Chapter 5: Chapter 5: General Zephyr
The warship quickly approached the island.
Soon, it arrived at a crescent-shaped harbor.
In front of the harbor, rows of warships were docked.
At least a dozen ships could be seen at a glance, showcasing the military strength of the Navy Headquarters.
The warship came to a halt at the harbor.
Rear Admiral Noville immediately shouted, "Everyone, grab your belongings and disembark immediately."
It was just past eight in the morning.
Jon followed everyone off the ship.
Along the way, he noticed that there were many soldiers at the Navy Headquarters base.
Although numerous, they moved and conducted their duties in an orderly fashion.
The harbor area, in particular, was bustling.
Warships were constantly coming and going, with many navy soldiers maintaining order at the port.
As it was Jon's first time at Navy Headquarters, he silently followed the large group without saying a word.
He did exactly what he was told, avoiding anything he wasn't instructed to do.
"Everyone, follow me immediately."
At the command, Noville led Jon and the group away from the harbor and towards the base.
After passing through various clusters of buildings, they arrived at a large square.
This square was massive, covering at least 100,000 square meters.
Jon had never seen such a large training ground.
It was equipped with numerous facilities, clearly intended for navy soldiers' training, and the square was divided into several areas.
Jon and his group were brought to one of these areas.
Here, many people were already standing.
Most of them wore navy uniforms, though some were in civilian clothes.
They stood together, but it was clear they didn't share the same style, likely indicating they were from different places.
With a little thought, it was easy to guess their identities.
They were probably recommended soldiers from various navy branches, just like them.
"Noville, this time, you're the slowest; we've been waiting for you for over an hour."
Several officers wearing navy justice cloaks smiled at Rear Admiral Noville, who was leading Jon's group.
Noville greeted the other officers with a smile, while Jon and the others were directed to stand with the rest.
After standing in place, Jon noticed that everyone else stood upright, eyes forward.
He did the same, maintaining composure and discreetly observing those around him.
Not long after, a group of people suddenly arrived.
At the front was a tall, muscular man with short purple hair, dressed in a white suit and a navy justice cloak.
"Admiral Zephyr!"
As soon as this man appeared, Noville, along with the other navy officers and soldiers nearby, respectfully addressed him.
"So, that's Zephyr?"
Jon's pupils contracted as he fixed his gaze on the purple-haired man, feeling a surge of excitement.
This was a Navy Admiral, a true Admiral, one of the strongest standing at the pinnacle of the Navy.
Having watched *One Piece*, Jon knew a lot about Zephyr.
This Navy Admiral was nothing short of a legendary figure.
Seeing him in person now, to be honest, was quite thrilling.
Zephyr nodded toward the other navy officers and soldiers, then walked to the front of the new recruits standing in a row.
Recently, Zephyr's mood had been gloomy, but looking at the young faces in front of him suddenly lifted his spirits.
Though known as the "non-lethal" Admiral, Zephyr was a man who firmly believed in the Navy's justice.
He never took the lives of pirates, yet he was uncompromising when it came to capturing them.
However, this year, his family—his wife and children—had been killed by pirates.
This tragedy left him deeply disappointed with the Navy.
He was an Admiral, after all.
For an Admiral's family to be murdered—what a colossal failure of the system!
Because of this, Zephyr harbored resentment toward Navy Headquarters and wanted to resign.
It was only through the persuasion of Kong and Sengoku that he chose to trust the Navy again, keeping his Admiral rank but transitioning to become the Chief Instructor.
Given Zephyr's skills and abilities, the entire Navy had confidence in him as an instructor, and he was immediately made the Chief Instructor.
They even selected the finest young talents from the latest batch of navy recruits for him to train.
"Since you've come here, it means you know what's coming next."
Zephyr, without any airs, got straight to the point.
"In the coming days, I'll be overseeing your evaluations."
"A few days from now, I'll choose the best among you for a year-long training program."
"To become my student, how you perform in the coming days will be critical."
"I'm not looking for the strongest; I'm looking for those with the best overall qualities."
"So, even a small detail could determine your fate."
"Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir."
"Yes, sir."
...
Since it was their first gathering, the soldiers' responses were scattered, irregular, and disorganized.
Zephyr's face darkened, and he asked again sharply, "Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir!"
...
...
After repeating it several times, everyone finally responded in unison.
Zephyr nodded in satisfaction, his expression stern.
"I haven't looked at any of your records."
"Some of you may have notable achievements, exceptional talent, or special abilities."
"But let me tell you this: regardless of who you were before, you all have the same identity here."
"From now on, you're all recruits, and I am your instructor."
"There's only one thing you need to do."
"Obey. Obey my orders."
"Whatever I tell you to do, you will do it, even if it seems wrong."
"If you have objections, raise them with me afterward."
"Understood?"
"Yes, sir!"
Their response was finally united.
For these soldiers, following orders wasn't an issue; they were all military men, and obedience was fundamental.
"Today, for many of you, it's your first time at Navy Headquarters."
"The first lesson I'm going to teach you is just two words."
"Justice!"
"Justice, though only two words, has always been my belief and that of the entire Navy."
"Many of you may have joined the Navy with personal goals."
"But no matter your previous purpose, remember my words."
"Before you do anything, uphold justice."
"Keep justice in your hearts, for only then can you be worthy navy soldiers."
Although the loss of his family dealt a heavy blow to Zephyr, he hadn't forgotten his sense of justice.
Now that he was an instructor, he felt the most important lesson he could teach was the meaning of justice.
Justice was the Navy's motto, a truth evident from the "justice" cloaks they wore.
Though interpretations of justice varied, most navy officers were soldiers of conviction.
Just as Jon thought Zephyr was about to go on at length, the Admiral abruptly stopped, changing his tone.
"Now, everyone, listen to my command."
"Run around this square carrying a hundred-kilogram load."
"Remember, I want you to run until you can no longer stand."
Upon hearing this, many looked at each other in surprise, evidently not expecting Zephyr to switch gears so suddenly.
One moment, he was talking about ideals, and the next, he was ordering them to run.
But while some hesitated, others obeyed.
A tall man, over two meters, wearing a navy hat, a red shirt, and carrying a long sword, stepped forward.
With a cold expression, he picked up a weight and began jogging.
With a leader setting the example, the others quickly followed suit, grabbing weights and starting to run.
