Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Forced by Fate
The Secret Angel safely returned to the gantry, and as soon as Yang Hui stepped out of the cockpit, he said nothing. He headed straight to his room, still in his pilot suit, and collapsed onto the bed without changing.
He needed some rest.
For him, the entire mission had been effortless. Even when facing Talibia and the UNION's joint forces at the end, there was no threat.
But his mind needed rest. During those few seconds when he activated his Revolutionary Mode, a flood of quantum brainwaves overwhelmed his senses.
There were cries from brave warriors issuing challenges, the pained wails of wounded soldiers, the urgent pleas of rescue teams unable to reach their comrades, and the panic, fear, and despair of those who were utterly broken.
Yang Hui was thankful that he had only activated it briefly before turning it off; otherwise, the chaotic emotions might have driven him mad. Even now, he felt like his mind was on the verge of splitting.
However, he felt no regret for his actions at the end, when he had killed the fleeing soldiers.
The battlefield had never been a place for the faint-hearted. If soldiers wanted to step onto the battlefield, they had to be prepared. If the enemy was too strong and you wanted to run, it was better to go home and suck on your mother's milk. Such people didn't belong on the battlefield. Instead of staying and endangering your comrades, it was better to resolve it yourself.
For the world's transformation to take place, sacrifices were required. Those who fled the battlefield had to face the consequences. It could even be seen as a form of redemption for their cowardice.
"Heh, come to think of it, UNION should be thanking me," Yang Hui muttered to himself as he drifted off to sleep.
...
While Yang Hui slept soundly, the rest of the world couldn't find rest.
Civilians supporting Celestial Being cheered as they watched the Secret Angel's battle record on the news; news agencies were overwhelmed with calls, their offices bustling with activity as they scrambled for first-hand reports. Meanwhile, intelligence agencies and research departments from around the world were working tirelessly to gather and analyze information on the Talibia battle.
"Are you serious?" The highest officials from various nations looked at the reports in disbelief.
The reports they received were surprisingly consistent, and their reactions were remarkably similar.
They felt as if the reports were some kind of joke—one single unit was capable of suppressing an entire fleet?
But unfortunately, it wasn't a joke. The conclusions were based on extensive analysis, simulations, and calculations.
The world leaders fell into silence as they read the reports, their brows furrowing deeper and their anxiety mounting.
If Celestial Being's previous appearances had seemed like mere skirmishes—at most, small-scale playthings—they could not deny that the Gundam's performance was exceptional, but they had still considered it manageable. If they took it seriously, they thought, they could handle it.
Now, however, they had to reassess Celestial Being. The appearance of the Secret Angel made them realize that Celestial Being truly had the power to rival any of the three major powers.
UNION, having felt the most direct impact from the Talibia campaign, had already sent invitations to the other two nations, hoping to form an alliance against Celestial Being. After all, there were six Gundams, and it would be best to divide them up evenly. They had come to the harsh realization that no single nation could deal with the Gundams alone.
Though the other two nations recognized the threat as well, each still had their own plans and wanted to test their luck. Having never directly felt the pressure of the Secret Angel, they still hoped they could succeed somehow.
UNION, however, offered no objections. In fact, they were almost gleeful.
Though UNION hadn't suffered significant losses, they had still taken a hit.
They were more than happy to see the Earth Federation and AEU suffer under Celestial Being, because it wasn't right for just one nation to bear the brunt. After all, it's better to enjoy misery together than to suffer alone.
The world-shaking cause of the sleepless nights across the globe had, after sleeping for over ten hours, finally woken up. Feeling uncomfortable from the sticky sensation on his skin, Yang Hui stripped off his pilot suit, took a shower, and put on clean clothes before leaving his room.
It was late in the evening, and the streets were quiet. Yang Hui grabbed a quick snack and laid back on a recliner on the rooftop to enjoy the night sky.
"Sigh, this isn't doing it. The Earth's sky is nothing compared to the cosmos," Yang Hui remarked casually.
"Of course. Since the Industrial Revolution, Earth has been heavily developed, with pollution covering it. It can't compare to the pristine stars of space," Wang Liumei said, walking up behind him and sitting next to him.
Yang Hui glanced at her sideways, squinting his eyes.
"What's wrong? Do I look strange?" Wang Liumei noticed his unusual look and asked.
"You're still up this late? Be careful, you won't grow tall or mature this way," Yang Hui teased, glancing at her.
Her outfit was indeed strikingly mismatched.
A small figure, lacking in curves, dressed in a sexy lace nightgown, with black stockings that were meant to be alluring. If Huang wore something like this, Yang Hui would've turned into a werewolf and devoured her before the month was out. But on Wang Liumei… it didn't spark any interest at all. The huge contrast just didn't have any charm.
"You!" Wang Liumei looked at herself and, fuming, bit down on Yang Hui's shoulder without hesitation.
"Ow! Ouch! Let go, Wang Little Dog!"
After what felt like forever, Yang Hui's shoulder was bleeding, and Wang Liumei finally let go, but didn't change her position. She just lay on him, resting her head on his chest.
"Hey! Little girl, don't you think this is a bit much? I'm not that kind of person," Yang Hui tried to push her off, careful not to hurt her, but Wang Liumei stubbornly stayed put.
"Is it tough?" she asked casually, but the simple question made Yang Hui freeze. He stopped struggling and let her remain on him.
"It's tough... It has to be," Yang Hui responded heavily. "The time left for humanity... isn't much." This was the second time he had said those words, and his mood was still as heavy as before.
Reality wasn't a game, and the protagonist wouldn't always remain the protagonist. Who could guarantee that the final outcome would mirror an anime, where Setsuna would connect with the ELS? Who could guarantee that the ELS would even communicate with him?
Facing imminent and unknown crises, Yang Hui couldn't afford to stop.
Despite his carefree demeanor when not on a mission, Yang Hui never truly rested. He was constantly training in the simulator, refining his piloting skills, mastering his Revolutionary Mode, designing the fourth-generation Gundams, working on next-gen MS designs for a unified world, and simplifying the second-phase plans, among other tasks.
Wang Liumei had once witnessed one of Yang Hui's self-training sessions, but after that, she never dared to watch again.
It was too cruel. Yang Hui had been so brutal with himself that it was almost inhuman. She couldn't understand why someone so capable would push himself to such extremes, training relentlessly even when exhausted, dragging himself out of the simulator to dive back into his work.
It was because of this that she no longer felt her own suffering was so painful, and her resentment toward the world had lessened. After all, if someone as outstanding as Yang Hui was putting everything into improving himself, never relaxing even an inch, what right did she have to complain?
Yang Hui felt a bit reflective, his face curling into a self-deprecating smile.
He never expected the second person to say those words to him would be this young girl, small in stature yet filled with maturity.
Huang had once told him those words too, but she had only asked, never looking for an answer, perhaps already knowing it. She didn't stop him, didn't advise him to give up—she just silently supported him from behind.
"Is it the second and third phase plans?" Wang Liumei asked softly.
"...Yes."
"But you're not alone. You still have Huang, the Gundam pilots, everyone on the Ptolemy, and... me. You can rely on us. You don't have to push yourself this hard alone," Wang Liumei's voice held a hint of sobbing as she spoke.
"There are some things... only I can do. I'm afraid of dying, but rather than leaving it to others, I'd rather have it in my hands," Yang Hui said, extending his hand toward the sky and gripping it tightly, as if he wasn't just grasping at air, but at everything he had.
"Can I do anything?" Wang Liumei looked up and asked.
"Just focus on the task VEDA gave you... and..."
Before he could finish, Wang Liumei leaned in and kissed him, cutting him off.
They parted quickly, and although Wang Liumei's face was flushed, she met his eyes directly. "I wasn't asking what you could do for Celestial Being. I was asking what you could do for you."
"Ahem... uh... sorry, I have Huang already, so…"
"Huang has agreed."
"Wait, she agreed... What?" Yang Hui's brain short-circuited in disbelief.
"Huang agreed, but she said I have to wait until later... until later...," Wang Liumei lowered her head, shyly trailing off.
Yang Hui knew exactly what she was implying, but... was this appropriate? Wasn't today April Fools' Day?
"Ugh~" Yang Hui, completely lost in thought, gave up trying to process it, covering his face and collapsing onto the recliner. He was a serious guy, after all, and had only ever wanted to keep the ones he cared about alive and enjoy a peaceful life with them, not striving for world domination or building grand crystal palaces.
But sometimes, fate had a way of being mischievous. The more you tried to go left, the more it pushed you to the right.
"Ah~ Forget it!" Yang Hui stood up suddenly, nearly knocking Wang Liumei to the ground.
"What are you doing?" Wang Liumei asked in confusion.
"Training room. I need to calm down!"
As she watched Yang Hui hastily leave, Wang Liumei covered her mouth, laughing softly.
"Hehehe, I gave you my first kiss. You can't run away now. And you do
n't know, but Huang already has a special plan for you. Hehehe, I can't wait to see your reaction when it all unfolds…"
