Chapter 2: The Party
Luke spends a bit more time looking around the forest, but as he notices a monster that looks like a canine, he finds other people like him, "The undetermined? People from my city? I should check".
Luke slows down and starts stealthily approaching the canine monster, eventually he can see four people who wear shoddy hunting gear, but the overall condition of the gear seemed intact to Luke.
Far enough away from the canine and the party, Luke sees the situation as the party suddenly gets into an argument.
A man with rough features and a sword for a weapon points his sword at a bush, "Quiet! Not now, Alice. I trusted your investigation, but it seems one is still alive".
A woman with long blue hair, indignant, rebuked the man's claim, "What?! You just told me to go and look for few minutes, now, you are blaming me?!", she says as she takes an arrow and lines it up with her bow.
The party alert, the four get into a formation. Luke seeing this, "They don't act like any chosen I've seen". Luke was right, these people were also undetermined like Luke. After the Tower arrived in this world, it also brought with it Energy, the lifeblood and fuel for affinities. The chosen use Energy to create phenomenon, but the unsynchronized cannot use Energy as they cannot store Energy like the Synchronized can.
Luke confirms his hypothesis, "They must be from the same city, seeing as they cannot use Energy, they must be undetermined", and he is right again. The undetermined lie between being able to use Energy and the incapability, they symbolize that the Tower isn't an omnipotent and that it has limits; The Tower is unable to analyse every human in the world quickly, so it leaves corners of the world undetermined until one day the Tower analyses the human beings.
With Luke's tangent, the party gets into a fight quickly and quickly the canine moves and attacks the third member, a short man who held a gun. The canine ran up to the short man and bit the ankle of the man, the short man unable to aim properly because of his shaking hand hit the trigger multiple times. The man who seems the leader shouted, "What are you doing?! Do not just shoot, aim! You idiot" The man insults his junior and approaches the canine to take matters into his hands.
The canine that is Infront of the short man, biting the ankle and ripping it apart, the man with rough features ambushes the canine and the canine's back welcomes the sword and leaves behind a large gash. Surprised, the canine jumps and disengages the ankle biting and runs around, but this leads to nothing as the woman with blue hair gets a score as she lines an arrow through the canine's skull.
The fourth member, a woman who has short black hair, gave aid to the short man who had his ankle bit. "Are you okay? Anywhere else that hurts. Do you need pain killers?", overflowing with concern the woman rapid fires her sentences.
"You're my savior! I do not know what I would do without you! Thank you, Rose.", The short man claims and exclaims his gratitude to Rose, the short-haired woman.
"You would be neck deep in debt or dead because you were careless, Esmond", The leader says as he starts skinning the canine. "Alice, go stop Rose from spoiling that child".
"Why don't you do it, 'Leader' who is always delegating. At this point I might assume you are lazy", Their conversation is only a whisper, they go back and forth.
"Just do it!"
"Alright".
Alice puts her hand on Rose's shoulder. "That's enough, you can't be a nuisance all the time. Just tough it out, even for us, the Energy reinforces our body".
"Alice..." Rose looks at Alice, before she settles on Esmond with bandages wrapped around his ankle, "Alright."
The party of four, the leader, Rose, Esmond and Alice, continue their journey or survival in this world. This snippet of daily life for an average unsynchronized extends not only here, but everywhere as monsters crowd farmland, destroy cities, and reduce the land available for humanity every day.
The World Tower association regulates this to ensure humanity survives with the relative mercy of the Tower, the mainstream factions say the World Tower Association is made by the Tower for humanity; others say the organization is made by the Tower for the Tower. These conflicting opinions have been fighting for the past month, but with the Tower's mercy, there is its maleficence as every Rebell to the world order is kill on sight.
Luke broke out of his trance. "How many of them will survive", he asks no one as he returns to the city. He looks at the forest and then at the floor, "Where was the trail?".
"I wonder what being a chosen is like, most certainly, they aren't killing to survive."
When evening became night, Luke finally arrived at the gate leading to the city. The wall was still short as it was days ago when an A-tier monster destroyed the earlier wall, now, only reaching waist height and only stopping farm animals. The guards, two chosen, assigned here to this city and enforcers of the Association's will lean on the walls of the gate.
One of the guards' remarks, "You again, bro, you come late at night, never settling around, because of people like you we have to stay here at night", The other guard quickly corrects him. "You must've forgot there are monsters, the Tower should just send you into the forest to appreciate this assignment". "Hey! He is at fault! He is going out just to die! How could I not try to stop him!" The guard threw his arms around.
Luke's expression was one of amusement, "I'm selling my cores, see you tomorrow", he leaves and enters through the gate, but before he got out of earshot, he heard one of the guards say "We'll be reassigned back into headquarters, so don't go out again, wouldn't want to come back and visit your grave Luke!".
Luke looked back at the guard and waved back. A whisper, "It's not a good one, but it's home, alright," Luke spoke under his breath.
Ten minutes away from the gate, a hospital lies as a resting place for monster hunters to regroup and rest and receive healing from the chosen who have suitable affinities, a common affinity for healers is the Shelter affinity.
Arriving at a hospital and Luke notices a familiar person. "Here again? Luke, man, you got to stop with the injuries, you are going to die and to think even anaesthesia cannot stop you from up and moving". Luke smiles and talks back, "If you help me then I'll die less likely, you know". "I know, I know", The man, Brandon, gives up warning Luke and speaks under his breathe, "I just don't know how much healing my Shelter Affinity can do before it just doesn't help you".
Brandon held his hand over Luke and commanded the Energy inside him, from the core, to form and manifest based on the affinity concept, he imagines the safety aspect of a shelter and imposes the aspect on Luke. The chest squirms and flails around as it conforms to the Shelter Affinity Energy, becoming imbued with regeneration. "This should keep you alive until tomorrow".
Using Energy requires you to have the ability to store Energy, by being able to store Energy your affinity cannot change because of outside interruptions. The Tower gives the chosen a choice of suitable affinities to attune to like the Shelter Affinity. Luke, currently, does not have an affinity to use Energy with.
Affinity is the tool of the chosen to use the power of Energy.
"Thanks a lot, Brandon".
"Come here again and you'll be charged extra".
"Alright, Alright". Luke left Brandon, went to the reception, and gave the cores he got when he hunted monsters in the forest and left the hospital.
Luke looked at the ruined buildings and broken buildings and the ripped concrete streets. "I wonder what I'll do next, maybe I should hang out with Brandon?", Luke takes the right turn to see more of the same and slowly walks home.
