Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Akainu and Kizaru
"Ah, what a hassle. Just got here, and there's already no peace."
A lazy voice sounded not far away, and Jon, with his keen hearing, turned to see who was bold enough to speak this way.
In sight was a man also wearing a navy hat, a yellow shirt, with short ear-length hair. He was just as tall as the first person who had stepped forward, walking lazily toward the weights.
What caught Jon's attention was the man's distinct features: a laid-back demeanor, a face reminiscent of a monkey. Considering that this was the first batch of Zephyr's students, a familiar name flashed in Jon's mind.
"Is this guy Kizaru?"
Although doubtful, now was not the time to hesitate. Jon followed the others to the weights, picked up a 100-kilogram load, and strapped it on.
If this were his old world, carrying a 100-kilogram weight for a run would have made Jon curse out the instructor—this was practically a death sentence.
But in this world, 100 kilograms was nothing to a trained marine soldier. The physical capabilities of people here were remarkable; especially after training, their limits were shockingly high.
Take Jon himself, for example. At only seventeen years old, he could easily lift four to five hundred pounds, and he could even handle over a thousand. A 100-kilogram weight for running was child's play.
Following the main group, Jon jogged steadily, finally free to observe his fellow recruits.
Besides the man he suspected was Kizaru, Jon was also deeply impressed by the first man who stepped forward. His stern look and fierce aura perfectly matched the image of the future Admiral Akainu.
That man was very likely the future admiral and successor to Sengoku as Fleet Admiral—Akainu, Sakazuki.
"According to the One Piece manga, Akainu and Kizaru were already monsters among their peers after joining the marines. I wonder if they're already Devil Fruit users at this point."
Although Jon knew Akainu and Kizaru were in the same batch as him, he couldn't be sure if they were already Devil Fruit users. However, he suspected it was more likely they had the powers.
Everyone began running, with each lap around the vast square being at least 10,000 meters. But for marines with impressive physical fitness, running until they couldn't stand was going to take some time.
Zephyr stood with his deputy, Freeman, along with a few other soldiers nearby. Officers like Rear Admiral Norville had already left after completing their mission of escorting the recruits.
Although the Marine Headquarters has a military academy, it has mainly been a facility to train new soldiers, with the highest rank being a Rear Admiral. Now, with Zephyr's arrival, he was the most senior officer there.
Because Zephyr had transferred from the frontlines, his previous lieutenant, a Vice Admiral, hadn't joined him, and now he had Freeman, a seasoned Brigadier General, as his deputy instructor.
"Freeman, you should have reviewed the new recruits' profiles, right?" Zephyr asked his lieutenant.
Freeman nodded, responding, "Yes, I've reviewed all of them. There are a total of 196 recruits: 136 from the Four Seas and the remaining 60 from the branches and headquarters along the Grand Line."
Zephyr asked further, "Based on what you've read, are there any standouts among them?"
Freeman's face lit up with excitement. "Admiral Zephyr, in all my years of instructing, I've never seen a batch of students as talented as this one. There are so many outstanding recruits."
Freeman, older than Zephyr by a few years, had been a teaching officer for over a decade, instructing many batches of new soldiers, but he had truly never taught recruits as exceptional as these. Every one of them was unique—there wasn't a single average talent here.
He knew that the situation was largely due to Zephyr's presence. The allure of training under an admiral was an irresistible draw for any marine soldier.
Moreover, this recruitment was on a global scale, unlike previous recruitments that were regional.
Actually, this batch wasn't the only group of recruits. However, many new soldiers didn't qualify for this elite group and would be trained by other instructors. Only the best of the best had been carefully selected for this training.
"Tell me about them."
Zephyr was interested. This was his first year as an instructor, and he was eager to learn about the abilities of his future students.
Freeman gestured for a soldier to bring him a few files, handing one to Zephyr.
"This is the profile of Vice Admiral Garp's son, Monkey D. Dragon. Although there isn't much outstanding information here, as Garp's son, his talents surely can't be lacking."
"Garp's son? I've met him a few times," Zephyr commented.
Zephyr was familiar with Garp and knew that Garp had brought his son to the Marine Headquarters before. Although he hadn't paid much attention to him at the time, he had some vague memories.
"The two most outstanding recruits in this batch are these two."
Handing two files to Zephyr, Freeman said with excitement, "In all my years of instructing, I've never seen recruits as remarkable as these two. They will undoubtedly become invaluable assets to the marines in the future."
"Oh?"
Zephyr's interest was piqued. He knew that Freeman, with his extensive experience, could often accurately assess a recruit's potential based on their profile. For him to speak so highly was a sign of truly exceptional talent.
Zephyr took the files and began reading them carefully, soon frowning in surprise.
"Borsalino and Sakazuki, both from the North Blue, recently joined the marines, and both are Devil Fruit users of the Logia type."
Zephyr was taken aback. Both of them came from North Blue and were Logia Devil Fruit users. Logia fruits were the rarest type, and having two Logia recruits at once was astounding, even for him.
"The North Blue branch rated them both at the highest level. Admiral Zephyr, their potential is extremely high," Freeman added.
"Indeed."
Zephyr agreed. Just being Logia users gave them exceptionally high potential, and the fact that they had received top evaluations in all other areas showed that their talents weren't limited to their abilities.
Even Zephyr hadn't encountered recruits quite like them before.
Memorizing every detail about these two, Zephyr decided he would personally instruct them. These two young men had the potential to become candidates for admiralcy.
"Are there any other ability users among this batch?"
With the rise of the Pirate Era, Devil Fruits had become more widely known, and the power of ability users was common knowledge.
Freeman replied, "Aside from them, there are two others, but they're both Zoan type users."
"Becoming an ability user is a rare opportunity. Although I don't entirely support the use of Devil Fruits because it decreases survivability in naval battles, ability users undoubtedly have higher potential."
Zephyr himself wasn't an ability user. Although he didn't entirely approve of the Devil Fruit abilities, he understood their potential. As an instructor, his purpose was to cultivate talented recruits for the Marine Headquarters, and ability users certainly had potential.
