Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The "Reaper" Dances
Yang Hui knew that it was no longer time to play around. He immediately deployed all thirty-two GN-bits, with sixteen shield-type GN-bits forming a wall around the Secret Angel. Between each shield gap, gun-type GN-bits revealed their deadly fangs.
Without hesitation, he opened fire, tearing a path before they could fully encircle him.
"Disperse!" Graham immediately commanded as the pink beams raced toward them. He and his subordinates had the reflexes of elite pilots, and having served together in the same unit for so long, their coordination was already quite good. At the sound of Graham's command, they instinctively pulled their control sticks.
But the other units weren't so lucky. The rain of death fell once more, and in the blink of an eye, the cockpit screens were filled with the pink glow. In the next second, it wasn't just the heads but also the limbs of the Flagship units that were obliterated. The Real Type MS on the ground crumpled and fell, their remains scattered, never to rise again.
"Damn it! Gundam!" Howard Mason screamed as he charged straight toward the Secret Angel, firing his linear rifle relentlessly.
"Howard! Be careful!" Graham called out.
"Team—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a beam struck him. Five pink beams pierced through his limbs and head, and aside from the torso of the Flagship, the rest of the body disintegrated.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The break in his MS sent sparks flying as Howard screamed in agony, plummeting to the ground.
"Howard!" Graham's face grew grim as he watched his subordinate turn into a mangled wreck in the blink of an eye. Yang Hui certainly didn't hold back.
"Captain!" Daryl's MS called out frantically.
"Don't panic! I'll engage the Gundam, use this time to reorganize the remaining forces!" Graham ordered.
"Yes!" Daryl's MS turned and left, leaving only the Secret Angel and Graham's Flagship in the combat zone.
"Alright! Let me challenge you once more, with this special Flagship!"
With heightened battle intent, Graham slammed the control stick forward, his foot pressing the pedal to the floor, sending his MS toward the Secret Angel at an unbelievable speed.
Transforming midair, the special Flagship fired as it drew its plasma sword, ready for battle.
"Heh, this guy really doesn't know when to quit," Yang Hui muttered, a smirk forming as he easily blocked the linear rifle shots with the shield-type GN-bits. At the same time, he holstered two GN submachine guns at his waist and drew two GN swords.
"Gotcha!" Graham saw that the Secret Angel's view was completely blocked by the shield-type GN-bits, and the surrounding gun-type GN-bits hadn't opened fire. He had already reached the Secret Angel's front, and with a precise strike, he plunged his plasma sword into the gap between its shields, slicing through the defensive perimeter. He then raised his linear rifle, aiming at the cockpit.
But at that moment, a warning went off in Graham's head. Instinctively, he eased off the pedal, slightly reducing the Flagship's speed.
And it was this tiny shift that saved him. The Flagship's arm stayed intact, but the linear rifle he had just raised was cleaved in two by a GN sword.
Despite the deceleration, the momentum carried the Flagship toward the Secret Angel, and Graham's left hand swung the plasma sword at it, but it was parried by another GN sword.
The powerful inertia sent the Secret Angel sliding back a distance before it regained its balance.
"Tch, how many Gs was that impact? This guy really is insane," Yang Hui cursed under his breath.
"Get ready! Gundam!"
Having driven the Secret Angel back, Graham's confidence soared. He drew another plasma sword with his right hand and once again floored the pedal, unleashing all his power.
"This madman... Fine, I'll save him for now," Yang Hui muttered to himself, his eyes changing. The colors around him shifted, as though time itself slowed down. The fiery battle intent was replaced by cold, calculated logic.
He gently pulled back on the control stick, tilting the Secret Angel just enough to dodge the special Flagship's assault.
In that instant, time seemed to slow. As the two machines narrowly passed each other, Graham turned his head in disbelief to look at the Secret Angel, but what greeted him was the closing gap of two GN swords.
With the beast-like intuition of a fighter, Graham reacted instinctively, pulling back hard on the control stick.
"Shing, shing…"
The Flagship's arms flew up, its balance lost as it spun wildly in the air. Sparks and arcs of electricity danced from the points where the arms had been severed.
"He dodged it?!" Yang Hui exclaimed, surprised. Based on his calculations, the special Flagship should have been sliced down to its torso.
"Heh, forget it. That guy's not much of a threat anymore. Let's finish this quickly," Yang Hui said as he glanced toward the approaching enemy reinforcements, a grin on his lips.
"Captain!" Daryl's MS arrived, now joined by the reorganized air force. They began firing at the Secret Angel in an attempt to buy Graham some time to retreat.
"I'm fine! But my MS is done for. Be careful, Daryl, this Gundam is different. It's strong!" Graham called out.
"Captain, watch me get revenge for Howard..." Daryl began, but before he could finish, a beam struck his Flagship, sending it plummeting with a fiery tail.
"Daryl!"
Graham shouted in vain, watching as his subordinates fell, mouth agape, unable to process the carnage unfolding before him.
The continuous reinforcements surrounding the Secret Angel tried to maintain suppressive fire while closing in on it, but no matter how many units arrived, they could never compress the encirclement. In fact, it seemed to be gradually collapsing instead.
The Secret Angel moved with the grace of a reaper, sitting high in the sky, indifferent to the mortals who dared challenge it. With a wave of its hand, it sent the fools who dared to rise against it to their doom.
The encirclement finally couldn't withstand the pressure and broke apart. The Secret Angel resumed its assault, drawing its GN submachine guns and charging into the UNION air forces with swift, elegant movements, like a dance across the battlefield. Each step brought down several enemy MS, while the heavy barrage around it only served as lighting for its performance.
Before long, only a handful of escaping MS remained, their will to fight shattered as they fled in panic. The airspace was now completely under the Secret Angel's control, with nothing left but the wreckage of battle.
Yang Hui's gaze shifted toward the fleeing Flagship. Graham, realizing what was about to happen, instinctively moved to stop him, but he had forgotten that his MS was incapacitated, and it no longer had the ability to fight.
"Escape? You think you can get away?" Yang Hui said, eyes cold as he withdrew all the GN-bits, stowing the GN submachine guns, and once again gripping his GN swords, unleashing all its power toward the fleeing soldiers.
"Stop! They can't fight anymore!" Graham screamed, but his words fell on deaf ears.
In mere seconds, the Secret Angel was behind one of the fleeing Flagship units.
"Don't come closer!"
No one cared about the pleas. With a cross slash, the Flagship was split into four pieces, exploding midair.
The Secret Angel didn't hesitate, immediately moving to the next target.
Chase, kill, select new targets… The cycle continued. None of the fleeing soldiers managed to escape.
"If you're not ready for battle, don't come to the battlefield. Cowards are executed on the spot," Yang Hui's voice was emotionless as he piloted the Secret Angel toward the retreat route.
"Why, Meyerin, why do you do this?" Graham clenched his fists, his mind racing to find an answer, but he was met with nothing.
Although this was his first formal battle against Yang Hui, Graham couldn't reconcile what he had seen with what he knew about Yang Hui. If he were truly so ruthless, why had he spared others? Why focus only on killing the fleeing soldiers?
Indeed, since the Talibia campaign began, aside from the first city's Talibian forces, no one had died from having their MS destroyed—most had simply been reduced to human targets. Most of the pilots had only been injured.
Thus, the true death toll in the UNION forces was limited to those few Flagship units and their pilots who attempted to flee.
"Captain! Are you alright?" Howard Mason and Daryl Dodge arrived, concerned.
"I'm fine." Graham had to interrupt his thoughts to answer.
"But that Gundam is terrifying," Howard Mason and Daryl Dodge muttered as they stared at the hellish aftermath.
"Yeah, it's like a monster," Graham said, staring at the destruction, deep in thought.
"Captain, we've lost track of the Gundam. Higher-ups ordered us to wait for rescue and return to base," Howard Mason said.
"Alright, let's see if anyone needs help."
"Yes, sir!"
The two saluted and followed Graham toward the wreckage of the other MS.
...
Meanwhile, the Virtue, Dynames, and Katarov were heading back, a precautionary measure set by Huang in case Yang Hui faced any danger. The three Gundam pilots had been spectators throughout the battle, but their hearts were far from calm.
"Hey, hey, hey, Mr. Meyerin is just too amazing!" Neil exclaimed.
"Arriving at the first city, 2 minutes to crush all Talibian MS. The second city was even worse—less than two minutes. Then, facing the joint forces of Talibia and UNION, it only took him ten minutes. Looks like he's still holding back," Lyle said with a wry smile.
"Gundam…"
"Hmm? Setsuna?" The Dylandy brothers were confused, not sure what Setsuna was talking about.
"This is Gundam. This is the Gundam pilot."
Hearing that, the Dylandy brothers fell silent. They knew that Setsuna had started to break down again, but they couldn't help but admit on
e thing: compared to Yang Hui, they, too, as Gundam pilots, were indeed lacking.
