Chapter 5: Chapter 5 - Classes and Compatibility
"Good luck," Kain said beside him, giving him a reassuring clap on the shoulder. His smile was warm, but Wang Zi could see the slight glint of nervousness in his eyes as well. Everyone here had something to prove, even the confident ones.
"I got this." Ji Min walked forward.
Wang Zi recalled what he knew about his classmate.
"He's the one who shut me up when I woke up huh. He's got a good body, nice muscles. Looks like a power type, just like me."
"Well, the me from before, right now... I look like a stick."
"Let's see how he does then."
Ji Min was a solid presence in the class, a hardworking boy. Despite not being from a rich family, you could tell from his physique just how much he worked for this. Everyone was curious to see what class would suit him, especially since he had shown some potential in martial arts and combat training.
He stepped into the platform, next to the awakening relic with quiet confidence, his expression a blend of nervousness and hope. The stars in the overhead projections began to shimmer as the relic read his profile, and the holographic interface above his head began to flicker.
Ji Min then went blank. His soul seemingly out of his body. Wang Zi quickly picked up on this.
"Hm? Do we get sent somewhere? Like a projection? Interesting..."
Suddenly stars formed above Ji Min's head and aligned into a bright, fiery constellation. The class materialized with a forceful, explosive light.
Name: Ji Min
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Class: Warrior
Rank: A (Compatibility: 83%)
Level: 1
Talents: [Hidden]
The warrior star blazed intensely above his head, symbolizing the class's focus on physical power. It was built for brute strength and tactical combat. Warriors specialized in close-quarters combat, using their immense physical strength to overpower enemies, breaking their defenses.
As the lights dimmed, the room filled with a low murmur of admiration. Ji Min stood still, his face blank but his heart racing. This was the class he had hoped for—a straightforward path to power, though it wasn't as flashy as some of the others.
The audience began to stir as the class took shape. There was a mix of reactions, some respectful, some indifferent.
"Warrior... Well, it's a solid class," Kain whispered, nodding in approval. "He's got the build for it. That class will give him some serious power."
"Not bad at all. A warrior who can take hits and dish them out. He'll be great for a frontline position," another student added.
A group of classmates exchanged glances.
"Definitely not the flashiest class, but it's practical. And he's a good fit for it," Li Na said, watching Ji Min's class rank rise above his head.
Ji Min was very happy. He didn't need to be the strongest or the most impressive—his path was clear. Warrior was simple, powerful, and focused. It was all about building strength, and that was what he'd spent years doing.
Wang Zi was slackjawed watching the awakening. "Holy crap. That was so cool!" He whispered to himself, "Warrior is supposed to be a great base class for power-type people to build off of. Too bad his talent isn't shown. Or maybe he didn't get one yet?"
"I can't tell if the compatibility is high or not though. 85% seems pretty good to me. If I have that much with warrior I'll try and go for it aswell. Heh, this time I might actually be able to blow out a mountain with a punch!" Wang Zi grinned like an idiot, while thinking to himself.
"Yo what's up with Wang Zi? He looks like a retard." Asked a student not far away.
"Sigh leave him alone man he's probably under too much pressure."
"I guess..."
The Principal, standing above, in a hidden room with a view to the platform below, looked thoughtful as he observed Ji Min.
He stroked his chin, his gaze softening with approval.
"Warrior..." he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. "A class with balanced power, leaning towards strength… A soldier, frontliner a strong foundation for what lies ahead."
"Yes principal. Although the compatibility could be better." Said the afro-man standing close by. He was vice principal Chilton, the who took care of the academy while the principal was out.
"85% is good enough. He's a civilian student, with limited resources. Not everyone is born with a golden spoon in their mouth. You'd do well to remember that Chilton." The Principal's voice was low as he looked to the Vice Principal standing beside him.
"Yes principal, you're absolutely right. I was just hoping that we could produce some better seedli-"
"Enough. The ceremony just began. Control yourself!"
The Vice Principal stepped back and nodded.
Nearby, Kain let out a breath of relief. "He's got the physical ability for it. Warrior is a solid class. He'll be a dependable ally in battle."
"Seems kind of... ordinary, huh?" one student remarked, raising an eyebrow as the holographic display above Ji Min's head faded. "But I guess he's not the flashy type anyway."
Bea, who had been standing near the back with a mischievous grin, was also silently watching Ji Min's awakening.
"He's got the kind of class that makes you want to be his friend in a fight"
Alicia, standing next to Bea, nodded in agreement but said nothing, making Bea just roll her eyes at how boring her best friend was.
Ji Min let go of the relic, and the holographic stars around him faded into the background. The display in the air blinked one last time before vanishing, signaling the end of his awakening. He felt a quiet sense of pride; this was the class he had worked for. A warrior.
Teacher Zhou standing nearby had a smile on his usually stern face.
"A warrior, 85% compatibility. Warriors are a versatile base class that you can branch off of quite easily, depending on your talent. Well done Ji Min."
"Thank you teacher!"
Ji Min bowed towards his teacher and left the stage, heading close to his classmates. Celebrations would have to be left for later though, the next student was called up.
After witnessing a few more of his classmates after Ji Min, Wang Zi quickly lost interest. There were no heavenly visions or supernatural events like he had read in the novels of his past life, just the same holographic stars with a couple of differences indication the class and compatibility of everyone. He still kept attention to the numbers and classes though.
A few people in particular still had him at attention though. The first one was Alicia, the cold-looking classroom beauty.
Name: Alicia Frost
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Class: Elemental Mage
Rank: A (Compatibility: 83%)
Level: 1
Talents: [Hidden]
What made Wang Zi puzzled the most was that her compatibility was lower than Ji Ming. "How? She seems to be a young lady of a big family, how did she get a lower compatibility than him? There's no way she doesn't know what the awakening means..."
Contrary to Wang Zi, Bea had a smile that wasn't a smile, "You idiot..."
And the principal, "Chilton, that girl is from the Frost family is she not?"
"Yes, principal. She's the youngest daughter of the patriach and his 2nd wife."
"Sigh. The frost family is known for its swordsmanship, initially opting for either a warrior or an assassin class and then infusing cold mana into it, follow the path of a mana swordsman, hence their family name... Why did she choose to go for a mage type class? That idiot Arthur Frost probably has something to do with it. Alas."
The principal was slightly disapointed, Alicia was one of the ones he was hoping would raise the name of Nexus Academy. But now...
Wang Zi also felt that something was wrong, but that was none of his business. They had barely spoken more than 10 words in all his school life. Then again that was true for almost all his classmates.
After Alicia there were a few more that caught his attention, Bea especially.
When she touched the relic, the stars above began to dance wildly, shifting and colliding with one another. The room seemed to shimmer with the energy of nature and life, elemental forces, and the earth itself. Bea's class appeared as a vibrant star, warm and alive.
Name: Bea Might
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Class: Elemental Mage
Rank: S (Compatibility: 94%)
Level: 1
Talents: [Hidden]
This was the highest compatibility Wang Zi had seen so far, Rank S, a staggering 94%! Almost everyone's eyes brightened when they saw the holograms.
"94%… that's insane!" Wang Zi thought, "It seems she was born to be an elemental mage."
Bea stepped out of the pod, her face lighting up with a grin. "Got it!" she said with a wink, clearly pleased her new class.
Even Teacher Zhou's and the principal's eyes brightened considerable, his hand gripping his beard almost ripping out a few hairs. "Good good, as expected of the Might family. Their control of nature mana is outstanding. Chilton!"
"Here, principal!"
"Keep an eye on her. Even though her family can provide for her, the academy should also contribute. She will be a great asset for us in the coming freshman competition!"
"Of course principal. I will make the arrangements right after the ceremony ends."
"No, do it now!"
"Okay!"
After Bea, the next one Wang Zi was interested in was the class president, Kain.
Tall, charismatic, and often seen as the unofficial leader of their class, Kain was known for his discipline and strong will. He didn't appear nervous at all as he stepped into the stage, his posture perfect as he let the process begin.
Above his head, the stars shimmered with incredible energy, and a single star broke away from the rest, lighting up with a steady, golden glow.
Name: Kain Arclight
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Class: Knight
Rank: S (Compatibility: 90%)
Level: 1
Talents:[Hidden]
The audience erupted into applause, murmurs of admiration swirling throughout the room. The students in the front row exchanged impressed glances.
"That's Kain for you," someone said, shaking their head in awe. "Knight fits him perfectly. He's made for this."
"He's got the leadership skills alright. That's why he's class president."
Kain gave a slight nod as he stepped out of the pod, his calm expression still intact, but there was a glint of pride in his eyes. "Thank you," he said to Teacher Zhou before turning toward his classmates, clearly pleased with his class.
This was the first knight Wang Zi had seen so far. "A Knight huh. I guess its more inclined towards defense than offense... Not really my cup of tea."
Chen Kai and Li Na also had a awakened new classes. Wang Zi guessed these had a more offensive nature compared to a Knight, given their names.
Name: Chen Kai
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Class: Berserker
Rank: A (Compatibility: 87%)
Level: 1
Talents:[Hidden]
Chen Kai didn't look very pleased, letting out a low 'tsk' as he left the stage.
Name: Li Na
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Class: Brawler
Rank: A (Compatibility: 85%)
Level: 1
Talents:[Hidden]
Li Na however was very happy with her choice, clenching her knuckles with a grin as she took her hard off the relic.
After half the class was done, Wang Zi was finally starting to get nervous. That was until SHE stepped up.
Xian Mei, a quiet yet enigmatic student with striking purple hair, had always been an intriguing figure in their class. She was known for her calm demeanor and intense concentration, often lost in thought or meditating when others were distracted. Her quiet nature had led many to wonder if she was hiding something more, and when her turn finally came, boy were they right.
As she approached the awakening relic, a serene silence fell over the room. Xian Mei, didn't speak much, so people didn't pay much attention to her, but she was incredibly beautiful.
If Wang Zi had to compare her to someone, it would be Fern, from Frieren: Beyond journey's end. Although he hadn't watched the anime, or read the manga, he did see quite a few pictures of the 2D girl when he was browsing his usual forums.
She had the same outrageous figure, cleverly hidden behind the academy uniform, the same beautiful purple hair and eyes, even the style was the same. The only difference seemed to be her face, but Wang Zi didn't 100% remember it, so it might have been his mistake.
Xian Mei gave no outward sign of nervousness, stepping inside with the same composed air she always carried. She closed her eyes for a moment, and when she placed her hand on the relic, the room seemed to still, as if the world was holding its breath in anticipation.
The stars above her head flickered and swirled, forming into complex constellations that seemed to stretch and shift as if guided by an unseen force. Above her, once just a glittering array of distant points of light, now warped and twisted under her influence. Slowly, a single purple star appeared its glow pure, blindingly bright. The energy emanating from it felt weird, as if it were tapping into everyone's thoughts.
And soon, the hologram showed up.
