Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - The V.B.
When Wang Zi finally left the classroom and stepped outside, he couldn't help but be amazed by the unreal sci-fi like buildings around him.
"Holy crap. I really came to the future!"
Nexus Academy - his school's name - stood at the heart of Earth-327's metropolis, a towering structure of sleek, glass-paneled walls and intricate cybernetic filigree, reaching high above the skyline. Unlike the dull, concrete schools and buildings Wang Zi remembered from his old life, this academy shone like a piece of living architecture, its outer shell constantly shifting in response to the environment.
The building seemed alive.
As Wang Zi approached the school gates, a series of holographic panels materialized before him, scanning his bio-signature and personal data in an instant. He flinched at the sudden intrusion of technology but had grown somewhat accustomed to the efficiency of this world. He heard a 'ding' as the gates opened, and Wang Zi exited, still amazed at what he was seeing.
"Now that's something. Remembering this body's memories and actually experiencing it feels completely different!"
Wang Zi walked through the city streets, his mind still trying to accept the influx of memories he had received. He noticed the differences in the people around him. Some wore advanced suits and carried digital devices that projected 3D maps in the air. Others had augmented limbs or eyes that glowed with supernatural energy, some even had electricity flowing around them. The city felt alive with possibilities, a place where even the ordinary could achieve greatness.
Wang Zi made his way back to the small apartment he called home, but his thoughts were elsewhere. The coming ceremony would determine his future. Would he awaken to a powerful class, or would he become just another ordinary person, struggling at the bottom, playing catch up from the get-go?
His home was... As simple as the one he had before he died, much to his dismay. Aside from the normal apartment stuff, a screen that seemed like a tv, kitchen and bathroom, he only had a bed.
"No hobbies until my memories awakened it seems. Then again, considering this body was a so called lab-baby it kinda makes sense."
Lab-babies, like the name suggests were 'created' by earth's government, combining genes from the gene-bank. These babies were taken care of by the government until 13 years old, given basic care and a suitable environment for growth, until they could enter school.
After school took them in, and until they awakened at 18, the government paid for their living expenses. In this day and age, and until awakening, nobody knew if a baby had potential or not. With the danger that came with fighting the Silent Ones, some awakened left their genes in the bank, hoping to father a child that could help the human race.
Wang Zi was one of them. Not that he was upset about it.
"Alright, from my memories it seems like there's a kind of worldwide virtual network - the virtual brain 'VB' for short - that connects the entire human race... I guess it would be something like a future virtual reality internet? Probably my best bet to find more information."
"Unfortunately my government issued holo-watch doesn't let me full dive, but I should still be able to browse freely."
And as Wang Zi willed with his mind, a screen popped up in front of him. there was a had a cute girl with wings on her back, white hair and a black and white maid dress floating about. She looked like... a little fairy maid?
"...Really old me? Sigh."
"Welcome, master. How can I assist you today?"
"Ugh." Wang Zi was pissed. Did the old Wang Zi have a thing for maids?
"I… need information," Wang Zi said "About this world. About the awakening ceremony. And... the classes that people can change into?"
The cute fairy's eyes blinked once. "Accessing… information on the Awakening Ceremony and Human Class Evolution."
The hologram flickered, and the screen before Wang Zi changed, displaying detailed images of people surrounded by glowing auras. There were humans standing before enormous crystals, their hands glowing with unnatural light as they underwent the awakening ceremony. Around them, vibrant energy pulses rippled outward.
The fairy's voice continued, "The Awakening Ceremony is a rite of passage for all humans. During this ceremony, individuals unlock their potential and receive a class. Some receive a talent, or a special affinity aswell. These powers are tied to a specific aspect of the world. They can range from elemental control, to enhanced physical strength, to mind or matter manipulation. Some individuals even gain the ability to manipulate time itself. The class you are assigned is influenced by predisposition, personal history, the state of your body at the time of awakening, your total stats on the status screen... and luck."
"That's not to say someone with low strength can't become a warrior or a class that enhances strength, just that the compatibility would be lower, making his or hers future path harder than normal."
Wang Zi stared at the images, the weight of their meaning sinking in. People change into something else—something greater, something far beyond what normal humans of his time could ever hope to be.
This was the potential he didn't have in his old world. He craved it.
"There are five known categories of classes," the fairy continued, "with hundreds of variations under each. These are classified as:"
Elemental Classes - Fire, water, earth, air, light, dark, etc.
Mental Classes - Telepathy, telekinesis, illusion, mind Control, etc.
Physical Enhancement Classes - Super strength, speed, endurance, agility, etc.
Support Classes - Priests, geneticists, augmenters, mechanics, etc.
Lifestyle Classes - Chefs, farmers, tailors, enchanters, artists, etc.
Special Classes - These classes are special cases that don't fit into any of the above categories. Some of them extremely powerful, others extremely ordinary.
Wang Zi felt a jolt of excitement course through him. Classes. Powers. This was incredible! A part of him wanted to leap into the ceremony and see what he could become.
"What happens if… someone doesn't awaken a class?"
The little fairy paused for a moment. "That is highly unlikely. Every human is born with the capacity for awakening, even if its a lifestyle class. There are no cases stored in the database where a human failed to awaken."
Wang Zi wasn't 100% sure though, after all he didn't really belong here, his soul had moved over from who knows how many years ago. What if the awakening depended on the soul? What if his compatibility with this body wasn't 100%? Could the technology here find him out?
"Huuuuuuuuuuuhhhh... I gotta relax. I was reborn here for a reason. There's little chance of me getting found out. Those novels I read always ended up fine. Gotta be the same with me right?"
As Wang Zi was mulling over the new info, he little fairy finished reading from the database.
"Was I good master? Did I help you out?"
Wang Zi could practically see a tail behind her back, wagging, just waiting for praise.
"God damnit." He facepalmed.
"Yes, you were great! Very good!"
"Yay, thank you master!" The little fairy spun around, little fireworks blasting away as she flew.
"..."
"Can you show me my status?"
"Of course master, but to see your status you just need to will it, like you did for me to appear, or speak out 'Status' no need to ask me~"
'I really need to change this little fairy assistant thing, sheesh.'
"Alright, thanks. Status."
