Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Naval Headquarters
"Whoo!"
Jon exhaled softly, calming himself down. He had experience in this; during his training in Observation Haki, he had always kept a calm mind. When it came to controlling his emotions, he was quite skilled.
Under Jon's control, two seeds appeared in the palms of his hands and began to grow rapidly, eventually turning into two small green plants about the length of a finger. They looked somewhat like small succulent plants he had seen before.
"So, it's really a plant… could this Devil Fruit I ate actually be a plant-based ability that lets me create plants and control their growth?"
It seemed clear he could indeed produce plant seeds and speed up their growth. This wasn't something that made sense through ordinary logic—it was simply the mysterious nature of Devil Fruit powers.
The ability was unique, but if that were all it could do, then it wasn't particularly powerful. He wondered about its potential growth, though.
Thinking of other similar abilities, Jon's mind went to the world of Naruto and its Wood Style, a powerful ability used by Hashirama Senju, which turned trees into devastating attacks.
"If I can create them, I wonder if I can also remove them."
Gazing at the small green plants in his hand, Jon entertained the idea and tried to control them once again.
To his surprise, under his command, the two little green plants withered away rapidly, leaving only a pile of debris in his hands.
As he had hoped, he could not only grow the plants but also disintegrate them.
Jon felt a surge of excitement. Though he had only just acquired this power, he was convinced of its potential. This plant-based Devil Fruit would be incredibly valuable if he could learn to develop it properly.
The only question now was whether he could unlock that potential fully.
"Let's keep testing."
An hour later, Jon was slumped in his cabin, completely exhausted.
His small room was now overgrown with various plants he had created. Green vegetation filled half the room, while the rest featured an assortment of other plants: flowers, grasses, trees—he had even managed to grow a small tree almost a meter tall.
Everything in the room had been created through Jon's ability, as he had been using it non-stop for more than an hour until he was finally out of stamina.
There was one downside, though: the tallest tree he could produce was about a meter high, and it took all his energy.
A meter-high tree wasn't going to be very intimidating in a fight.
If someone else had this power, they might be disappointed. But Jon wasn't the type to give up so easily.
After all, this was just his first time trying out the ability after eating the Devil Fruit. Reaching this level on his first attempt was more than he had anticipated.
Not every Devil Fruit was as powerful right out of the gate as the Logia types. Most Devil Fruits began as relatively weak powers and only revealed their true potential through extensive practice.
Think about the Rubber-Rubber Fruit. At first glance, its abilities were quite plain, but in Luffy's hands, the power was pushed to unbelievable limits. Who could have imagined the Fruit would develop to that extent?
So even though Jon's Devil Fruit didn't yet seem particularly strong, he didn't feel discouraged at all.
When it came to creativity, he was confident he could match, if not exceed, the people native to this world.
Before entering Marine Headquarters, Jon noticed the remaining portion of the Devil Fruit he hadn't eaten had already begun to rot, which surprised him greatly.
His father had hidden it for three years without it spoiling, yet it began to rot almost immediately after Jon had taken a bite. Devil Fruits seemed to have this unique property, which Jon found fascinating.
Just then, the sound of a horn echoed through the ship, and Jon's expression changed. He quickly dressed in his uniform and stepped out of his room.
"Line up!"
On deck, Rear Admiral Noville stood with a stern expression, calling out to the soldiers as they assembled.
The order sent the South Sea soldiers into a scramble. They had come from different branches across the South Sea and were barely familiar with each other. Most didn't even know each other's names.
In the end, after a full minute, all thirty-six of them managed to line up by height.
"Look at your performance! Each of you was handpicked by your branches, and yet you can't even line up in formation. How do you expect to fight pirates like this? What makes you think you deserve to compete at Headquarters?"
Noville reprimanded them harshly, showing no mercy. Not one of them dared to protest; to everyone here, a Marine Headquarters Rear Admiral was the highest-ranking officer they had ever encountered.
The South Sea was vast, with far more than thirty branches. The reason only thirty-six soldiers had been selected was that some of the branches hadn't put anyone forward.
"We're about to arrive at Headquarters. If you want to be here a year from now, give it your all, because during the tests, the instructors will show no mercy."
Jon's ears perked up at this remark, catching an important implication in Noville's words.
In one year, he had said—meaning that, potentially, everyone who arrived would be given a chance to train for a full year. It wasn't quite the elimination process his father had anticipated.
The thought made sense. Even if the South Sea troops weren't as strong as those from the Grand Line, they had all been recommended, which meant they weren't without talent.
Relieved, Jon felt more confident now, knowing what to expect.
Marineford, Marine Headquarters!
The ship glided into the Headquarters' bay, and Jon gazed at the immense structure of Marine Headquarters with awe.
After a lifetime in the South Sea, seeing Marineford left him in shock at its grandeur.
Even from a distance, he could see the central fortress—the massive, towering walls, at least several stories high, with two enormous kanji characters for "Marine" carved into them, giving off an aura of solemnity.
Atop the towering walls stood an impressive multi-story building, and the entire structure combined was awe-inspiring and majestic.
Four high watchtowers surrounded the main fortress, each one flying a Marine flag, standing guard over Marine Headquarters.
Around the fortress were other buildings, not as tall as the main structure but scattered across the island, forming the sprawling Marine Headquarters base.
"So, this is Marine Headquarters."
The other soldiers from the South Sea, also seeing Headquarters for the first time, were equally stunned. Compared to this, their home branch bases looked like rural outposts.
Rear Admiral Noville smiled slightly, watching the soldiers' reactions. When he first arrived at Marine Headquarters, he'd been just as awestruck.
He had been lucky enough to remain at Headquarters and rise to his current rank.
As for the soldiers now on board, they might stay here temporarily, but for most of them, their future would involve being reassigned elsewhere.
