Chapter 98: The Marines Take Action

"A new era?"

Jon looked at Roger with a meaningful gaze.

He knew very well that although Roger had earned the title of Pirate King while alive, he had never truly changed the world, let alone created a new era.

But just before his death, Roger did something incredible—single-handedly igniting the Great Pirate Era.

He had failed in life, only to succeed in death.

It was the perfect example of the saying: A person's death can be as weighty as Mount Tai or as light as a feather.

Roger's death had shaken the world like an earthquake.

Yet again, Roger's attempt to recruit Jon had failed. But Roger wasn't discouraged.

After all, good crew members weren't easy to find.

When he had first tried to recruit Rayleigh, he had used every trick in the book before finally succeeding.

The other crew members had been just as difficult to win over.

Only after he became famous did it become easier to recruit people—but even then, he only accepted those he truly approved of.

"You're way too arrogant! How dare you reject the captain so many times?!"

A red-nosed boy, who looked like a clown, held a few small knives between his fingers and shouted furiously at Jon.

"Oh? Bucky, are you planning to teach this kid a lesson for the captain?"

The surrounding pirates grinned and teased him.

Bucky was fuming.

Of course, he wasn't strong enough to do anything.

He was just irritated that Jon—a Marine, captured by their crew—was still so defiant.

And even worse, Roger didn't seem to mind at all.

Jon ignored Bucky.

Over the past few days, Bucky had been constantly trying to get his attention.

Even though he was just an apprentice, the kid was hyperactive—always running around, never staying still for more than a minute.

Compared to Bucky, the other apprentice, Shanks, was completely different.

Shanks was terrified of Jon.

Every time he saw him, he kept his distance.

The kid was smart—he knew that Jon probably hated him for exposing his identity.

So whenever he saw Jon, he avoided him.

Unfortunately for him, Bucky always dragged him along, leaving Shanks utterly frustrated.

While the crew joked around, Rayleigh spoke seriously to Roger.

"Roger, are you really planning to steal the Road Poneglyph from the Big Mom Pirates? You're just going to trust what that Marine told you?"

Roger replied, "He has no reason to lie to me. If he's telling the truth, then Big Mom definitely has the Road Poneglyph."

Rayleigh frowned.

"Big Mom isn't just some random pirate. She's one of the strongest. The Road Poneglyph is extremely important—she'll have it locked away in the most secure location. Stealing it won't be easy."

Roger grinned.

"If it were easy, it wouldn't be fun. Everything we're doing is incredibly difficult—this is just the beginning.

At least now, we have a goal.

Unlike before, when we were just wandering around aimlessly."

For Roger, having a goal was everything.

He hated pointless searching.

"We don't even need to steal the entire Poneglyph," Roger added. "I can just copy it with my ability."

Rayleigh sighed.

"If we can avoid fighting the Big Mom Pirates, we should. That woman is a maniac."

Roger and Rayleigh weren't afraid of Charlotte Linlin.

But not wanting to fight didn't mean they couldn't.

Back when they had clashed with the Rocks Pirates, they had witnessed firsthand how terrifying Charlotte Linlin could be.

If it wasn't absolutely necessary, Rayleigh didn't want to battle her.

Roger laughed.

"Then we'll steal it quietly, without anyone noticing."

"If only it were that simple…"

Rayleigh shook his head.

It didn't matter how difficult a task was—once Roger decided to do something, he made it sound easy.

And the worst part?

Everyone around him always ended up believing in him.

With Roger's orders, the Roger Pirates began heading toward Big Mom's territory to execute their heist.

Everything was going exactly as Jon had planned.

He didn't know how things would unfold, but for now, everything was on track.

If the Roger Pirates and the Big Mom Pirates ended up fighting, that would be his best chance to escape.

After a few days on the Oro Jackson, Jon realized something.

Even though Roger treated him well, there were at least a few crew members watching him—24/7.

Even when he slept, he was being monitored.

Because of this, Jon hadn't made any moves yet.

Against the mighty Roger Pirates, he knew he'd only get one shot at escaping.

It had to be at the perfect moment.

Meanwhile, Douglas Bullet, the rookie powerhouse, kept trying to pick a fight with Jon.

Jon ignored him every time.

A few times, Bullet got so pissed off that he nearly attacked, but Roger stepped in and shut him down.

Time passed quickly.

Before long, ten days had flown by.

During this time, Roger had been gathering intel on Big Mom's crew.

The Big Mom Pirates were nothing like ordinary pirate crews.

Roger had no intention of underestimating them.

Before making a move, he needed a solid plan.

Marine G1 Branch Base

Vice Admiral Tsuru frowned as she read the urgent telegram in her hands.

"When did this happen?"

Before her stood a Marine Commander.

This telegram had just been delivered to her.

"A few days ago. A patrol ship received a report from a merchant vessel.

The merchants claimed that the soldier mentioned in the report might be a high-ranking Marine.

Since you were already investigating the missing G-52 warship, and because this involves the Roger Pirates, we rushed to deliver it to you."

The G-52 warship was the ship Jon had been on before his capture.

Every ship leaving the Marine base was logged, and Jon's ship had been G-52.

"Understood. You may go."

After the Commander left, Tsuru's expression darkened.

"Josie… That must be Jon.

That kid really does have the luck of a cockroach.

But damn… his luck is awful too."

In such a short time, he had run into both Whitebeard and Roger—and now he was Roger's prisoner.

That was beyond bad luck.

"If Roger has captured Jon, he won't let him go easily.

I just hope Jon can hold out and—most importantly—keep his ability a secret."

Jon's food-creation ability was far too valuable to the Marines.

There was no way Tsuru would let pirates take him.

But getting Jon back from Roger?

That was going to be extremely difficult.

"The only one who can pull this off is Garp.

But Garp is currently fighting Shiki with Sengoku.

And if Garp makes a move, Roger's crew will realize how important Jon is—making the rescue even harder."

Even with Tsuru's intelligence, she couldn't think of an easy solution.

The New World was in chaos, and the Roger Pirates were an incredibly tricky enemy.

"If Roger hasn't killed Jon yet, that means there's still a chance.

For now, I'll talk to Garp—we need to track the Roger Pirates' movements before making any decisions."

Jon was someone Tsuru believed in.

After years of knowing him, she had come to see him as a nephew.

And she wasn't about to let Roger take him away.
