nothing more to say.
He had never expected Roger to release him so easily.
Roger was a man of action. As soon as he learned that Charlotte Linlin might have a Road Poneglyph, he immediately began preparing for the mission.
In the blink of an eye, Jon had already been aboard the Oro Jackson for three days.
"Josie, are you sure you won't reconsider? Join my crew, and let's turn the world upside down together."
This was the umpteenth time in three days that Roger had invited Jon to join his pirate crew.
It wasn't just because Jon knew a lot.
Roger had also taken notice of Jon's abilities and strength.
After spending three days aboard the Oro Jackson, Jon had relaxed somewhat.
"I've told you a hundred times—it's not happening. And I don't get it. The world's doing just fine—why do you feel the need to turn it upside down?"
"Hah."
Roger suddenly burst into laughter.
"Kid, you can say that to fool the ignorant, but anyone with a shred of insight knows how corrupt and rotten this world truly is. Under the World Government's rule, it's nothing but darkness. It needs to change."
"So you want to be the one to start that change?" Jon asked.
Roger's face grew serious.
"I'm just doing what I must. It's my duty—my dream. Josie, there aren't many Marines like you. Instead of serving the World Government, why not join me in creating a new era?"
At this point, Roger wasn't aware that he was dying.
So, with all his passion and spirit, he truly believed he could change the world.
Jon shook his head.
One Piece had always romanticized pirates.
Relying on a pirate to reform the world was utterly ridiculous.
Roger had ambition, ideals, strength, and courage.
But the moment he chose the path of a pirate, he had sealed his fate.
Even if he weren't dying, he would never be the one to truly change the world.
Jon believed that Dragon's Revolutionary Army had a much better chance.
At least the Revolutionaries were a military organization with discipline and strategy.
If executed properly, they might truly stand a chance.
