Chapter 88: Promoting Tobi to Deputy Leader of the Organization!
Seeing Sasori's reaction, Uchiha Yi knew he had his attention. Then he revealed the truth about the Moon's Eye Plan to Sasori.
As for whether Sasori would leak this information, Uchiha Yi was fairly confident he wouldn't. Despite turning himself into a puppet, Sasori still retained emotional ties to his grandmother. Knowing the Moon's Eye Plan would trap everyone in an eternal genjutsu, including those he still cared about, Sasori wouldn't likely support its continuation.
"What's your plan moving forward?"
After listening to the explanation, Sasori realized how narrow his perspective on the ninja world had been.
"The next step is to transition the Akatsuki's leadership to Tobi. I plan to make him the deputy leader. I'll need your support when the time comes," Yi replied, briefly outlining his plan.
"Alright, I'll help," Sasori said after a brief pause, agreeing without hesitation.
"Hahaha! Oh, and Sasori-senpai, I'll also need your help to build more vehicles for me," Yi added with a grin.
Over the following weeks, Uchiha Yi successfully swayed Kakuzu and Zabuza Momochi to join his faction.
He decided to forgo recruiting Hidan, deeming him too unpredictable, and skipped Deidara, finding him too immature. Kisame was out of the question, as his loyalty had already been secured by Tobi. The same went for Black Zetsu, Itachi, and Tobi himself, all of whom were firmly aligned with their own agendas.
With preliminary groundwork complete, Yi decided it was time to execute his plan.
The Akatsuki members were summoned for another meeting.
"Hey, hey! Leader Pain, I was in the middle of a Jashin ritual! Couldn't this wait? I'm not happy about this!" Hidan grumbled loudly.
"Didn't we just have a meeting not too long ago? What's the deal this time? Can't even let me focus on making money," Kakuzu muttered with annoyance, though he likely already knew what was coming.
The other members remained relatively quiet, waiting for Pain's arrival.
"Quiet!"
The commotion ended the moment Pain arrived. His authoritative presence silenced the room.
"Today, I have an important announcement," Pain began. "From now on, I appoint Tobi as the deputy leader of the Akatsuki."
The room went silent. The announcement shocked the members who hadn't been informed beforehand.
"Tobi? The deputy leader?"
Disbelief spread across their faces. How could a mere trainee suddenly leap to the position of deputy leader? Wasn't the promotion path supposed to go from trainee to member, then to higher ranks? This kind of leap was entirely unprecedented.
"I object!"
"Me too!"
Deidara and Hidan immediately protested, their disbelief turning into outrage.
Uchiha Yi stepped forward. "I think the leader's decision is reasonable. Tobi's strength is undeniable. His space-time ninjutsu is practically invincible—I can't defeat him even if he handicaps himself."
Hearing this, Zabuza also voiced his support. "Tobi is strong. I have no objections to him becoming deputy leader."
Kakuzu and Sasori shrugged indifferently. "We don't care."
Pain turned to Itachi, Kisame, and Zetsu. "What about you three?"
All three gave neutral responses. Kisame and Itachi didn't seem particularly invested, and Black Zetsu, aware of the larger picture, remained silent.
"Then it's decided. Tobi is now the deputy leader of the Akatsuki," Pain concluded firmly.
"Wait a minute, Pain!"
"If Tobi wants to be deputy leader, he has to defeat me first!" Deidara declared defiantly.
"Same here!" Hidan chimed in.
Pain turned to Tobi. "Are you willing to fight them to settle this?"
"No problem," Tobi replied, though the man beneath the mask, Uchiha Obito, looked far from pleased.
A few days earlier, Konan and Pain had approached Obito with shocking news: Pain was dying. His body, already ravaged by years of strain and illness, wouldn't last much longer. Pain explained that he couldn't let the Moon's Eye Plan fail after all the progress made. Pain proposed elevating Obito to deputy leader and eventually handing over full control of the Akatsuki to him.
For Obito, this was an absurd turn of events. The Moon's Eye Plan was his idea—Pain's "dream" was something he had manipulated into existence. Now, Pain expected him to carry out this fabricated dream in his place?
Black Zetsu was equally frustrated but found himself with no choice but to accept. Pain's deteriorating condition was undeniable, and without him, the plan required someone else at the helm.
On the training grounds, the Akatsuki gathered to watch the duel.
Hidan was the first to challenge Tobi, charging at him with his iconic three-bladed scythe.
Obito smirked beneath his mask. Using his Kamui ability, he easily phased through Hidan's attacks. Moments later, he closed the distance and placed his hand on Hidan's chest.
"Wood Release: Piercing Stakes Technique!"
Sharp wooden spikes erupted from Obito's hand, impaling Hidan. The spikes branched out, quickly turning Hidan into a human pincushion.
Next, Deidara faced off against Tobi, unleashing a barrage of explosive clay. But no matter how destructive the blasts, they failed to touch Obito. His space-time ninjutsu rendered him untouchable. In the end, Deidara was forced to concede defeat.
The message was clear: Tobi's strength was undeniable. The Akatsuki had a new deputy leader.
