Chapter 4: Chapter 4 - The ceremony begins
After familiarizing himself with his current situation, Wang Zi headed to bed, trying to rest up for the awakening tomorrow.
Wang Zi lay in his dormitory bed, staring up at the dimly lit ceiling of his room. The faint hum of air conditioning and the soft glow of distant neon lights outside his window were the only sounds that filled the night. The information he just got buzzed in his mind like a distant hum, an ever-present reminder of his uncertainty.
"With these stats, instead of getting something related to increasing the body's power it might be better to go with a mana based class... Damnit."
"The little fairy did say you could still pick a class that wasn't totally suited for you, but the compatibility issues might be a problem." Wang Zi thought to himself. After what he had experienced before, what he wanted most was to see if he could break the limits that he couldn't in his past life. Going the magic/mana based caster route wasn't something he was too keen on.
A sharp knot tightened in his stomach at the thought of the ceremony. Tomorrow, his entire future would be decided—whether he would awaken a powerful class that could make him someone of worth in this new world, or remain an "ordinary" student, relegated to a life of mediocrity.
"I'm sure i'd still be able to push myself above the average person with just training, but with no resources and no teacher I'd probably get left behind in a heartbeat. The effect of mana on me is something I have no idea of after all."
Wang Zi rolled onto his side, trying to block out the pressure that seemed to press down on him from all sides. The futuristic world outside his window was full of possibilities, of grand potential, and yet it felt so distant to him. His gaze flickered to the small holographic display beside his bed, showing a countdown clock: Awakening Ceremony in 9:56.
"Phew, there's not much I can do with so little time anyways. I'll have to deal with the situation as it develops." And so he fell asleep.
The next morning, Wang Zi woke up early, his heart pounding as if his body already knew what was at stake. He dressed up, his mind replaying the memories of the Awakening Ceremony he could recall from his old self. The atmosphere in Nexus Academy today was thick with excitement, nerves, and expectations. This was it.
After a quick breakfast at the bustling cafeteria, Wang Zi made his way to the classroom.
Kain, the class president, a boy with a body streamlined like a model, with slicked back black hair, still had his usual confident self, a grin spread across his face. He leaned against the wall, casually chatting with a pair of male students.
"Relax, you two," Kain said with a chuckle, glancing over at the nervous duo.
"It's just an Awakening. The worst that can happen is you don't get a combat class, and even then, it's no big deal."
Ji Min, a tall, broad-shouldered boy with short, spiky hair, clenched his fists and stared at the floor. "Easy for you to say, Kain. You've been training for this your whole life. What if I can only awaken a support class? Or farming ability or something?"
Kain chuckled again, though there was a flash of uncertainty in his eyes.
"Please, you're way more talented than that. They wouldn't waste someone like you on a low-level class. Besides, look at you! Your body and training won't let you down."
A few tables behind them stood a small but sharp-eyed girl with an air of quiet confidence, called Li Na. She had short red hair, and by the way she talked you could tell she was a little pepper.
"That's cute, Kain. We all know it's about power and your status screen. But most of all, compatibility. The rest is just... fluff." She adjusted the sleek, silver straps of her fingerless gloves, clearly eager to show off whatever powers she'd awaken. "I've been practicing for this moment since I was ten. If I don't get to awaken what I want... Heh, then this whole thing would be a sham!"
Wang Zi observed them from a distance, noting the subtle shift in Li Na's tone. She was trying to hide her nerves behind her confident exterior, but the slight shaking of her hands betrayed her.
Nearby, Xian Mei, a petite girl with long purple-blue wavy hair , and sky blue eyes, was sitting elegantly, reading a book. She was the one that attracted Wang Zi the most. She had a completely calm demeanor, just like the sea. Many people had Alicia as the class beauty, but Xian Mei was old Wang Zi's crush ever since he laid eyes on her.
At the other end of the classroom stood Alicia, her arms crossed as she observed the other students with a cool, detached gaze. Her striking icy blue hair framed her face, and her posture exuded an aura of unshakable confidence. Despite the nervous energy filling the room, she seemed unaffected.
Beside her, Bea leaned casually against the wall, flipping a small, glowing sphere between her fingers, her green hair bouncing with every movement. She wore a sly grin, her sharp eyes glimmering with mischievous excitement. Unlike Alicia's confidence, Bea seemed to thrive in the charged atmosphere, as if the ceremony were just another game to her.
Bea tilted her head, her grin widening as she caught sight of a few of their classmates nervously adjusting their uniforms, their faces a mix of excitement and fear.
"Look at them," Bea murmured, her voice playful with a hint of amusement. "You'd think it was the end of the world or something. I mean, it's just an Awakening Ceremony, right?" She twirled the glowing sphere again, sending it zipping through the air before catching it effortlessly.
Alicia's lips twitched into a faint smile, though her expression remained composed.
"Most of them lack the resolve. They're scared of what they might awaken." Her icy blue eyes flicked to the group of students huddled together, muttering nervously.
"The fact that you're so carefree means you've already decided what you'll go for." There was no judgment in her voice, only a quiet observation. Alicia had seen Bea's mischievous confidence before - it was always there, lurking beneath her playful exterior.
Bea shrugged, unconcerned. "Well, you know how it is, family traditions, after all. Hehehe."
All of a sudden, Bea lept at Alicia, hugging her and pressing smushing both their 'assets' together.
"But I'm curious about you, Alicia. Are you also gonna follow your family's tradition?"
Alicia let out a quiet breath, already used to the clingy nature of her friend.
"Let go."
"Fine fine sheesh, our little Alicia is shy! Hehe!"
Alicia looked at Bea looking like she wanted to kill her. But after sighing, her gaze flicked back to the students across the room, some of whom were still whispering in low tones. Her cool demeanor never wavered as she spoke, her voice calm and unwavering.
"Yes." This response of hers caused Bea to narrow her eyes. 'So you went with it huh.'
On the other side of the room, Chen Kai, a self-assured, arrogant student with perfectly styled hair and a lanky body, was surrounded by a small crowd of his admirers. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, his chin tilted slightly upward as though the whole world owed him lunch.
"Don't worry about me," he said, his voice dripping with confidence.
"I already know what i'll awaken. The only issue is compatibility. My family's bloodline has been awakened for generations after all." He glanced sideways at the others, his expression one of thinly veiled smugness. "This ceremony is just a formality for me."
One of the students, a nervous-looking boy with glasses, nodded rapidly. "Of course! You've got the perfect genes for it, Chen Kai!"
Chen Kai gave a dismissive wave. "Obviously."
His gaze flicked briefly to Wang Zi, who was standing quietly, looking he was daydreaming. Chen Kai sneered slightly, 'A damn lab baby', but the expression quickly faded as he turned back to his adoring classmates. "But, of course, not all of us are blessed. Try your best, I expect you to keep up with me!"
At that moment, the teacher Wang Zi had seen before, stepped into the room, and all noise faded. He moved his hands and a display came to life in front of him.
"Students,."
"You will enter the Awakening Chamber one at a time. The process will reveal your latent abilities, your class, and the future that lies ahead. Know this - your powers are a reflection of your potential, but they do not define you. What matters is what you do with them."
"I've already said it before, there are no useless classes, only useless people. The choice is up to you. But never forget what was taught to you here."
The students fell silent, the air growing thick with anticipation. The room seemed to hold its collective breath.
"Let's go to the auditorium. Follow me!"
"Yes, teacher!"
The room they arrived at was nestled deep within the school's core, a high-tech arena that resembled something out of a sci-fi movie - at least to Wang Zi.
A massive circular chamber with a transparent dome that stretched high into the air, its walls adorned with intricate holographic patterns that flickered and shifted with each passing second.
Inside, the Awakening Relic awaited. It was a ball-shaped device, with a surface like glass that each student would be touching as part of the ceremony. The central stage, illuminated by what Wang Zi could only guess to be ambient mana, stood as a silent witness to the monumental event.
All around the chamber stood multiple people, most of them teachers of the Academy.
"Hohoho, its time for the awakening again is it!" The speaker was a slightly chubby old man with a gentle look and a massive white beard.
"Yes principal Anthon." Beside him stood another equally chubby man, with an afro like puffy hair, but this one was clearly very nervous.
"Alright, let's begin then shall we? Teacher Zhou's class was the last, get to it!" said Anthon.
"Yes, principal! Teacher Zhou, would you do the honors?"
"Of course. Let this year's Awakening Ceremony begin!" Teacher Zhou walked confidently into the middle of the room, next to the awakening relic.
"Ji Min, step forward!"
